Setting Turner on a routine
By BOB COONEY
Daily News Staff Writer

THE RELATIONSHIP between 76ers coach Doug Collins and second-year guard Evan Turner is not a strained one. There is no personal animosity, no grudges held.

Has the coach been as complimentary about Turner as he has other players? Probably not. Has Turner been in his coach's doghouse more than most other players? Probably.

But it appears it is all part of the teaching process Collins believes Turner needs in order to become the best NBA player he can be.

In order for that to happen, Collins is convinced Turner needs structure, so he and associate head coach Michael Curry have taken to providing that recently.

"Evan is a guy who needs a lot of structure, and I mean that in a positive way," Collins said. "He needs a schedule and Michael Curry has been meeting with him every day and Jesse [Wright], our strength and conditioning coach, and they do 30 minutes or 25 minutes every single day where we get him into a routine and I think that's really helped him. Evan needs that.

Gunn: Time for Turner to get more time
April 8, 2012

Sixers head coach Doug Collins says his starters are running out of chances to produce, and changes could be coming in the immediate future.

If that is the case, then it?s time to turn one of his starters, Evan Turner, loose. In order to build confidence, you have to consistently play, and for a young player like Turner, I believe he should consistently get at least 35 minutes per game.

Will he make mistakes? Absolutely. But there?s nothing like on-the-job training to overcome your miscues.

In the Sixers' last three games, Turner played 40 minutes against Miami and scored 26 points, 26 minutes vs. Toronto and delivered just four points. Against the Magic, his 19 minutes on the floor produced just six points.

But this is a player you?re going to be counting on come playoff time (if the sixers make the playoffs) and over these last 11 games, he shouldn?t have to worry about looking over his shoulder every time he makes a mistake.

You want his confidence sky high from here on, not fractured.

Turner still looking to find way under Collins
April 7, 2012

Allen Iverson and Larry Brown had a player/coach relationship that pulled you in. It was contentious at times, endearing other days, but it was as addictive a twosome to watch and follow as Erica Kane and her husband du jour on All My Children.

Brown made Iverson a better player despite Iverson doing little on his own to do the same.

They did not always see eye to eye and there were ?he said/he said? days on more than one occasion. But Iverson was a superstar and Brown was a no brainer bound for the Hall of Fame before it actually happened.

Did you think Brown didn?t like Iverson?

The fact that Brown had Iverson traded in the summer of 2000 to the Pistons certainly had people thinking just that, but Matt Geiger put the kibosh on that move allowing for a run to the NBA Finals and eventually we witnessed Iverson sitting on Brown?s lap when he accepted the MVP award.

Relationships have peaks and valleys.

That brings me to Doug Collins and Evan Turner. There are many fans that e-mail me constantly saying it is obvious that Collins doesn?t like Turner. They believe the coach takes Turner?s minutes but doesn?t take others. They look and see a guy who needs the ball in his hands and wonder why he is being asked to do something different than that.

So I asked what I believe has been asked but just not answered the way people want it to be.

Turner unhappy about reserve status
Apr. 13, 2012
Written by

For the Courier-Post

PHILADELPHIA ? Evan Turner came off the bench for the third straight game Friday against the New Jersey Nets. He?s still not happy about it.

But Turner said he?s going to ?make the most of my minutes.? He showed that Wednesday against Toronto, as he played 24 minutes with 6 points, 6 assists and 8 rebounds.

?It only makes it easier because we?re winning,? Turner said. ?That?s it. There?s nothing really else. It?s for the team.?

Turner had been a starter for 18 straight games before Sixers coach Doug Collins replaced Turner and Spencer Hawes in the lineup with Jodie Meeks and Nikola Vucevic, respectively.

At the time, the Sixers had lost four straight and 10 of 14, and had often gotten off to slow starts. Turner sensed that his time as a starter was coming to an end, even though he averaged 11.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists as a starter. As a reserve, Turner is averaging 7.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists.

?When (Collins) said he was going to switch up the starting lineup because we weren?t scoring, it didn?t take a genius to know I was who he was talking about,? Turner said.

DEITCH: Evan?s preference to turn attention to Bulls
Published: Sunday, April 22, 2012
By DENNIS DEITCH
[email protected], @DennisDeitch

INDIANAPOLIS ? The 76ers entered Saturday night with business to which they needed to tend. There was a game to play against the team with the fifth-best record in the NBA and a three-game lead over Milwaukee that needed to be protected in order to sew up a playoff spot.

And a road win over Indiana would put them in a tie for seventh in the Eastern Conference with New York ? although the Knicks technically lead that race courtesy of the tiebreaker.

So there was basketball that needed to be played, and needed to be played well.

That doesn?t mean they are oblivious to the options.

Evan Turner is a Chicago native, and he knows that the Sixers? options for an opponent in the first round is between the Bulls and the Miami Heat.

Turner not bothered by 'fabrications' in book
April 24, 2012,
GORDIE JONES

The Sixers? Evan Turner said Monday he has read parts of the new book Don?t Put Me In, Coach: My Incredible NCAA Journey From the End of the Bench to the End of the Bench, by former Ohio State teammate Mark Titus -- a book that often depicts Turner in an unfavorable light -- but dismissed its contents as ?fabrications? and exaggerations.

Turner nonetheless maintained that he is not the least bit upset by it.

?One thing about that book -- he forgot the part where I skin puppies for Cruella de Vil,? he said with a laugh before the Sixers beat New Jersey to clinch a playoff berth.

Titus, a former walk-on guard for the Buckeyes, is the creator of the popular blog ?Club Trillion.? In his book, he wrote that Turner -- whom he dubbed ?The Villain? when they were teammates -- was ?weird? and ?the epitome of a guy who couldn?t take a joke? and that Turner ?tried to fight (him) no less than three times and actually threw punches on one of those.?

Titus also wrote that Turner was ?insecure, socially feebleminded, possibly bipolar, and often callous perfectionist who had all the talent in the world, who lacked self-confidence and the ability to trust in anybody around him? but beyond that was ?actually one of the nicest guys you?ll ever meet when he wanted to be.? And, he added, the two of them ?fully respect one another and more often than not get along.?

Asked about the book Monday, Turner said, ?I don?t even worry about it. ? He made a book based on him being an angel. It?s like, no way. I was just like, this kid is crazy. I text-messaged him and said, ?All due respect, if you really believe that?s how it happened, you need to mature.??

But Turner claims there is no malice on his part.

?You accept Mark for Mark,? he said. ?I laugh at him, but I?ve got enough stuff to worry about without some guy telling stories to make money. You expect that from Titus, you know? When you accept somebody for who they are, you don?t get mad. He?s one of those guys who likes attention, so he started the blog, (and) he writes a book or whatever to keep the attention on him. You understand that?s what he likes, and that?s what keeps him going. That?s Mark, you know? ? I love him for who he is. I don?t get mad at that type of stuff.?

Evan Turner wants Bulls matchup
Updated: April 25, 2012
By Nick Friedell | ESPNChicago.com

INDIANAPOLIS -- Philadelphia 76ers guard Evan Turner wants to face the Chicago Bulls in a first-round series.

The second-year swingman made that clear while discussing the potential first-round series between the Sixers and Bulls. When asked what it would mean to face the Bulls, the Chicago native told the Delaware County Times, "It means we're dodging the tougher team. That's what I think."

Heading into the final day of the regular season Thursday, the Sixers are on track to face the Bulls in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. That's a matchup that Turner is looking forward to.

"I think we'll be able to compete well against Chicago," Turner told the Times, "and have an opportunity to win the series."

Derrick Rose, Evan Turner set to rekindle rivalry in NBA playoffs
BY MICHAEL O?BRIEN [email protected] April 26, 2012

St Joseph's #35 Evan Turner moves the ball against Derrick Rose during first half game action at UIC....JON SALL/SUN-TIMES

Derrick Rose began earning his reputation as an understated, humble basketball star back in high school. He?s carried it with him into college and the NBA.

But there was one opponent who seemed to get under his skin, and it?s someone he may be seeing a lot of very soon: Philadelphia?s Evan Turner, who played at St. Joseph.

The Rose/Turner rivalry heated up this week when Turner was asked about finishing eighth in the Eastern Conference and playing the Bulls instead of the Heat.

?That means we?re dodging the tougher team,? he told the Delaware County Times.

Rose shook off Turner?s comment, but there is little question that the rivalry is for real.

It started, at least publicly, in March of 2007. It was of one of the biggest games of the year, a showdown between Simeon and St. Joseph at Northwestern.

Rose was regarded as the top player in the state. Turner was challenging Rose for player of the year honors.

At halftime, standing near center court, Turner said ?Derrick Rose ain?t [crap].?

Sixers? Turner helps set tone for series
By Mike McGraw

When it comes to the Bulls and playoff rivals, being from Chicago doesn?t grant a player any sort of immunity. Just ask Isiah Thomas, Mark Aguirre or Dwyane Wade.

So Philadelphia?s Evan Turner will be an interesting case study when the Bulls and 76ers play their first-round series, with Game 1 set for Saturday at noon at the United Center. Game 2 is Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Turner has been in the news because he told the Delaware County (Pa.) Times last weekend he thinks the Bulls would be a better playoff matchup for the Sixers than Miami.

?I think we?ll be able to compete well against Chicago and have an opportunity to win the series,? Turner said. ?It means we?re dodging the tougher team. That?s what I think.?

Turner puts history aside to focus on matchup
April 27, 2012

CHICAGO -- After Evan Turner scored 29 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the win over Milwaukee Wednesday, Doug Collins said of Turner, "I know this: He is this he is going to get a ton of minutes in the playoffs.?

Friday, after his team went through a walkthrough practice at the United Center in Chicago in preparation for Game 1 against the Bulls, Collins said he still felt the same way.

?Evan is one of our better players, number one,? Collins said. ?Number two, when you go up against Chicago, you had better have playmakers because they play such good defense. They will try and run you out of your plays.

"He is one of our better rebounders and the key to this series is going to be rebounding and a lot of that is going to be on our wings. Andre (Iguodala) is going to have to rebound the ball and so is Evan. They have one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the NBA, which causes a lot of problems and we are going to have to contain Rose, so we may have to use Evan because of his size playing against Rose a little bit.?

76ers? Evan Turner not affected by boos in his hometown
BY MICHAEL O?BRIEN [email protected] April 28, 2012
Updated: April 29, 2012

The boos rained down on the Philadelphia 76ers? Evan Turner every time he touched the ball
Saturday at the United Center.

His rivalry with Bulls star Derrick Rose and his now-infamous ??better matchup?? quote last week have turned the St. Joseph High School graduate into Public Enemy No. 1 in his hometown.

The remarkable thing is, it didn?t seem to bother him at all. Remember, this is a guy who was nicknamed ??The Villain?? in college ? and that was by a teammate, Ohio State basketball player/blogger-turned-author Mark Titus.

Turner, who was born and raised just blocks from the United Center, finished with 12 points and five assists. He didn?t start the game, but he impressed 76ers coach Doug Collins enough that he started the second half.

??I thought Evan played well,?? Collins said. ??Evan is going to have to be out there for us. When you play against the Bulls, you have to have playmakers. Evan did a good job of that.??

Then came the dust-up in the third quarter. With just more than four minutes left in the quarter, Turner and Bulls forward Carlos
Boozer got their arms tangled,
resulting in some pushing and shoving and lots of jawing between the teams.

A foul was called on Turner. Technical fouls were called on Rose, Bulls guard Rip Hamilton and 76ers forward Elton Brand.

At that point, any chance of Turner winning over his hometown crowd was over. He had
become ??The Villain?? that is a necessary component of any good NBA playoff series.

Turner took it all in stride, though, charming the media with some humor after the game and not exactly living up to his nickname.

??I think it was just Boozer,?? Turner said. ??We bumped into each other, and he tried to come under my arm. He bumped me, like, twice. It wasn?t anything to go nuts about. I dodged a technical, and that was pretty much it.??

76ers Notebook: Turner hears boos, faces old rival in playoff homecoming
Apr. 28, 2012
Written by
MARTIN FRANK
The News Journal

CHICAGO ? Evan Turner was born and raised in Chicago, and played in high school and AAU ball against Bulls guard Derrick Rose.

Yet Turner was booed every time he touched the ball Saturday. Part of it was for comments he made Thursday when he said he was glad the Sixers are playing the top-seeded Bulls instead of No. 2 seed Miami.

In reality, Turner?s comment made sense. The Sixers have lost 10 straight regular-season games to the Heat and 14 of 15 including the playoffs last season. It?s a bad matchup for the Sixers, who have split the last six regular-season games against the Bulls.

But there was also his rivalry against Rose. There was one incident in March 2007 in a playoff game, when Turner and Rose were jawing at each other. Rose was considered the best player in the state, and Turner was considered right behind him.

Rose?s team ended up winning the game.

So how did Turner feel about the hometown guy coming home to hear boos, especially with several friends and family members in attendance?

?I didn?t think much of it,? Turner said. ?Unless you?re on the court, it doesn?t matter.
People were saying, ?Did you want us?? The players didn?t have any problem with it. They knew I didn?t say anything. It was all blown up. That?s who you worry about, your opponent and your teammates.?

Sixers' Turner takes Chitown?s ire in stride

CHICAGO ? The man nicknamed ?The Villain? by a college teammate got to be the real deal Saturday afternoon to 21,000-plus people in the United Center.

Evan Turner?s comment to the Daily Times last weekend that he and the 76ers would have ?dodged the tougher opponent? if they were to play Chicago instead of Miami caused a gradual, yet intense uproar once it reached the eyeballs of Windy City residents.

When Turner entered the Game 1 of the teams? first-round playoff series for the first time late in the first quarter, the crowd laid a lusty boo on him.

The first time he touched the ball, more boos. The second time, more boos. And pretty much any time Turner had the ball in his hands for an extended time, he heard it.

Well, actually, he says he didn?t hear it ? or at least didn?t care.

?They?re not playing on the court,? Turner said of the fans after he had 12 points, five assists, three rebounds and three steals in the Sixers? 103-91 loss. ?To tell the truth, I just worry about my teammates, my opponent, and the positive people like my family in the stands. I can?t worry about that.

?I really don?t pay attention to them whatsoever. They aren?t on the court. They?re irrelevant.?

it seems like every quote I ever read from Doug Collins regarding Evan Turner is seemingly an apology of why ET isn't playing more and that he pledges to make sure ET sees more playing time.

Collins mismanages players more than he manages them....it was that way in Chicago and appears that way in Philadelphia. Argh.

It's time for Turner
BY BOB COONEY

CHICAGO - The 76ers got two points from their starting shooting guard in Saturday's 103-91 loss to the Chicago Bulls in Game 1.

After a dismal 7 minutes and 29 seconds of play in the first quarter that included a miss on a wide-open jump shot, a bad turnover and an even-worse foul of a jump shooter, coach Doug Collins pulled Jodie Meeks and kept him on the bench for most of the remainder of the game.

Evan Turner took most of the minutes and coach Doug Collins said after the game that his team needs the type of playmaking ability that Turner possesses. He finished with 12 points, five assists and three steals in almost 30 minutes.

After the team's short practice Sunday at the United Center, Collins was asked if Turner would replace Meeks in the starting lineup.

"I have to think about it," Collins said. "I'm not going to show my hand right now. I have 2 days to prepare so I'll see about that."

Translation: Goodbye Meeks, hello Turner.
