Sixers' Turner preparing for more minutes
June 22, 2012

Evan Turner made significant strides for the Sixers this past season.

The Sixers? shooting guard in 2011-12 averaged 9.4 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists after collecting 7.2 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game during his rookie campaign.

Despite his noteworthy improvements, the 23-year-old knows he has more work to do this off-season.

?Getting stronger, trying to get in better shape, getting mentally tougher," Turner told Sixers Insider Dei Lynam in the video above. ?And, [I?m] trying to prepare to play a lot more minutes.?

CHERRY HILL ? On Thursday, commissioner David Stern will announce whom the Sixers will select with the No. 15 overall pick in the NBA Draft.

Two years ago, the Sixers selected Ohio State?s Evan Turner with the No. 2 overall pick. On Tuesday, Turner made an appearance at the Katz Jewish Community Center for a Sixers youth basketball camp and reflected on his own draft experience.

?The draft was really quick. I can?t even really remember it,? Turner said. ?I was drafted at about 7 that night, and by the time you?re done interviews it?s 11. You do an after party until 3 (a.m.) and then you?re up at 6 a.m. and you?re going to your (team?s) city. It was a lot of fun, though.?

?That experience gives us more confidence as a team going into the Playoffs next year, to know that we do have the opportunity to advance to the next round,? Turner said. ?We understand what it takes to get there. We understand the trials and tribulations that you go through, and it makes that light at the end of the tunnel even brighter for us. We were one game from going to the Conference Finals, and then anything can happen from there. So making it to the NBA Finals is more realistic to us now.?

Competing in Playoff basketball against guys like Rip Hamilton, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce is something Turner says he personally can build on heading into his third NBA season.

?Rip was great to go up against for me personally because he?s a great competitor,? Turner said. ?Seeing how he works off ball screens and competes at that level was a good experience for me. I also learned a lot going up against Ray and Paul, too. Watching their whole mentality on how they attack, and just challenging myself against those guys was great.?

Collins told Turner his decision to up his minutes in the Playoffs was about those matchups, and Turner did his part to capitalize on the opportunity: ?Coach just said that we had to use the matchups to our advantage. Once the second half of Game 1 started, he talked to me about being ready. I feel like I?m always ready and whenever somebody puts that trust in me, that?s the most important thing they can give me, and I tried to make the most of that trust.?

Stefanski thinks Turner will have 'breakout year'
July 16, 201

He may no longer be part of the Sixers' front office, but former GM Ed Stefanski played a large role in the team?s success last season.

Many players that made up the Sixers? core, like Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner, were brought in by Stefanski.

Jordan Sams of Liberty Ballers recently talked with Stefanski about the Sixers? roster.

In particular, he had some interesting things to say about Turner.

?I always thought Evan was a point forward or point guard ? a three-man, who could play the point,? Stefanski said. ?With Lou gone, I think Doug will use him as the backup point guard ? he'll start him, but when they sub for Jrue, I think Evan will be the guy.

??In order to become a great player, he's going to have to become a better shooter, but I really believe he's going to have a breakout year this year.?

Stefanski also noted that moving Turner to a sixth-man role probably isn?t the right decision.

?I don't think Evan would like coming off the bench,? Stefanski said. ?The mentality probably isn't there, so I think Doug's doing the right thing by starting him. I think Doug's comfortable with him starting.?

Evan Turner Is Poised For A Breakout Season

Evan Turner has generally been the odd man out, following the aftermath of the Andrew Bynum trade. Jrue Holiday is the consensus Robin, to Bynum's Batman, while Turner is viewed as "That BUST, who can't shoot a lick".

Many are down on Turner, because he shot something like, 11 percent, in the Playoffs. But I remain one of The Villain's biggest supporters. I've been an advocate of Turner as the sixth man, but I remain confident ? regardless of role ? that Turner is going to have a breakout 2012-13 season.

Star-divide

Departure of Andre Iguodala

Andre Iguodala is a great player. He was the face of the franchise for half a decade, and his departure leaves the Sixers without the best perimeter defender in the NBA. However; trading him for Andrew Bynum was a no-brainer ? not only did it provide the Sixers with the second best center in the league, and legitimate superstar, it also opened the door for Evan Turner to fulfill the All-Star potential many believed he had at Ohio State.

Although Iguodala's usage rate was relatively low, he was always involved in the offense ? often times initiating it, as the point forward. There were flashes of cohesion between Turner and Iguodala, but for the most part, their individual success was mutually exclusive.

Statistically, Evan Turner's best game occurred when Iguodala was on the bench. In a road victory over the Bucks, Turner recorded 29 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists, while Iguodala got the DNP. Like I said, the two occasionally both played well together, but all seven of Turner's 20 point games came when he attempted more shots than Dre.

Furthermore, Turner played in three lineups throughout the regular season, without Iguodala, whom logged at least 75 total minutes. Those lineups, with Turner at small forward, collectively scored 110 points per 100 possessions, while allowing less than 96. Of course, these numbers represent a small sample size ? and these lineups were usually playing against weaker competition (benches) ? but there's still enough data to feel optimistic about Turner adequately filling Dre's role of universal swingman.

With Bynum on board, time is now for Holiday, Turner
August 16, 2012

Obviously, the 2012-13 season is going to be a big one for the 76ers. With Andrew Bynum transforming the makeup of the team, several players are going to be counted on to have big seasons.

Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner rank at the top of that list.

Holiday, the Sixers? 22-year-old point guard headed into his fourth season, and Turner, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 draft, are facing crossroads in their young careers. For Holiday, it?s a contract year and there was a report that came out at the beginning of the off-season that he was going to be looking for a max contract.

Turner, after being brought along slowly in his first two NBA seasons, likely will be a starter for coach Doug Collins this season. After two inconsistent seasons at the start of his career, Turner won?t be looking over his shoulder anymore. He?s going to have the chance to sink or swim.

?It?s going to give him more opportunity. If you look at last year, we had four guys who wanted to finish games ? we had [Lou Williams] and Evan and Jrue and [Andre Iguodala],? Collins said. ?Evan is going to take a great step leadership-wise.?

Collins said Turner is currently in Atlanta working out with new teammate Kwame Brown and Sixers assistant coach Michael Curry. But last summer Turner famously worked out with Hall of Fame coach and shooting guru, Herb Magee, of Philadelphia University.

Turner actually struggled on his midrange shooting game more during his second season than in his rookie year. On shots beyond 15 feet, Turner shot just 33 percent. He also seemed to struggle in back-to-back games, which could be related to his fitness.

But with the addition of Bynum, Turner will be able to focus more on shooting and scoring.
After all, Turner averaged 7.5 rebounds per game in the playoffs. With Bynum, he won?t be needed to rebound as much.

?I think Evan knows what opportunity is there for him,? Collins said. ?Just think about it -- last year Evan was our best rebounder. This year he could arguably be our third or fourth-best rebounder. That would be amazing because with the big guys on the boards you can get out more and go with it.

Analyzing the revamped Sixers: Evan Turner
September 1, 2012

Immediately after the season, we examined the performance of and provided an outlook for each member of the Sixers' roster. Since then, the team has been revamped. So as a result, we begin another player-by-player series on the new roster. On Saturday Evan Turner takes center stage.

Andrew Bynum is the new "it" (see story) but Turner could become the Sixer who steals the show in the 2012-13 season. Two years ago, Turner was the second-overall pick in the NBA draft. There are expectations that come with being selected so high, and to this point Turner's career has fallen shy of those.

However, with Andre Iguodala now a Denver Nugget, Turner's time to shine has arrived and I believe he will thrive. The soon to be 24-year-old is a fierce competitor and tremendous basketball talent. Turner is not a pure shooter, but he can create off the dribble and he backs down from no one.

Many felt Turner's struggles early in his career were associated with being too similar a player to Iguodala and therefore the two were incompatible on the court together.

Turner earned a spot in the starting lineup midway through last season at the shooting guard position. That will likely change this year. Turner will be a starter, but he is more suited to play the small forward spot, a position occupied by Iguodala in recent years.

Turner averaged 26 minutes a game during the 2011-12 season, scoring nine points and grabbing six rebounds on average. His field goal attempts will likely increase, but hopefully those attempts are mid-range jumpers. Turner shot 45 percent from the floor last year, but shot just 22 percent from three-point range. He should leave the long-range shooting to guys like Jason Richardson, Nick Young and Dorell Wright, a trio that for their careers combine to shoot 37 percent from behind the arc.

Turner has the ability to average double figure points and rebounds.

Entering his third season, Turner will have the ball in his hands often. With Lou Williams now a member of the Atlanta Hawks, Turner needs to use his creativity to get to the foul line. Williams was an 81 percent free throw shooter last season, and he shot a team-high 292 free throws. Iguodala was his nearest competitor with 196 free throw attempts. Turner shot just 67 percent at the charity stripe in his second NBA season, but that seems uncharacteristic given his 76 percent free throw shooting in his three years at Ohio State.
