No more excuses for Sixers' Turner

With roster turnover and a nice run early this past season (Games Nos. 9-28), Evan Turner may be set for a much-improved season. That was a good 20-game stretch for Turner last season. He shot the ball extremely well, especially from three. He had worked hard last summer on making the corner three and it showed during those 20 games. He scored double figures in 19 of the 20 games and averaged 17.2 points. He averaged 6.4 rebounds in that stretch, as well. ... It is a big year for Turner not just because it is a contract year, but what were perceived as road blocks to his success in the early part of his NBA career are all gone. First it was Andre Iguodala. The second season it was Doug Collins for not starting him, and last year it was Jrue Holiday having the ball in his hands 90 percent of the time.

PHILADELPHIA — If you’re talking about Evan Turner on Twitter, Brett Brown isn’t paying attention. If you’re dogging the No. 2 overall pick from the 2010 draft, Brown’s turning a deaf ear to it. And he hopes Turner is, too.

The 76ers’ first-year coach admits that while he’s only had six weeks to get to know Turner, he said he understands the fourth-year man out of Ohio State.

“(Turner) is a talent, and I think the weight of the city at times and the expectations — like they would (place) on anybody — can drown you if you let it,” Brown said Wednesday in a roundtable with reporters. “I think it’s important that we don’t pay attention to what (reporters) write. Seriously. I hope he doesn’t care about what’s going on on Twitter. We’re going to come into a gym and find some way to find a passion for the game again, to enjoy playing the game again.”

Turner stands to become a free agent at the end of this season. Now the Sixers, who open camp Saturday, have to determine whether to give the 6-7 combo guard an $8.7 million qualifying offer for the 2014-15 campaign, which would allow them to match offers made by other teams this offseason.

If you were to make up a stat line to define Evan Turner, you would probably come up with 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.

It is the perfect Turner line- production good enough to give hope, but not quite what you would have hoped for. Production just above what the average NBA player would give you, but also just below what a star player would give you.

It is also exactly- well, if you round it up- what Turner averaged last season, something he was very defensive about during Media Day on Friday.

"I definitely want to keep getting better and keep shooting better, but I'm not going to dwell on 14, 7 and 5," Turner said before clearly getting irritated. "I mean, I don't know what else you want me to say. Throw somebody else in that situation, do that. I had a little bit of better shooting nights, maybe we would have won more games, and I take responsibility for that. But I'm not going to be chastised over 14, 7 & 5. Somebody hasn't done that in a while. I'm going to keep getting better, keep developing and keep jumping. But I'm not going to get beat down over what occurred last year."

PHILADELPHIA — Evan Turner was preparing to be traded this offseason after the Philadelphia 76ers dealt his good friend, All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday, to the New Orleans Pelicans for injured teenage center Nerlens Noel and a first-round draft pick in 2014.

"I was getting ready for it," Turner said on the eve of training camp.

And he knows his tenure in Philadelphia likely remains short-lived.

Turner is the antithesis of a Sam Hinkie player. The analytic-minded new Sixers president and general manager aims to identify and mine undervalued, efficient talent, and Turner has proven a treasure chest that contains an I-owe-you, a promise of riches to this point unfulfilled.

The swingman has failed to live up to fans' lofty expectations since the Sixers selected the 2009-10 NCAA player of the year out of Ohio State with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. And he's entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract, making him a possible trade candidate, should the Sixers receive a half-decent offer.

"What I do know is he has a lot of areas that he really can blossom," first-year Sixers coach Brett Brown said. "He is a talent, and I think that the weight of the city at times and the expectations, like they would anybody, can drown you if you let it. I think it's important that we don't pay attention to what you write, seriously, and I hope he's not caring about what goes on on Twitter."

Evan Turner will likely lead the Sixers in scoring this season.

Okay, that’s not really a revelation as there are a grand total of about three players on the team that could compete for that distinction. If he was given enough open three-point opportunities and allowed to take as many off-balanced turnarounds as he wanted maybe Spencer Hawes could lay claim to the Sixers’ scoring title. Thaddeus Young is the other viable option in this area, but throughout the first two preseason games Turner has outshot Young 31 to 18, and with Young not being known for his assertive nature on the offensive end, this trend will likely continue throughout the season. Or until Turner gets traded.

This season, Turner should finally have the opportunity to operate with the ball in his hands at least occasionally, which many pundits say is his best approach to pro play. Turner’s points per game have gone up in each of his three professional seasons, and he posted a career-high 13.3 points per last season. With the ball in his hands and no Iguodala or Holiday to defer to, expect to see a lot of those patented Turner jump shots flat-lining towards the rim.

Logically, as his points per have gone up, so has his attempt average and usage rate, more stats that should be bumped up in the absence of other solid scoring options. Turner posted a usage rate of 20.3 last year while playing alongside all-star Jrue Holiday, who posted his own usage rate of 26.2. With Holiday out of the equation, Turner’s usage should increase, and if he shoots at a similar or slightly improved percentage, then his scoring should spike, at least slightly.

Through two preseason games, Turner is averaging 22 points per. While this number likely won’t be sustained throughout the season, there is reason to believe that he could average between 15 to 20 on a nightly basis, especially if he continues to get to the line consistently (he took 22 free throws in the first two preseason games). He bulked up his upper body in the offseason for this purpose, among others.

PHILADELPHIA – Evan Turner was defiant after scoring a game-high 23 points in the Philadelphia 76ers' 127-97 preseason loss to the undermanned Brooklyn Nets in front of an alleged crowd of 6,315 fans Monday night at the desolate Wells Fargo Center, a game first-year Sixers coach Brett Brown called a "reality check" for a team most NBA analysts expect to be the worst in the league.

Brooklyn was playing without Paul Pierce, Jason Terry, Deron Williams and Andrei Kirilenko, and Kevin Garnett played less than 15 minutes.

"I don't think we're going down," Turner said when asked how he'll cope with all the losing this season, as the Sixers take a run at the top overall pick in next summer's draft. "I never woke up and thought I was going to be unsuccessful in my life.

Pretty much, my teammates and I are going to go out and play every single game and play hard and take it from there.

"There's different type of successes, in general, personal and team-wise. We've got to keep getting better," he said. "But I'm not going to sit here and be a loser. … I'm not a loser. Period. Point blank. So I'm not going to sit there and dwell on it. Period."

Turner (6-7, 205) has failed to live up to fans' lofty expectations since the Sixers selected the 2009-10 NCAA player of the year out of Ohio State with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. The 24-year-old is entering the fourth and final season of his rookie contract that pays him approximately $6.7 million this season, making him a possible trade candidate.

He said his agent has not discussed a contract extension with the Sixers.

Last year, when Jrue Holiday got a contract extension right before the deadline on opening night, it was a load off the point guard’s mind. With no contract talks to worry about, Holiday went out and put together a first half of the season worthy of an All-Star berth.

This year, it’s Evan Turner’s turn to wait on a contract extension. Heading into the last season of his rookie contract, the Sixers have until midnight on Oct. 30 to sign Turner to an extension.

If they do not sign him, Turner can become a restricted free agent at the end of the season.

So with the deadline quickly approaching, Turner says there really isn’t too much negotiating going on between the Sixers and his agent David Falk. At least there are not any talks as far as he knows.

“There’s nothing really to talk about,” Turner said after Monday’s exhibition loss to the Brooklyn Nets at the Wells Fargo Center.

  Homecoming for most Buckeyes was yesterday. For Evan Turner, it’s Monday night, and one he said he is “most definitely” looking forward to.
  
  When the Philadelphia 76ers play the Cleveland Cavaliers in an NBA exhibition game at Value City Arena, Turner will return to the court on which he became college basketball’s player of the year in 2010.
  
  “I’m going to be glad to be back in familiar territory where I had some pretty good times,” he said. “I can’t wait to see some of my old coaches and old faces, and the fans.”
  
  It will be a temporary respite from his life as a former No. 2 draft choice who, entering his fourth pro season, has not met expectations for someone selected so high and is rumored to be in his final days in Philadelphia.
  
  “Being in the eastern part of the States is way different than being in the Midwest,” Turner said. “Fans at Ohio State never booed or were negative. In Philly, that’s kind of what they’re known for. It’s the City of Brotherly Love. I guess that’s how they show their affection or whatever.”

It's more than just another preseason game for Evan Turner. Monday's exhibition against the Cleveland Cavaliers in Columbus, Ohio, will be a homecoming for the 76ers swingman.

Turner returns to Ohio State, where he became college basketball's player of the year in 2010.

"I've always had great memories there. Positive people. Positive things," Turner said after Sunday's practice at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. "So it will be cool."

He made it an enjoyable experience for his teammates. Turner, who owns a house in Columbus, hosted a team dinner on Sunday. Teammates gathered at his house after their chartered flight arrived in Columbus.

"My mom is cooking dinner right now," Turner said after practice. "I will allow them to come over and be freeloaders."
Asked what was on the menu, he responded "unhealthy stuff."

"It's all about me tonight," Turner joked when reminded that coach Brett Brown wants the team to eat healthy foods.

One Week Until Sixers: Evan Turner, NBA All-Star, Ricky Davis

In a world in which the Sixers are the worst team in the league, bereft of top-line talent or medium-line depth, someone still has to take lots of shots and, by default, make a few. It won't be Thaddeus Young, though he's undeniably the team's best player and most attractive human asset. Not Michael Carter-Williams either -- at least not at first.

It's gonna be Evan Turner. And he'll have enough opportunities to run the offense that I am making a BOLD PREDICTION that he'll be an All-Star this season. You may now commence the witch-burning session.

During my annual Renewing Hope with Evan Turner, I began to rally myself behind the idea that Doug Collins poisoned Evan with the Tears of Lys (or just coached him into bad habits). With a new organizational philosophy and a head coach without Doug's ego or horrible-fitting dress shirts, Evan figures to not only have more opportunities -- he'll have tools to cash in on them more efficiently.


Evan Turner's Final Year of his Rookie Contract
The Sixers will have a choice to make on Evan if he stays the season. Ultimately it boils down to whether Evan can finish with a better percentage at the rim and if he can keep getting to the foul line. So far so good in preseason -- he's averaging over 7FTs per game in less minutes than he'll play during the year.
I'm confident he'll get the stats. Especially early on, they'll rely on him heavily while MCW finds footing and Zumoff scans the floor again and again for Jrue Holiday to no avail.

Pre-ASB stats: 21.8 points per game on 44% shooting (TS - 53%), 7.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists.

Turner's future with Sixers uncertain

There's a great deal of uncertainty about whether the Sixers will offer Evan Turner a contract extension by Thursday's deadline.

But the 6-foot-7 swingman, who is heading into the final year of his contract, is not concerned.

"I'm going to get money regardless," he said after Friday's practice at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic medicine. "I'm not really going to worry about that.

"I just want to take it day by day and keep becoming a better player."

Turner expected to be traded this summer. And the Sixers still could try to trade him during the season.

But so far, he along with forward Thaddeus Young and center Spencer Hawes have been the team leaders. That's a role Turner cherishes even though there's uncertainty surrounding his future in Philadelphia.

"I just take it one day at a time," he said. "Like I said, I'll be somewhere next year. All that other stuff doesn't really bother me.

"When you have teammates, you try to work with them and help them out. And that's it."

Turner averaged a team-leading 17.3 points to go with 7.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.67 turnovers this preseason. Turner averaged a career-best 13.3 points last season and was the only Sixer to start all 82 games.

Assuming he's not re-signed by the Sixers, one would think his market value will depend on the numbers Turner produces this season. He disagrees.

"I don't think numbers predict it in general," Turner said. "You see the contracts that were passed out and it's like, what are numbers? Are they good numbers? Or are they bad numbers? People are passing out like crazy contracts. And it's like, what are you doing?"
