GA DB Rashad Roundtree (Georgia Verbal)

Better than a VTech L. IMHO.

Depends how you look at it.

  • UF pulled a Georgia Southern on UGA. Handily winning despite only throwing 3 completions.
  • More lopsided win. Should have been 38-14 if Georgia didn't score a last second touchdown in garbage time.
  • Georgia was supposed to stomp since UGA shut out Mizzou & Mizzou shut out UF.

I would agree that the VTech loss was pretty bad, but the Georgia UF game is a lot more recent and is still fresh in peoples' heads.

Ah, the ole transitive property of shutouts. Works every time.

Would love to see this kid in S&G. He really came out of nowhere and some of his hits...wow.

Results of one game, particularly when the kid wasn't even there for that game, have little-to-no impact on a recruit and gravitates towards "no." Routinely you see recruits commit to schools that have just just lost (even when they visited during the loss). However, an entire dumpster fire of a season most definitely can impact a recruit's decision, especially if a coaching job is on the line. With UGA, they've had a pretty good season overall and Richt is staying put...this will come down to comfort level and we have built that for some time. I don't know if distance will be a factor...any sense on your guys confidence @BigWoof31 ? Seems like it could go either way, although I am certainly optimistic.

I'll always remember getting the committment of Philly Brown after we lost to USC in the Shoe. A game is a game is a game. Roundtree being comfortable with the staff, current players and commits means more than a game. And this goes for almost all recruits. I hope ground was made up to beat out UGA as Richt isn't going to just give up on an in state talent like Roundtree.

I just made a light hearted comment about UF beating UGA affecting the kids perspective on UGA and it spun off from there into the realm of transitive scenarios. One game is likely no indicator of a kids decision to choose a school, unless said kid was at said game and did not have a good time.

Hopefully Roundtree picks the Bucks on Friday. Not holding my breath though, mainly because I like to breath.

I don't have much of a sense of which way the wind is blowing for this young man but some things to consider:

1). Our defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruit has made Mr. Roundtree his bellcow in 2014. He wants desperately to improve the talent at safety and believes Rashad is exactly the type of player to do it.

2). We graduate our lone returning safety this year and Rashad would compete for a starting position immediately.

3). This young man goes to high school about 35 minutes from where I grew up. It's not an part of Atlanta where we've had any measure of continued recruiting dominance. The region goes in ebbs and flows.

4). What is interesting is that the "gaze of the Crimson Tide" has turned elsewhere. Apparently Alabama has decided to direct their time and resources to other recruits. I think that's a positive sign for Georgia.

As @BigWoof31 said I don't really know where this one is headed...OSU insiders are making a strong case for OSU, UGA insiders think they have him as well. As such I will offer the OSU counterpoint to those four points, knowing full well that both teams have built a solid case:

1) His relationship with the UGA staff is undeniable...but Chris Ash has also made Roundtree a huge priority and Roundtree says he talks to Coach Ash 2-3 times a week. Not something you hear from a recruit who is not seriously interested.

2) While OSU's depth chart may not be as favorable with three sophomores (Powell, Bell and Burrows) and a freshman (Smith) in the two deep, OSU believes he could be an upgrade and if not, he only has to wait a couple of years for a starting spot.

3) Going back to the summer, Roundtree has visited UGA twice and OSU twice. He lives less than two hours from Athens. He's around ten hours from Columbus. To me that is VERY interesting. And you can believe that while he was here they made sure to keep Kwon and Bell around him on his official visit.

4) Honestly not sure that Roundtree ever really expressed any interested in any schools other than UGA and OSU...the lack of visits elsewhere would suggest he has not. The kid has been perceived as a UGA lock for such a long time that many other schools may have simply bowed out.

I am leaning towards calling him to UGA. Nothing more than a gut feeling. The fact is anyone that says they know where he is headed is kidding themselves and anyone that is guessing where he is going is doing just that...guessing. Rashad hasn't even told his family where he is headed. My biggest concern is that regardless of his decision there is talk he could still make an official visit to UGA later in the year. Obviously if he picks OSU tomorrow that is a huge concern.

Some more from Wiltfong (not sure if it is free or not):

Interesting Q&A with Roundtree's father from AJC.

He’s really sentimental about Duke because they were the first big-time program to offer him a scholarship, and that means a lot to him. They saw something in him before anybody else did. I know that means a lot.

“Of course, with UGA, it’s the in-state school and has a good tradition. I visited with him there a couple of times, and he liked the atmosphere.

“With Ohio State, he said that there’s a different atmosphere in that portion of the country. And that’s why I wanted him to go out and see other programs – and see how people react and see how people do things. He was really impressed with Ohio State because he said it was just a different ‘feel’ there about the way they approach football.

If your son doesn’t pick UGA on Friday, are you worried about upsetting the voters in your district? “No, absolutely not. People know that he’s my son, and they know that I’m going to root for him to make the best decision, no matter which college it is. Everything else is secondary. Wherever he wants to go and feels the most comfortable, I support him 100 percent. I think some people will be disappointed on Friday but that’s just because they’re looking at it from the perspective of wanting success for their favorite team – and not the success of the individual.
