PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia 76ers finished last season averaging 93.2 points per game. That was the lowest scoring average in the NBA, the first time the franchise had that dubious distinction.
This year the Sixers have cracked the 100 point total 10 different times to average 103 a game – good enough for 10th in the league.
“We play at a good pace,” said Sixers center Spencer Hawes. “We get out in transition and we’re attacking the rim a lot more which I think leads to easy opportunities.”
A lot of that can be contributed to the new offensive system of new head coach Brett Brown.
“There’s been a lot (of change),” said Hawes. “A lot less sets, a lot more wide open, a lot more 3-pointers. It’s a lot more of the new way of offense I guess.”
While it has opened up the floor for the Sixers and increased their scoring, it hasn’t been a fix-all as they enter play Tuesday night against the Orlando Magic 6-12.
“It’s just different,” Hawes said. “It calls on you to play a different role.”
ROARING 20’s: Evan Turner is averaging 21.3 points per game to start the season. The Sixers haven’t had a player finish a season averaging at least 20 points since Allen Iverson averaged 33 in 2005-06.
In fact, the Sixers haven’t had anyone average more than 17.7 points per game dating back to the ’08-09 season.
