G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

For some basketball purists, the records of double doubles by Jerry Lucas is eye opening! In his 3 year career Lucas recorded double doubles in 78 games. That means of his 84 games in 60-62, he fell short of a double double just 6 times!
Lucas was a great player, but it has to be said he choked somewhat against Paul Hogue and the Cincinnati Bearcats in NC games.

On the official records and history site of OSU basketball, your recollection is proven accurate based on the assist records in tOSU history books.

As noted on page 132 of the OSU basketball record book, the yearly assist leaders were first recognized officially in 1974 as compared to the NCAA in 1984.
Re. Havlicek as the leader in career triple doubles, it is interesting that the records for double-doubles (page 141) indicates Hondo only had 27 double doubles in his 3 year career including 13 in his senior season (61-62).
Agree with the assumption that Havlicek holds the unofficial record for triple doubles, but probably at an arbitrary rate much less than 8-10 per year.

Back to Turner, his accomplishments this year will seemingly require a new catgory for the OSU record book, since the triple double is not yet an official listing in the archives.
You're right, Lucas's name completely slipped my mind. According to basketball-reference.com, Havlicek's 3-year per game average for points and rebounds was 14.6 and 8.6, while Lucas's was 24.3 and 17.2. It's likely Lucas could have recorded a few triple-doubles over his career with either assists or blocks, neither of which were recorded back then.

In any event, when you have to go back so far to even just speculate who might hold a record that was never recorded, that speaks a lot about the rarified air Evan Turner is entering.

Did I mention it's only the fourth week of November?

OSU men's basketball: Turner wise to defense
St. Francis might mimic Heels' ploy against him
Saturday, November 28, 2009
By Bob Baptist
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The Carolina blueprint for defending Evan Turner and the Ohio State men's basketball team was unfurled last week and has been copied twice.

When Turner gets the ball, one opponent will be paying attention to him. When he crosses the three-point arc, a second will shade toward him. And when and if he reaches the free-throw lane, there will be at least three obstacles between him and the basket.

"We were just trying to keep him from driving and make him pitch it," Lipscomb coach Scott Sanderson said Tuesday after his team lost at Ohio State.

It is likely that St. Francis has something similar in store for Turner today when it plays the Buckeyes in Value City Arena.

If Turner has his druthers, he'll handle the ploy more expediently than he did Lipscomb's. He had five turnovers in the first half against the Bisons, none in the second.

"I don't think I recognized how they were playing me at first," Turner said. "I probably should have shot some when I passed and passed some when I shot."

Turner has 988 points and 467 rebounds in his career so he is on pace to become the 21st player at tOSU to get 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
That's quite an accomplishment for Evan when he gets there. I see him getting the points against St. Francis tonight.

Evan Turner collects his third-consecutive weekly honor after etching his name in Ohio State lore while leading the No. 18 Ohio State men?s basketball team to a pair of wins last week. On Tuesday, the junior guard recorded Ohio State's third all-time triple double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists to propel the Scarlet and Gray past Lipscomb, 84-64. The Chicago native now owns two triple-doubles on the year, making him one of just 34 NCAA student-athletes all-time to record multiple triple-doubles in a single season.

With the effort against the Bisons, he also becomes the first Buckeye to open the season with five-consecutive double-double performances since Clark Kellogg accomplished the feat in 1980. Turner continued his scoring prowess in Saturday's contest against St. Francis, adding 16 in OSU's 110-47 rout over the Red Flash, becoming the 44th Buckeye in program history to eclipse the 1,000-point plateau. On the week, Turner averaged nine rebounds, eight assists and 16 points on 71.4 percent shooting.

Hamilton on the importance of Evan Turner:

"Whenever you have a guy like Turner on the court, he finds a way to make up for what other people (namely William Buford) are not doing.

"He?s kind of a throwback. He kind of reminds me a lot of of Oscar Robertson, those guys who were big point guards who take you inside and shoot over the top of you and they never seem to be in a hurry. They seem to execute at their pace and find a way. You keep saying you think you?re defending them, but they?re doing so many things that make the difference in the game that don?t even show up in the statistical column: making the extra pass, getting the rebound, keeping the ball alive, penetrating and finding people.

"He?s just a tremendous player. He?s as good as I?ve played against in a number of years. Not only is he talented, he has a court sense and awareness that kind of separates him from just the good players. He?s a guy that makes a difference because not only can he create for himself, he can create for his teammates as well.

"He?s kind of like a coach out there on the floor. You?ve just got to give him the ball and sometimes allow him to create for his teammates. He?s an experienced and smart-headed guy. As long as he?s on the floor, they?re always going to have a chance to win."

Spotlight Performer: Evan Turner (Ohio State)
Few players have improved their stock at this early junction of the season more than Ohio State's Evan Turner. Turner has been on an absolute tear in the Buckeyes 6-1 start, leading the team with 20 points, 12 rebounds, and six assists a night. At 6'7 Turner continues to be the nation's most complete player. Defenses are really going to focus in on him and try to wear him down in Big Ten play, but right now Turner is showing no signs of slowing down and there isn't a more well-balances player that the country has to offer.

Turner to hospital for X-ray on his back

Evan Turner is en route to Ohio State University Medical Center for an X-ray on his lower back, according to a team spokesman, after the junior point guard fell hard on it during the first half of the Buckeyes' game against Eastern Michigan today in Value City Arena.

Turner was "sore" but walked out of the arena on his own, spokesman Dan Wallenberg said.

Turner walked with assistance to the locker room after being helped from the floor.

His hands slipped off the rim after he attempted a dunk on a drive down the lane and swung himself on the rim after he was fouled on the play. Television replays showed him trying to brace his fall with his hands but landing hard on his back.

After several minutes prone on the court under the basket, he walked gingerly to the Ohio State locker room as athletic trainer Vince O'Brien supported him with an arm around his waist.
