Probably the 1st question Day has to decide on is what position does he want to fill, I'l say he has at least 3 options:
1) hire a Co-Defensive Coordinator/Secondary Coach.
2) promote Larry Johnson to a Associate Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach or just make Greg Mattison the Defensive Coordinator and hire a Secondary Coach.
3) move Matt Barnes (currently Special Team’s Coordinator/Assistant Secondary Coach) to the Secondary Coach position and hire a Special Teams Coach.

Kerry Coombs is top priority for Ohio State
The Buckeyes had hoped to hang on to Jeff Hafley for at least one more season, but Friday night it officially found out the co-defensive coordinator was heading to Boston College to take over his own program. The timing for Ohio Sate isn’t ideal for a couple reasons, although Hafley will continue to coach through the College Football Playoff and an effort to replace him quickly and ease the concerns of defensive back recruits appears to be underway.
The top target for the Buckeyes: Kerry Coombs. The former Ohio State cornerbacks coach left the program to try his hand in the NFL, and he’s continued to have a positive impact with the Tennessee Titans. The option to return is almost certainly going to be up to Coombs, with Ohio State prepared to make a significant financial offer and already working behind the scenes to see if it’s possible for him to make recruiting calls while still with the Titans and while Hafley finishes out his duties in the postseason. There are other names in the mix at the NFL level, and Ohio State has had discussions about another former assistant returning with Chris Ash on the market. But Coombs is clearly at the top of the list for the Buckeyes.

Re: Reports of Coombs' leaving for the Titans surfaced on Jan. 24 and five days later Ohio State announced Coombs' departure from the program.
Coombs spent six years as a Buckeyes, serving as the team's cornerbacks coach and special teams coordinator. Ahead of the 2017 season, Coombs was promoted to assistant defensive coordinator. Over that time, Coombs helped to produce first-round NFL Draft picks Bradley Roby, Eli Apple, Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley. Denzel Ward is expected to add to that list in April's 2018 draft.
The former OSU assistant and Cincinnati high school head coach has never worked in the NFL before, but did work alongside Vrabel as a part of head coach Urban Meyer's staff from 2012-13.

My question is: Why exactly did he leave Ohio State in the first place?
Just sayin': The answer to that question might be a "clue" as to his desire or lack there of to return.
