ORLANDO, Fla. ? Evan Turner said his goal for All-Star weekend was to have fun. Winning and playing well usually equate to a fun time, which is why Turner accomplished his goal on Friday night.

Turner and Team Chuck beat Team Shaq, 146-133, in the BBVA Rising Stars Challenge.

Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in 2010, got the starting nod in the game ahead of John Wall, who was the top pick in that draft. That was a satisfying gesture, considering Turner was not named to this event a year ago, though Turner downplayed the significance.

?I just wanted to get off to a good start and help the team win,? Turner said. ?That?s what it is about.?

He can thank fellow Chicago native Maurice Cheeks for putting him in the starting lineup. By virtue of having the best record in the west, the Oklahoma City staff will coach the Western All-Stars on Sunday and Chicago?s staff will be in charge of the Eastern squad. The top assistant coaches from those respective staffs were assigned a Rising Stars team to coach.

Cheeks, who coached the Sixers for three-plus seasons before being fired in December of 2008, never coached Turner in Philadelphia but played him a team-high 14 minutes in the first half. Turner made 6 of 6 from the floor in the first, led Team Chuck in rebounding with seven and he also had a team-high six assists.

By game?s end, Turner had a double-double with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while playing a game-high29 minutes. His assist total was seven.

You could see in Turner's eyes that he was chasing that triple-double.

?It would have been cool,? Turner said. ?It would have been a great thing, but we got the win. I don?t know if you know results from past Rising Star games, but you get to enjoy yourself in the off-season is what you get. It was cool and I am glad I got to play.?

Lynam: Time for Turner's role to increase

ORLANDO, Fla. -- We know that Doug Collins likes people to know their role, stay in their role, and star in their role.

Andre Iguodala is the Sixers' best on-the-ball defender and accepts the challenge every game.

Jrue Holiday's role is to get the team into its offense, which going into the All-Star break was sputtering at best.

Jodie Meeks is in the starting lineup to spread the floor and make shots. He is 3 for 19 from three-point range during the Sixers' current five-game losing streak.

Lou Williams is instant offense in a reserve role. He has made 22 of 66 shots in his last five games.

Thaddeus Young is asked to take advantage of matchups with his quickness, which he does on a consistent basis.

Evan Turner's role is ... a question.

Turner has come off the bench in the 33 games he has played this year. He is averaging 8.2 points and 5.6 rebounds in 23.8 minutes. That is just 0.8 minutes more then he got during his tumultuous rookie year.

He shoots 43.3 percent from the field, but just 25 percent from long range.

Inside the Sixers: Sixers keeping faith in Turner and Holiday

Not long after forward Derrick Favors, the third overall selection in the 2010 NBA draft, stepped in for Al Jefferson and, in his first start as a pro, scored 20 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked a shot to lead Utah to an early-season 102-99 win over the 76ers, the Evan Turner naysayers had ammunition again.

Turner, they contended, was a major mistake for the Sixers, who chose him second in the draft. They said Favors, in whom the Sixers showed some interest leading up to the draft - and just about anyone else, for that matter - would have the Atlantic Division-leading Sixers further along than Turner, who still comes off the bench behind Jodie Meeks.

Falk not pressuring Sixers to play Turner

One-time super-agent David Falk has been conspicuous in his presence around the 76ers locker room in recent days, but don?t read too much into this.

Falk, who has represented Michael Jordan and Allen Iverson in the past, just represents a few players these days, and two of them, Elton Brand and Evan Turner, happen to be Sixers.

With Turner struggling and his minutes on the wan over the last month, there was speculation that Falk ? who takes up residence in suburban Washington ? was in town to attempt to do a little arm-twisting with coach Doug Collins to get Turner more time and perhaps in the starting lineup.

However, a battle royal between Falk and Collins over Turner?s minutes never occurred, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Falk and Collins actually have a very cordial relationship that developed when Collins coached Jordan during his stint as the coach of the Washington Wizards.

I caught up with Falk on Thursday and he said that he came to Philly to meet with Brand and Turner, whom he met with following the team?s loss to Oklahoma City on Wednesday. Falk insisted that he did not try to coerce Collins at all.

?The only thing is that now they have lost six of their last seven games and now it might be time to reevaluate the way they are doing some things,? Falk said. ?They are really having a hard time scoring the basketball.?

There is growing contingent of fans that want to see Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft, get more minutes in order to find out whether or not he is the real deal or a mistake. If Turner does not work out, it could turn into a catastrophic mistake for the franchise, perhaps on the same level as the horrific 1993 draft that saw the Sixers select mega-bust Shawn Bradley with the second overall pick.

Chicago native Turner complimentary of hometown team

PHILADELPHIA ? Back when they were high school seniors in Chicago, Derrick Rose and Evan Turner were rivals at basketball programs steeped with tradition. In the five years since Rose starred at Simeon Career Academy on the South Side and Turner led St. Joseph?s High School in suburban Westchester, Rose has had the higher profile.

But while the second-year swingman can?t quite match the reigning league MVP?s resume, he has his own impressive set of credentials ? national college player of the year at Ohio State, No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft ? and now plays an important role off the bench for 76ers, the top team in the Atlantic Division.

Turner was complimentary about his former prep rival when asked about him Sunday morning, following the Sixers? shootaround.

?The Bulls were good when they got Derrick, but once Derrick started playing they were even better,? said the West Side native. ?He?s developed a long-range shot. He?s developed furthermore into a leader and he?s always been a leader, but he?s become an even bigger leader, putting his team at the top of the NBA. He?s always been a winner.?

If Sunday?s game has the same outcome as the last time the Bulls visited Philadelphia ? a 16-point Sixers win ? don?t expect Turner to be too boastful, even if he has bragging rights over Rose back in the Windy City.

?I don?t really speak to anybody from Chicago like that anymore to even brag, but it?s just another game,? he said diplomatically. ?You?re thankful for it and grateful for the wins, so you?ve got to take advantage of every at-home opportunity because you know on the road, it?s not as easy.?

Time for Sixers to trade Evan Turner and move on

I can't say it's what I would have decided, but I understand the logic behind the choice the Sixers appear to have made.

It will be Andre Iguodala over Evan Turner.

Since a choice eventually must made, I think the Sixers will stick with the known qualities of Iguodala rather than roll the dice on the potential upside of Turner.

The signs are there.

If Turner isn't exactly in Doug Collins' doghouse, it doesn't take much to see that the coach isn't enamored with the No. 2 overall pick of the 2010 draft.

Most damning are his minutes played.

Jodie Meeks, who would be a seventh or eighth man on virtually every other team, plays 26.3 minutes a game while Turner averages 23.7.

It's not because Meeks has started all 36 games, because Collins has always said the five guys who start might not necessarily be the five best players.

But considering how Meeks, who provides little if he's not hitting three-pointers, has struggled with his shooting consistency this season, the disparity in minutes says more about what Turner has not done than what Meeks has.

Meeks has run an average of 33.3 minutes the last three games, while Turner got fewer than 20.

The high draft pick touted as the shooting guard of the future can't beat out a minimum-wage guy, who ranks near the bottom in scoring for starting "two" guards.

On Thursday in an interview on 97.5 The Fanatic, Sixers president Rod Thorn was asked bluntly by host Mike Missanelli why Turner can't get more minutes.

Thorn acknowledged that Turner likely wants more minutes, but added, "The Catch-22 is that you have to play at a level that the coach feels would make you deserving of those extra minutes.

"Right now, [Turner] is behind Iguodala, who plays the position that [Turner] is probably more suited for at this point and time anyway. [Turner] does play in the backcourt as a 'two' guard. A lot of his minutes have come there.

Turner under the gun for Sixers

IT CERTAINLY seemed like a sink or swim night for 76ers second-year forward Evan Turner on Monday, when coach Doug Collins threw him into the starting lineup and piled more playing time on him (32 minutes, 11 seconds) than he has gotten since Jan. 11.

Turner started in place of Jodie Meeks, who entered Monday's game against the Milwaukee Bucks mired in a 8-for-32 shooting slump from three-point range. Not a good sign when all you're really asked to do is drain the long jumper on a somewhat consistent basis. But Collins had stuck with Meeks before Monday, giving him the majority of minutes for the most part at the "two" guard. And though his three-point shot was missing, Meeks was finding other ways to score, having hit double figures in three of the five games before Monday.

Meanwhile, Turner's minutes have been dropping, with none coming at the end of close games. Collins said Turner's minutes were being soaked up by Andre Iguodala, who was needed on the court for his defense. Lou Williams also has been carrying serious minutes to try to help alleviate the team's offensive struggles. And all the time, Turner has mostly watched. For the year, he is averaging a little less than 24 minutes a game. So why was he out there for so many minutes in Monday's 97-93 loss? Was Collins looking for a spark on a team that has been pretty much without one for 3 weeks? Or is it something else?
