G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Why can?t Evan Turner be number one in the 2010 NBA Draft?
by John Nguyen
Apr 17th, 2010

Evan Turner is going to the 2010 NBA Draft once he signed with super agent David Falk. The Kentucky Wildcats starting four, featuring John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins, has declared as well. With all the hype surrounding John Wall, it might be difficult to see Evan Turner as the number one guy. He?s not flashy like Wall. He?s not as big as Cousins. He?s not explosive like Vince Carter. Turner does not look like he can score at will like Kobe. He doesn?t scream after dunks like Joakim Noah. Since he?s not any of that then what is he?

Evan Turner is a quiet villain.

Evan Turner – 6'7 Shooting Guard
This is a draft class that has more than one player with star power thanks to Evan Turner. He's quite possibly the best consolation price teams that who miss out on John Wall could ask for. With three years of college experience under his belt Turner is as NBA ready as they come. The game's speed and high level of athleticism won't take Turner long to get adjusted to at all.

Turner is the kind of player that teams can build around because he's going to impact the game heavily every night. He may have some games where his shot isn't falling, but Turner is going to be contributing in some other way whether it is by rebounding, creating for teammates, or making plays. Lottery team that needs him the most: Sacramento Kings.

Ohio State star basketball player and probable NBA No. 1 draft pick Evan Turner returned to his high school alma mater of St. Joseph's to accept an award for his leadership in athletics.

St. Joseph's basketball coach Gene Pingatore has a laugh with former St. Joseph's basketball player Evan Turner, who returned from Ohio State University to receive a leadership in sports award Thursday, April 29 at his alma mater.

La Grange, IL ?

Before possibly getting drafted as the No. 1 pick in the NBA Draft June 24, Evan Turner had a very important stop to make Thursday in Westchester.

The former St. Joseph basketball star returned home to his alma mater to receive the school?s Inspirational Leadership Award.

?I love this place,? he said. ?I don?t even know what to say. It?s great to be back at St. Joe?s. I can?t even believe it.?

Three years ago, Turner placed his name on a list with the best high school basketball players in Illinois.

Two months ago, the Ohio State University junior guard hit a miraculous half-court buzzer-beater to beat Michigan during the Big Ten Tournament.

Less than four weeks ago, the Turner was named the 2010 Naismith National Player of the Year and declared himself available for the NBA Draft in June.

All of that led him back home Thursday morning.

In front of an assembly of students and faculty, Turner reflected on his basketball career in both high school and college. He said that of all the accomplishments and accolades in his career, Thursday stands out as arguably the best.

?Today is at the top,? Turner said. ?This is where it all started. I remember when Tony Freeman (St. Joseph boys basketball alum) was being honored. It?s crazy to already be back to receive this award after just a few short years.?
As he continues to prepare for this summer?s NBA Draft, Turner plans to remain in Columbus, Ohio to develop his game and workout. He will also continue to look for an agent and said he received advice from Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers.

?I?ve been trying to stay under the radar,? Turner said. ?My whole experience has been a dream. I always thought going pro would be the best. I just want to go to a team where I?ll be able to fit in.?

David Falk Signs Ohio State's Evan Turner For Representation

By Liz Mullen, Staff Writer, SportsBusiness Journal
Turner Has Signed With David Falk And
His Company, FAME, For Representation

DAVID FALK, once unquestionably the most powerful agent in basketball if not in all of sports, yesterday signed one of the most high-profile athletes in the country, Ohio State G EVAN TURNER. Falk and his company, FAME, will represent Turner for playing contract and marketing work. Turner, who was the consensus '10 Player of the Year as a junior at OSU, selected Falk and his company after what Falk said was an "extensive" agent selection process in which at least three other agents were interviewed. Turner is ranked No. 2 by websites nbadraft.net and draftexpress.com behind Kentucky G JOHN WALL. Powerful NBA player agent DAN FEGAN of BEST signed Wall. "It's a two-man draft," Falk said of the June NBA Draft, noting that either Wall or Turner could be selected first overall. Falk said Turner selected him over other agents because he is the only one who advised Turner last year to remain in school another year. Falk: "He called me last spring to advise him on whether he should leave college as a sophomore. I advised him to return to school. I told him if he returned to school he would go in the top eight players this year. ... He was very appreciative that one person told him to go back to school. Everyone else told him to come out." Turner is the first National Player of the Year that Falk has represented since '99, when he represented Duke F ELTON BRAND.

Rivals.com College Basketball - Which early entrant will be second to Wall as rookie?

At the College Basketball Roundtable each week, we ask members of the coverage staff for their opinions about a current topic in the sport. We have two questions this week - one Saturday and one today.

TODAY'S QUESTION: Take John Wall out of the equation. Which early entrant do you think will have the biggest impact in the NBA as a rookie?
Even if the question included John Wall, I'd consider Ohio State's Evan Turner. Point guards - and specifically John Calipari's point guards - have made huge impacts in recent seasons, but Turner could end up being the more valuable rookie. Turner's biggest value is his ability to play so many positions. Of course, a team picking him high in the draft is weak in several areas. The team that takes Turner likely will need him to fill a handful of roles, and Turner should be up to the challenge.

- DAVID FOX

Contd.....
Ohio State's Evan Turner seems like the obvious choice here. Wall and Turner clearly were the two best players in college basketball this season, and they also seem like the top two pro prospects. While Wall might have a little more upside at the next level because he's more of a pure point guard, Turner also should be able to come in and make an immediate impact. The guy's versatility should make him a natural fit for just about any franchise, and his experience should allow him to make a relatively seamless transition. I think Wall and Turner clearly are the top two guys. Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins and Georgia Tech's Derrick Favors also eventually should develop into solid NBA players, but I think it might take those two freshmen a little more time to make an impact.

There seems to be little doubt that the team will select Ohio State guard Evan Turner, the consensus college player of the year. That is if the Washington Wizards, who miraculously landed the top slot, take Kentucky product John Wall, which seems to be a foregone conclusion.

The 6-7 Turner could turn out to be just the fit for a Sixers team that struggled at the two-guard all season. The Chicago native averaged 20.4 points, 9.2 rebounds and six assists this past season for the Buckeyes. He was moved to point guard, a position he hadn't played before, by coach Thad Matta before the season out of necessity. He missed 4 1/2 weeks after breaking bones in his back during a nasty fall on an attempted dunk.

"He's very tall and athletic and he'll work on his jump shot," said Holiday of Turner, who declared for the NBA after his junior season. "He's a wing player, somebody who gets out there and locks up on defense and can handle the ball. I think it's a perfect fit. I think now we can move Andre [Iguodala] to the three [small forward] and we have a lot more ability to score, a lot more scoring."

Q: What are your thoughts on Evan Turner?

A: ?Evan Turner is a terrific basketball player; he has great size. People compare him to Brandon Roy. This is a compliment, but he plays like a 30 year old man out there. He gets a step ahead of everybody. He doesn?t look like he?s explosive, but for some unknown reason like a Brandon Roy, he gets by you and gets to where he wants to go on the court. He has a great handle and at his height, that?s an important trait to have.

Q: On Evan Turner playing three years for Ohio State.

A: ?I don?t see it as a negative. He was college player of the year. He is a competitor and he?s done a good job for them. He will definitely be in our mix; I have no doubt about that.?

Minny may move up

Look for the Minnesota Timberwolves to make a strong play to trade up to No. 2. The Wolves are very, very high on Evan Turner. They feel his versatility, scoring ability and court presence is the perfect fit for their young club.

The Sixers, on the other hand, aren't a perfect fit for Turner. Both Andre Iguodala and rookie Jrue Holiday are versatile guards who can defend multiple positions and handle the ball. And like Turner, neither is a lights-out shooter.

With Minnesota pining hard for Turner, don't be surprised to see the Wolves offer up the No. 4 and either the No. 16 or the No. 23 pick to Philly to move up two spots. That would allow the Wolves to get the guy they've coveted all along in the draft and give Philly an extra pick and a shot at another guy they're high on -- Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins or Syracuse's Wesley Johnson.
