The term "sexual assault" is quite broad. From the from the woman's lack of pursuit of serious prosecution this doesn't sound like much. We're not talking rape here, most likely.

It would be better for Witt if the whole story came out. As it stands, it sounds pretty ugly.

..or this provides a way for her not to go through all the scrutiny of a public prosecution? Given that she's at Yale the chick more than likely has a bright future and would rather this not become something that defines her if at all possible. You could be right but I wouldn't read anything into the fact that this is the avenue taken.

That's a good point. It's certainly possible, and it's hard for me to put myself in her shoes. I would presume that if I were a woman who was sexually assaulted I would raise hell over it, but you never know.

You might want to go back and look at the way women have been treated who have accused other public figures. I remember instances going back to the Kennedy cousin (not a family generally known for endorsing celibacy) where the accuser's mental state, personal history, etc. were all fair game and widely dragged through the media.

The approach taken did succeed in getting out enough info so that the Rhodes people rethought Witt's candidacy, with the advantage of not exposing the woman to a national message board bashing.

You're presuming that her goal, after being raped (or whatever) was to prevent his Rhodes candidacy. I doubt that was the goal of an assaulted woman.

And I'm well aware of what has happened to other women who have accused public figures. That's why I said "you never know." My presumption is I would fight. But I haven't been put in that position.
