Former Tennessee Coach Derek Dooley (Unemployed)

Yeah, this is a complete "WTF?" hire. I would guess that they didn't want to touch Leach with his lawsuit (He's probably black balled from any major program), and they didn't have time to negotiate a contract with any other established coach.

IMO this hire is an over-reaction. At UT they knew they made a mistake hiring someone who didn't get their culture. So they made culture the only criterion. That's my impression, and in my opinion it's a mistake if that's what they did.

They should have consulted Andy Geiger. That man knew how to properly replace someone who doesn't get your culture. Ironically, the man he replaced knows Tennessee's culture pretty well.

Dooley understands the South, and was Saban's lead recruiter. Having the UT brand behind him, he could be successful.

There's some truth in this. Fulmer's downfall was that he eventually got so wide recruits could no longer see the UT brand behind him.

That thread title just makes me giggle.

He may turn out to be a very good hire but still....Derek Dooley.

Say it five times fast....

The Schadenfreude one gets from reading the Vol boards prior to Urban rising from the dead - the comments about how Kiffin ran him off and how the Gators were going down hill and lose all of our recruits - to today's Volquest posts where they are freaking out about the hire ( "Jesus - and to think we gave Aubies [censored] about the Chizik hire !!!) and predicting Vol irrelevancy for the next five years and continued Gator dominance is - uh - sweeeet. :banger:

Wow, he could turn out like his old man (and land a Hershel Walker) and have a great career, but with a record like that at a place like LaTech, wow it sure looks like pure desperation on the part of Tennessee.

Maybe they thought they needed a coach who was a lawyer to help them with all the left over baggage Kiffin left in his wake.

Cutcliff never really gave them the time of day. First, Martin would not allow him to pick his entire staff. Secondly, Cutcliff fucking hates Martin with a passion.
I am not questioning that its not true, but whats the story about the second portion? I heard the entire coaching staff issue on talk radio Friday, but not the second part.

He's a Fulmer loyalist and believes (rightly so) that Phil took the program to levels that the program had never been too. He loathed the way that Fulmer was pushed out and wasn't gonna come back unless he had total control.

Apparently that wasn't gonna happen.

General Neyland (173-31-12, .829) > Phil Fulmer

How so? In the 76 years the SEC has named a champion only Alabama (22) has won more championships than Tennessee (13) and they weren't clumped together in the final 30 years as were Florida's (8 + 1 forfeited)

Ala 22, Tenn 13, Ga 12, LSU 10, Fla 8 +/- 1

Maybe Dooley is a good coach and they'll be just fine, but this seems to me to be a rush to judgement. There can't be (m)any college jobs that offer better facilities, a 100K stadium, consistent national leader in attendance, a winning tradition, loyal alums who will travel outside/inside the South.

Seems to me that schools are surprised that certain coaches don't want to move -- Les Myles to Michigan, Bob Stoops to OSU, Mike Riley at the other OSU to USC (!!). And it also seems to me that most ADs get caught without an SOP new hire plan and thus rush to judgement. I'm thinking especially of Michigan, whose AD should have seen the retirement coming. Can one recruiting year be that important? I don't think there are more than a handful of kids in any program that are sold solely on the coach and not the school or the program. some of you who are closer to the recruiting scene -- enlighten me on this.

Your not going to hear about the second part on the radio or t.v. I work with Cutcliff's brother in-law and have had rather good talks with David. It is what it is! Martin is a prick...

I don't think so. The recruiting angle is largely overblown in the Tennessee scenario IMHO. Look at how slow and deliberate Andy Geiger was with the OSU search in January 2001. The 2001 class wasn't looking great (Tress added Gamble, Hall, and Nugent with only weeks to go) and the '03 class was a disaster.

Bucknuts 15-year recruiting history: Past Recruiting Classes

If the Coop/Tressel years have shown me anything, it's that you only need one 'great' class to make a run. The '99 class was rated #2 and was the backbone for '02, and the '02 class which was rated #2 was the backbone for '06. Texas had the top class in '02 (won in '05), LSU and Florida were both Top-4 in '03, and LSU was #2 in '04. Penn State's recent run was keyed by their '06 class, which reads like a who's-who of studs now.

According to Scout, Tennessee's 2005 class was #1, and the '07 class was #4. The '09 class Kiffin just signed was also Top-10. Tennessee has never had a talent problem; they have been outcoached and outschemed by better coaches for years. Time will tell if Dooley can stack up with the likes of Meyer, Richt, and Saban. If he fails, it won't be because the 2010 class was a washout.
