Future Football Schedules (Updated 8/31/2024)

History in the making: Ohio State in talks with Army to play future contest

The Ohio State Buckeyes opened up their latest national championship campaign with a 34-17 victory over the Navy Midshipmen.

The next time the Buckeyes will face a service academy, though, won’t be until after the 2016 campaign.

Ohio State is currently in talks with the Army Black Knights to schedule a game at a future date.

Amazingly, these two programs have never met on the gridiron despite their long and illustrious histories.

While Army’s schedule remains flexible due to being an independent program, Ohio State will have to work around their conference schedule. Like Navy, Army will likely serve as a season-opening opponent. The first year both teams have an opening at the beginning of their schedules will be the 2017 campaign.

Army doesn’t have any current openings early in the season that coincide with Ohio State’s 2018 schedule.

The two sides also have openings at the start of the 2019 campaign.

Due to the size of Ohio State and the importance of home games for the Buckeyes’ athletic department, Army will almost certainly be a one- or two-game contract with the contests being played at Ohio Stadium.

Fitzgerald: Big Ten coaches voted unanimously against 9-game conference schedule

In 2016 the Big Ten will expand its conference schedule from eight games to nine in a league-wide effort to enhance the overall strength of schedule for the conference. Apparently this is being done without approval from the 14 Big Ten head coaches.

Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald says, per Stewart Mandel of FOX Sports, the coaches in the Big Ten were unanimous in voting for an eight-game conference schedule.

Pat Fitzgerald said Big Ten coaches voted 14-0 AGAINST going to nine league games. "But hey, we do what we're told."

This is certainly a reminder just who makes the big decisions in the Big Ten, and it sure is not the head coaches.

The Big Ten will also eliminate FCS opponents from the non-conference schedule across the conference.

Both are good imo. Biggest drawback is less home games.
Will probably go a lot of years with 6 at home? And most others 7?
Three OOC games (most of them home) and nine conference games (five home one year, four the next) leads to a minimum of six home games (when one OOC game is on the road/neutral and four home conference games) and a max of eight (all three OOC games at home and five home conference games).

Since 1990, here are the years with only six home games:
1990: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)
1992: Two OOC, four conf (12 regular season games)
1993: Two OOC, four conf (12 regular season games)
1994: Two OOC, four conf (12 regular season games)
1995: Two OOC, four conf (12 regular season games)
1996: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)
1998: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)
2000: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)
2001: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)
2004: Two OOC, four conf (11 regular season games only)

We've had a minimum of seven homes games every season since 2005 (nine home games in 2002).

When we have Texas, Notre Dame, and BC in the same year... do you think all of those will be at home?
Here's how it splits and why I say there will be some 6-game years.
Every other year the conference schedule will be 4 home / 5 away + 3 OOC games... best case scenario is 7 if every single OOC is at home. But given how we're scheduling, it's not unlikely that 1 of those will be the return for a home-and-away (since it appears we're aiming for 2 P5 opponents).

Edit... 2023 (first odd year that has all 3 OOC opponents lined up already)
Will only have 6 home games as it stands. Odd years only give 4 conference home games for Ohio State, plus hosting Texas and Notre Dame. At BC.

Ohio State nearly played Bo Pelini, Youngstown State in 2015

According to Scalzo, the Buckeyes had agreed to pay Youngstown State $750,000 for a game, but backed out in light of new Big Ten scheduling rules. Instead, the Penguins will play Pittsburgh to open the season, and will be paid $420,000. Ohio State will make up the difference to Youngstown State. The Youngstown State spokesman declined to comment as to why Ohio State did not play the scheduled game, and also did not know when the two schools originally agreed to play in 2015.

#YSU will make $420K for this year's Pitt game. Penguins had deal with Ohio State for $750K before B10 dropped FCS. OSU made up difference.
