G/F Evan "The Villain" Turner (2010 Naismith Winner)

Turner gets double-double for 76ers
May 12, 2012|By John N. Mitchell, INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

BOSTON - In making it through the first round of the playoffs against a banged-up Chicago team, the 76ers realized that if they are going to have success moving forward they are going to need big efforts from players such as second-year guard Evan Turner.

In the Sixers' 92-91 Game 1 loss to Boston in the second round of the Eastern Conference playoffs on Saturday, Turner did at times what players selected with the No. 2 pick in the draft are supposed to do in big games.

He reached double-figures in scoring for the fifth time in seven playoff games this spring, and he also notched the first double-double - 16 points, 10 rebounds - in the playoffs.

76ers' Turner turns a corner
Starting role in playoffs against Bulls affirmed faith club has in him
By Vaughn McClure, Chicago Tribune reporter
May 12, 2012

Among the basketball collectibles legendary St. Joseph High School coach Gene Pingatore has scattered around his home is a not-so flattering article about one of his former star players: Evan Turner.

Pingatore hasn't glanced at the clipping for quite some time, but the overall tone of the story still makes him shake his head in disbelief.

"After Evan was drafted and started to play last season, one of the Philadelphia papers was talking about him being a bust as an NBA player,'' Pingatore said. "But then by the end of last year, especially in the playoffs, you could see he was starting to emerge.

"And this year, I think he has proven that there's no question he's going to be tied to the future success of the 76ers ? if they decide to keep him.''

Well, in the eyes of the organization, Turner is a keeper.

"He's going to be a very good player in the league,'' said 76ers President Rod Thorn. "He has a good feel for the game. He's a very tough-minded kid. I just think he has a good future.''

Maybe the future is now.

Evan Turner learning his way with 76ers
By Gary Washburn

Celtics fans saw a bit of the versatility of the 76ers? Evan Turner Saturday night, such as when he easily made a midrange jumper over Rajon Rondo or soared for a rebound to begin a Philadelphia fast break.

While Turner may have struggled against some other NBA clubs, he has turned into a problem for the Celtics. At 6 feet 7 inches, Turner is a difficult matchup because he can play point guard, has the offensive skills of a shooting guard, and the size of a small forward.

While he is one of a handful of potential cornerstones for the 76ers, he is the most intriguing. Picked second out of Ohio State (behind Kentucky?s John Wall) in the 2010 NBA draft, Turner was criticized for his slow adaptation to the NBA. While Wall was racing down the court whipping the ball to teammates, Turner was stuck on the Philadelphia bench, a player with no position, not in premium condition, and lost in Doug Collins?s defensive-minded system.

Turner averaged 7.2 points and shot 42.5 percent from the field in his rookie season. His numbers improved this season as he gained playing time, averaging 10.6 points following the All-Star break on 45.6 percent shooting.

Evan Turner calms down, comes through for 76ers
PUBLISHED Monday, May 14, 2012
Sean Deveney Sporting News

BOSTON -- Evan Turner was standing by his locker here at TD Garden, a crowd of media members impatiently standing with recorders at the ready. He was comically fumbling in his attempt to slip his cuff links into the sleeve of his shirt.

?Sorry,? he said, trying to explain his sartorial woes. ?These are my draft night cuff links, which pretty much means they?re the only cuff links I own.?

This was too-slow a moment for Turner, a rarity on what was a bizarre and over-energized night for the Philadelphia 76ers starting shooting guard. Just 2:16 into the game, Turner got whacked??below the belt,? as he put it?and had to go to the bench until the pain subsided. He came back seven minutes later, but was playing as if he had to make up for lost time. At halftime, he had just two points and two turnovers, shooting 1-for-4 from the field. He had two points and two more turnovers in the third quarter.

But in the fourth, with the Sixers having squandered a 10-point lead and Boston ahead, 75-74, with 41 seconds to play, Turner made the biggest play of the game. He was isolated beyond the 3-point line on the left wing against Rajon Rondo, when he decided to put his head down and drive. He got past Rondo and into the paint, and was met by help defense from Paul Pierce. He brought the ball low, leapt around Pierce and scooped a shot from his ankles as he fell to the floor. It went in, and the Sixers took a lead they would not relinquish, winning Game 2, 82-81, and evening the conference semifinal series.

In all, Turner?s numbers were not eye-popping. He finished with 10 points and six rebounds, and also had five turnovers and shot just 4-for-11 from the floor. But when the Sixers needed him to make a big play, he came through.

?The thing I am proud about Evan is, he was totally out of sync all night long,? coach Doug Collins said. ?He got hit early in the game, I took him out. He was jumping in the air, leaving his feet, turning the ball over. He was just playing so fast. ... But the thing I was happy about is he bounced back. He was really out of sync the entire night. He had that look in his eyes, where I was just trying to calm him down. I went to him and I said, ?Evan, you?ve got to just calm down, just a little bit.? And he did.?
Evan Turner recovered from a slow first half to finish with 10 points and the go-ahead basket in the 76ers 82-81 win over the Celtics. (AP Photo)

Turner said his problem was over-thinking?when he got back into the game he felt like he had to do everything, all at once.

?When I got hit below the belt, it threw me off,? Turner said. ?I started off on the wrong foot a little bit, I got taken out of the game. So I just tried to find a rhythm, I was trying match the intensity of the game and everything like that. I was trying to be aggressive, maybe a little too much. I think I thought too much a little bit, and when you think too much, that is when you mess up.?

Evan Turner steps up for 76ers
By Bob Ford / The Philadelphia Inquirer
Tuesday, May 15, 2012

BOSTON ? Evan Turner, who had played the entire game taking way too many chances, wasn?t going to risk another as he drove toward the basket with the Sixers trailing by one point and just over 40 seconds to play against the Boston Celtics [team stats] on Monday night.

The Sixers had led by 10 points late in the third quarter and saw that lead steadily drip away, just as it did in Game 1 of this series. If Turner didn?t take care of the ball and get it safely to the basket, the Sixers were looking at another gee-whiz loss to the Celtics and a two-games-to-none series hole.

So, Turner took off from the left wing, picking his way through the Boston defenders like a man dodging puddles on a rainy street. He cradled the ball in his right arm near the end, running back-style, then switched it to his left as he flew beneath the basket and laid it in delicately from the reverse side.

It wasn?t the best game of Turner?s career, but it was the biggest, and his determined drive to the basket can serve as a microcosm of how the Sixers are playing now. It isn?t pretty basketball. It isn?t consistent basketball. But in those final furious minutes, they can hang around long enough to get a win.

Veteran Celtics toughen up Sixers' Turner
May 16, 2012

Evan Turner had no choice but to toughen up fast against the Celtics.

Evan Turner grew up watching Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce play basketball.

He was a fan of the trio, each of whom are more than 10 years his senior. If he had attended public school, Turner would have went to Garnett?s alma mater, Farragut Academy, in Chicago.

When Turner played against the Boston Celtics last season as a 22-year-old rookie on the Philadelphia 76ers, he was already familiar with his opponents from what he had seen of them on TV.

Then the veterans introduced him to their game in the NBA. They tested the young guard during his first year in the NBA, a challenge he appreciates now.

?Watching them on TV and playing against them is two different things,? Turner told CSNNE.com. ?First few times we played against them, they kicked our butts. One of the best things is getting your butts kicked and paying your dues. I can?t say it enough -- paying your dues and earning the right to play well and earning the right to play well versus them, that?s the most important thing.?

The Celtics took the 2010-11 regular season series against the 76ers, 3-1. One year later, they are faced off in a Eastern Conference Semifinals series tied at one apiece.

After averaging 8.3 points and 2.3 rebounds against the C's as a rookie, Turner is posting 13.0 points and 8.0 rebounds in the first two games of the series.

?Rebounding is all about desire,? he said. ?If you want to go get it, you go get it. That?s pretty much it. That?s how I was always taught. I don?t look at it any other way. I just look at as they expect me to rebound and I want to go get the ball, I?ll go get it in any situation.?

Turner fights through early struggles in Sixers' win
May 19, 2012

Evan Turner was really bad Friday night. He shot 5 for 22, for goodness sake, in Game 4 of the Sixers? Eastern Conference semifinal series against Boston.

But he was also really good. He scored half of his 16 points in that monstrous 37-16 second-half run, which took the Sixers from 18 down early in the third quarter to three up with nine minutes left, en route to an unlikely 92-83 victory (see game recap).

More bad: Four of his shots were blocked ? two each by Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

And more good: He claimed nine rebounds.

Had to be the best bad night of his brief NBA career. Or the worst good one.

?I guess,? he said. ?Again, you can?t worry about shots. Last game I was missing shots (going 1 for 10 and scoring four points in the Game 3 loss). This game, I missed some. They were going in and out and stuff. That?s life. Who cares??

Mission accomplished for 76ers' Turner
By John N. Mitchell
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER

The 76ers have looked for Evan Turner to grab rebounds, start the fastbreak when the opportunity presents, and to score more. It's something that Sixers coach Doug Collins has implored him to do.

But one of his more pressing assignments going into Wednesday's win-or-go-home Game 6 victory over the Boston Celtics at Wells Fargo Center was to play a major role in helping to slow Boston's mercurial point guard Rajon Rondo.

Not an easy task in this series, which has seen Rondo, on top of averaging 14.4 points and 14.6 assists through five games, mostly control the tempo in just about every game.

A huge part of Turner's responsibility was to spread his 6-foot-7 frame out for long stretches of the game and impede Rondo's progress.

Mission accomplished.

Rondo was pedestrian at best on Wednesday, finishing the game with nine points on 4-of-14 shooting. His nine assists marked the first time in the series that he has not finished with at least 13 assists.

Collins gave assistant coach Michael Curry credit for formulating the defense that stopped Rondo.

"When you play Rondo you've got to give him different looks," Collins said. "He gets so settled in. I think we did a better job with some of the things that he likes to do. Our coverages were a little different and we didn't get strung out as much."

"I thought they clogged the paint up pretty well on [Rondo]," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "I thought they used other guys, including Turner, to cut off the seams. But I also thought we hurt ourselves with our pace. We never established any pace to the game."

Turner's exhaustive defensive effort drained him of the energy to do just about anything else. Turner finished the game with 12 points, nine rebounds - second on the team behind Elton Brand's 10 - one assists and four turnovers

Sixers? Evan Turner doesn?t fear turnovers
By Amalie Benjamin
| Globe Staff
May 24, 2012

PHILADELPHIA ? Despite the sometimes erratic, sometimes turnover-filled play of Evan Turner, Sixers coach Doug Collins has encouraged the guard not to shy away, not to stop being competitive to cut down on the mistakes.

?It is what it is, man,? Turner said, before Game 6. ?We all make mistakes, we?re going to mess up. I?m not going to be concerned with messing up or errors or anything like that.

?I?m coming out to compete. Basketball?s not perfect. If it was, I would be shooting 1,000 percent, no turnovers and stuff like that. Sometimes you?ve got to force certain situations to get things going, you play with feel. I think the key thing is as long as I don?t turn the ball over everything will be fine.?

Turner has turned the ball over 11 times in the five game series, including four turnovers in Game 1 and five in Game 2. But it hasn?t only been those mistakes.

Turner, who shot 44.6 percent in the regular season is shooting just 35.6 percent in the playoffs ? and even lower in the series against the Celtics. In the second round, Turner has made just 22-of-69 shots (31.9 percent).

Part of that, of course, is an impressive Celtics defense.

?Usually you can [see help from inside], but the Celtics defense is really good, where it at times it?s not easy to see out,? Turner said. ?It is what it is.?

Is Evan Turner in the Right Spot?
By ROB MAHONEY

Evan Turner of the Sixers, right, going up for a shot against Kevin Garnett of the Celtics on Wednesday.Matt Slocum/Associated PressEvan Turner of the Sixers, right, going up for a shot against Kevin Garnett of the Celtics on Wednesday.

Few N.B.A. players could claim a postseason run more curious than that of Evan Turner. The 76ers guard is an off-the-dribble creator in exactly the mold that Philadelphia?s offense demands, and yet against the top-notch defenses of the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics, Turner has been shockingly inefficient. Beckley Mason of ESPN.com summed up Turner?s position rather well on TrueHoop:

Turner often looks like a good player ? he?s got all the moves. He will spin and cross over and generally look like a genuine scorer, except the ball hardly ever goes in and he doesn?t work his way to the line all that often. The Celtics? defense was designed to handle iso-heavy scorers like Kobe Bryant, so suffice to say it works pretty well when Turner decides it?s ?iso time.?

Mason says it all in that initial phrase: ?Turner often looks like a good player.? Yet the further we dig into his box score contributions, his shooting percentages from particular zones on the floor, his advanced stats, and his adjusted plus-minus, the worse the overall picture becomes. Turner is theoretically ? and visibly ? able to create, but when forced to operate against defenses with such terrific discipline, his possessions often end with a flailing attempt over the outstretched arms of multiple defenders.

Philadelphia's future hinges on Evan Turner.

turneradix-inset-community.jpg

The second pick in the 2010 draft hasn't looked the part, but the 76ers are in need of identity. Turner was expected to be an offensive conduit, a skilled swingman who played point guard at Ohio State. But his power scoring hasn't translated, and he can't hit jump shots. Turner shot 33.8% from the field in the seven-game series against the Celtics, with 10 of his shots blocked despite his athleticism and size. Coach Doug Collins would love to build his team around Turner and point guard Jrue Holiday, but Andre Iguodala instead has carried the mantle on the wings. "I can't begin to describe how disappointed I am in Evan Turner. Train wreck after game 3 of CHI series. I don't want silver lining," 76ers blogger Derek Bodner tweeted.

This always annoys me with some of the national media, and often with USA Today. Who the hell is Derek Bodner? I went to his blog. It looks like something out of the mid 90's, and is just some random 76ers dbag fan (I know, redundant). Yet his POS tweet ends up in USA Today like it's a legit criticism of Evan from a reputable sports journalist. What a freaking joke. I can't really blame Bodner. He is just a random dbag with a blog and a twitter account. Yet this Adi Joseph is a lazy chicken shit writer. If you are going to print that kind of stuff, either take a stand and say it yourself or at least find someone with a real reputation in the industry.

I am not saying Evan doesn't deserve some criticism for his play, but I am simply pointing out that article is a complete piece of garbage. Sadly more and more of that stuff is being passed off as real journalism today.

Evan Turner

Age: 23

Experience: Second year, both with Sixers.

Key stats: Averaged 9.4 points and 5.8 rebounds; made 20 starts.

Contract: Team options of $5.3 million next season and $6.7 million the season after. Qualifying offer of $8.7 in 2014-15.

Breakdown: The enigmatic Turner had one of the most up-and-down seasons of any player on the roster. Not being given the starting spot out of training camp, during which time Turner shined, no doubt played major head games with the second-year pro. He was given the starting job midway through the season, had it taken away again, then got it back in the second game of the playoffs. He proved to be the tough, rebounding player the team needed and should be a staple in the starting lineup next season. He and Collins both acknowledged that his midrange game needs to improve. If that happens, his offensive numbers could skyrocket.

Probability of return: 98 percent.

Ex-Sixer Jim Jackson: Turner best suited to play point guard

CHICAGO - Since the question of whether or not the Sixers? Evan Turner is a point guard, shooting guard or small forward is a constant source of discussion, I figured that asking former Ohio State guard Jim Jackson (a veteran of 14 NBA seasons that included a brief stint with the Sixers) to weigh in on what he feels is the best way for the Sixers to maximize Turner?s talent was an appropriate question for the never-ending debate.

?The system best suited for Evan is a system that allows him to have the ball in his hands,? said Jackson, an analyst for the Big Ten Network. ?If Evan is really going to be the player that he wants to be and can be, he needs the ball in his hands. ?

The former guard and fourth overall pick in the 1992 by the Dallas Mavericks, Jackson said that initially when the Sixers selected Turner with the second pick in 2010 draft he thought it was a bad spot for him because he felt that Turner?s game would clash with point guard Jrue Holiday?s.

?I didn?t really like that pick early on for him because he?s the type of player that needs the ball in his hands. He?s not a catch-and-shoot player, but he?s a creative player off the dribble. With players like Lou Williams and Andre Iguodala and Jrue there?s just not enough time for Evan to have the ball in his hands and he struggled with is his first year. This past year I think you saw coach Collins have a little more confidence in him and handle the ball a little bit more.

Jackson said that if the Sixers remain constituted the way they are, Turner, if he?s going to continue to get better, is going to have to continue to work on his ability to catch-and-shoot. He believes that Turner does this, Collins will continue to expand his role and he will continue to show improvement.

But will Turner ever be the star that we expect a guy selected with the second overall pick in the draft to become?

?It?s really about being a professional,? Jackson said. ?He has to figure out how to work well off the ball. That?s a part of being a professional, constantly working to hone your craft. I believe that if he does that Doug Will continue to expand his role.

?Can he become a star?? Jackson continued. ?It?s all dictated on the system. In this league you can be a very good player, a great player in the wrong system and you can get lost. Or you can be a mediocre in the right system and look like an all star. It?s usually the talent that overrides everything, but sometimes the system dictates.?

So what works best for Turner?

?Can he become a star? It?s all dictated on the system,? Jackson said. ?In this league you can be a very good player, a great player in the wrong system, and you can get lost. Or you can be a mediocre player in the right system and look like an all-star. It?s the talent that overrides but sometimes it?s the system. If you?re starting from scratch, though, you want the ball in his hands and go from there.?
