Then, your telling me that the majority of society has the right to take the responsibility I have for my own actions out of my hands and place it in theirs?
They've always had that right. Ever driven down a deserted road in the middle of the night, and came to a stop sign for another deserted road? I have. I slowed down to about 20 from 55, and rolled right through it. I got a ticket for doing so.

To me, it's the same thing. Nobody got hurt. Nobody even had a chance of getting hurt. But society made laws telling everybody how to drive, at all times. Society has the right to tell us how to drive. How to drink. Where we can smoke. What we can smoke. How much health-care insurance we have to have. They've always had that right. Welcome to America.

Jesus Christ, pal, welcome to the real world. Do you think people had more "rights" living in (you pick one) medieval England, Mayan Yucatan, or Czarist Russia?

I suppose an argument could be made that there was no diminution of "rights" in the Stone Age - man had the full right to starve to death or die of cholera before age 15.

We remain the most free people on earth. Of course we need to remain vigilant against the erosion of those rights, including the right to be stupid and self-destructive. But again - we're the most free people on earth.

So we have no right to issue drivers licenses, set drinking and voting ages, make manufacturers put seat belts in cars, test elevators? That seems to me to be an argument to be made by anarchists.

Of course you didn't hear about this shit when it was just a few suburbanites and your occasional crack head getting fucked up beyond belief.
A repeat of previous history - check out Porgy and Bess, written in the 30s and with a strong statement about the affects of dope and alcohol on the poor that produced no real public concern until the sudden explosion of marijuana, hash, LSD on college campuses and suburban high schools in the 60s.

Bring a small handful of upper-middle class kids away at school into the equation and now you hear "We have to protect our children!!!"

Well yeah, nothing new there. Look at what Lewis Hines' photography did for child labor laws.

"Society" in this case are a few angry adults bitching to media outlets. Spotlight hungry, self-righteous politicians putting pressure on federal agencies.

Essentially a giant special interest group.

And on the other side are those who want to continue fighting a middle eastern war with money borrowed from China to the tune of 12 billion a month so they won't have to raise taxes on the top 1% money earners. That's society too. Special interest groups cut both ways.

I'm still legal.

Four Loko's must not have very good lobbyists. It's not like the beer companies are going to stand up and fight for Four Loko or any of its competitors. Sure, they'd love to sell a caffeinated alcoholic drink, but I'm willing to bet that's rather let Four Lokos and the like die then push the issue.

What happens if they drink the equivalent amount of alcohol in Four Lokos but fell like they'd still be OK to get behind the wheel of the car because the caffeine is masking some of the effects of the alcohol?

Then they'll probably end up in jail after being pulled over by one of the numerous cops that hover outside of bars.

What happens if you operate heavy machinery after taking over the counter cough medicine?

Anyways on a funnier note...

How Four Loko Destroys My Body: A Liveblog For Science

500x_fourlokowhy.jpg

Four Loko, the caffeinated alcoholic poison drink, has been in the news a lot lately. It's being banned in some states, forcing the manufacturer to strip out the caffeine. But what's it do to your body? Let's find out. Live updating

I'm going to be drinking a can of it right now, in the next hour or so, and liveblogging the results. In the course of it, I'm also going to be explaining why Four Loko is potentially dangerous, as well as how it feels to actually drink one. If you're over the age of 25, this is kind of your chance to experience it without having to hang out with college-age kids. Here we go.

1:14: I'm opening up the can. It's watermelon.
1:15: Smells like someone threw a bag of Jolly Ranchers into a Coors Lite.
1:16: The first hit stinks of booze, then has a very candy aftertaste.
1:17: I made sure to have Indian buffet for lunch, so that any potential vomit could be as disgusting as possible.
1:18: So why all the fuss? It's a pretty big-ass can, coupled with its high alcohol content (12% by volume), as well as having caffeine, sugar, guarana and taurine. The stuff that's in energy drinks. So this is an energy drink coupled with a social lubricant.
1:18: To be clear, I'm fairly sensitive to energy drinks, as evidenced by my liveblog of the Health potion. That was fun. And I'm not too huge of a drinker either.
1:21: The typos have already started.

Why do you refer back to my post? You make it seem as though I disagree with you. If you'll bother to check, you will notice what I said was in response to Buckeneye, and his disappointment that we are letting the the government do such things. Why didn't you jump all over Buckeneye about this? Why don't you jump on cincibuck about this? He too said that society has the right to control various aspects of our lives. I guess I have a more pragmatic outlook, and way of putting it, than cinci does, but I agree with what he said (this time :wink2: ). Get off my back, pal - or go on and on about something in the stone age, as it appears to be important to you. :tongue2:
