G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Darn Turner so close the illusive quadruple double 24 pts 9 reb 9asts and 9 To. Talk about filling the statsheet.

CBS talking heads had ET struggling in the tournament so far and at the beginning of the game and sounding very negative, "this coming from the potential POY?" I think they need to eat a little crow. ET is a special player and has more upside than anyone out there. It's like they want the Buckeyes to fall flat. Not going to happen this year CBS, miles to go before they sleep...

Dynamic Turner drives resilient OSU to Sweet 16
MIDWEST REGIONAL | OHIO STATE 75, GEORGIA TECH 66: Buckeyes on an Evan keel
Comments

March 22, 2010
BY JIM O'DONNELL Staff Reporter
MILWAUKEE -- Evan Turner is a shadow, a rumor, a basketball gremlin.

His presence causes other teams to twitch. His presence at Ohio State can still cause several college coaches in Illinois to wince.

On Sunday, the Chicago native split his afternoon between hammering and haunting Georgia Tech. When the Turner mystery theater was over, the Buckeyes -- the No. 2 seed in the NCAA's depleted Midwest Regional -- were en route to the Sweet 16 with a 75-66 victory over the 10th-seeded Yellow Jackets.

While 18,031 at the Bradley Center waited for some of his trademark zip-zam-boom, Turner instead gave them a full 40 minutes of subtleties and determination.

The lithe, 6-7 junior finished with 24 points, nine rebounds, nine assists and a rocky-roaded nine turnovers. But it wasn't the numbers that made the difference -- it was the relentless threat that his presence posed and the disruption it caused that spawned the win.

''I was just trying to take what the defense gave me,'' said Turner, an alumnus of St. Joseph High School in Westchester. ''I was just trying to go at the right time, make some plays and get everybody involved.''

NCAA tourney can't afford to lose Turner
FoxSports
MILWAUKEE

The NCAA tournament needs Evan Turner and Ohio State to keep winning.

The Big Dance needs Evan Turner and Ohio State.

With Kansas out of the equation after the loss to Northern Iowa, there's no potential blue-blood matchup between the Jayhawks and Kentucky looming on the horizon in the national championship game.

That was the one everyone wanted to see.

Two of the most storied programs in history and a pair of coaches in Kansas' Bill Self and Kentucky's John Calipari who have garnered plenty of recent history.

It had all the storylines, including the veteran in Sherron Collins going up against the young pup, John Wall.

Not to mention, it would have gone through the roof in terms of television ratings.

But that's a just a fantasy now.

There just weren't a ton of electrifying players in the country this season. There were some talented guys, but not a lot of them that can carry a team to six wins in the NCAA tournament.

The Player of the Year race will ultimately be decided between two guys:

1. Wall, the Kentucky freshman point guard who has made a living out of taking and making big shots.

2. Turner, the multi-dimensional, recently converted point guard who missed a month after a nasty fall in which he broke a couple of bones in his back.

That's why the Big Dance needs Turner to continue to advance.

"I'm not sure if it's good for the tournament," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "But I know it's good for me."

"Absolutely," Buckeyes guard Jon Diebler said. "I think Evan is great for the tournament. People want to watch him."

Turner is exciting. He does it all. He can score, pass, rebound and has the ball in his hands nearly the entire game.

He's a potential triple-double every time he takes the court.

"He's a great player," Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt said after watching Turner go for 24 points, nine rebounds and nine assists Sunday. "There's no question he can take that team a long way."

Turner Named Player of the Year by USBWA

Release: 03/22/2010

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) - The U.S. Basketball Writers Association has selected Ohio State guard/forward Evan Turner as the winner of the 2009-10 Oscar Robertson Trophy, annually presented to the National Player of the Year.

The 6-7, 210-pound junior from Chicago, was the consensus choice by voters in all nine geographical districts of the USBWA. Turner becomes the first national player of the year from Ohio State since Jerry Lucas won his second straight USBWA Player of the Year award in 1962. Turner is also the first Big Ten player to win the honor since Purdue's Glenn Robinson in 1994.

Turner will be presented with the Oscar Robertson Trophy by its namesake Oscar Robertson at the USBWA's annual College Basketball Awards Breakfast on Friday, April 2 at 8 a.m. at The Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis in conjunction with the NCAA Men's Final Four. For tickets to the awards breakfast, visit the USBWA website, usbwa.com.

Turner, a first-team USBWA All-American and USBWA District V Player of the Year, was chosen as the national player of the year from a field of 16 finalists. The Big Ten Player of the Year has the led Buckeyes (29-7) to the Big Ten regular-season and tournament championships and into the Midwest Regional in St. Louis, where they face Tennessee Friday.

"I think he's very deserving," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "I am very proud of what he's done, the work he's done to put himself in position to win the award is something that's truly amazing. He's one of the most multi-dimensional players in the country. He has an ability to score the basketball, drive it, get to the foul line, and shoot threes. His passing makes everyone on the floor that much better."

I have a dumb question... When it says "standard messaging rates apply", that means the only cost is from your phone plan with your wireless service, right? So if I already have unlimited texting then there is zero cost when it says that...?

Correct. "Standard messaging rates apply" means its treated like any other text under your current plan, which differentiates it from the pay-per-use text services that send you a wallpaper or ringtone, or answer a question for 99 cents.

Teams have good reason to take Turner No. 1

Through much of the college season, it seemed that John Wall was the only guy worthy of being taken with the top pick. Some people even called this draft a "draft of one." The early calls could ultimately be accurate. But drafts rarely go as expected.

While this may indeed turn out to be a draft of one, Evan Turner could end up going No. 1 overall.

Though he is, at best, the second-best prospect in this draft, Turner may a better fit overall for a number of teams that could end up drafting in the top spot. And he's a good enough player that he won't be a bad choice. I'm not ignoring the chances that one of these teams would make a trade to open up room for Wall, but they won't just dump guys to do it. That said, consider the following possibilities:

NBA Draft Blog - Ohio State Buckeyes' Evan Turner a real alternative to Kentucky Wildcats' John Wall - ESPN

Chris (Firenze)
Minnesota lands the top pick, they have to take Evan Turner right? That's what seems logical to me.

Chad Ford
Evan Turner's getting a lot of (deserved) love right now. He's the best player in college basketball -- hands down in my opinion. But John Wall is a better pro prospect. I've yet to come across a GM who thinks differently. So, it's not that easy. Yes, Minnesota, Utah, New Orleans and Chicago (to name a few) don't really need a point guard. You could also throw Sacramento, Golden State and New Jersey into that mix as well. But teams rarely draft for need with the No. 1 pick. You take the best player and then figure it out. Worst case scenario you swap the #1 for the

Gnemi (Montana)
Chad, how worried should GMs be about Evan Turner's ball-handling? Nearly 4 and a half turnovers a game, many more in the tournament so far...then again, John Wall tends to mishandle the ball, too.

Chad Ford
Turner is playing point guard and is asked to do everything at Ohio State. He won't do either in the pros. No one is that worried. Ditto for Wall.

Preston (Boise, ID)
To put it in perspective Evan Turner compared to John Wall is analogous to comparing Brandon Roy to Derrick RoseDerrick Rose is just so enticing

Chad Ford
That's a pretty good comparison.
