Former DC Kerry Coombs (Former Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

Kerry Coombs is currently making $429,500.

Just sayin': I'm sure he will get some team performance bonuses (i.e. with Ohio State in the CFPs) and a bump in salary for 2017. In retrospect there probably was no way he was leaving for Cincinnati unless he was willing to take a significant pay cut to be a defensive coordinator.

Yeah I don't see Coombs akin to be a collegiate HC. He seems like a guy that is quite happy in a position/coordinator role. And let's be honest here, leaving the DB coaching position at OSU to be the DC in Cincy is lateral at best.

To Do List: Buckeye Cornerbacks Coach Kerry Coombs

KerryCoombsFives.jpg

Kerry Coombs' to-do list is full of talented possibilities.

Replacing a pair of starting cornerbacks is pretty much the easiest way to set your pass defense back a year or two, and while the Buckeyes weren't necessarily prepared for it, they have at least been preparing for it.

With Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore off to the NFL, the Buckeyes still return tri-starter Denzel Ward, who may have never started a game, but played as much as the two starters. Behind Ward are redshirt sophomore Damon Arnette, who was the nickel back a season ago, as well as redshirt sophomore Joshua Norwood, sophomore Rodjay Burns, and redshirt freshman Wayne Davis.

That's not the deepest group of corners, but reinforcements are already on the ground in early enrollees Jeffrey Okudah, Shaun Wade, and Marcus Williamson. Junior college transfer Kendall Sheffield will be along next month, and Amir Riep will arrive in the summer.

Clearly, there is a lot to work with and a lot to do. So what might cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs' to-do list look like?

1. Extend the carrot of playing time.

A year ago Kerry Coombs was talking about having a four-man rotation at cornerback, which nobody outside of the program really believed. Talk of this rotation continued from the spring and into fall camp. He was intent on doing it, provided Damon Arnette was ready for it. As it turned out, he wasn't quite where Coombs wanted him, and so the four-man rotation was reduced by one. The Ohio State coaches like to talk about testimony versus theory, and the cornerback rotation is no longer theory, it is now testimony. So while there will only be two starters, nobody in the cornerbacks room should drop their shoulders if they aren't on top. Coombs only needs to show them what happened with Denzel Ward working his way into a lineup with two future first-round NFL draft picks. There is room for more than just two cornerbacks, and more than just three, and that kind of incentive should drive everyone in that room to try and find a way into the rotation.

2. Get Shaun Wade and Jeffrey Okudah ready.

Kerry Coombs told Shaun Wade and Jeffrey Okudah to come to Ohio State ready to play. Or at least be ready to get ready, as no freshman is truly ready right out of the gate. With both players already on campus, they are here expecting to contribute, which means that Coombs is expected to get them to the point where they can help the defense this season. Losing two starters is never ideal, but if you have to lose them, you may as well sign the two best cornerbacks in the nation to ease the pain. Wade and Okudah are ultra-talented, and Urban Meyer will want to see that talent on the field in some capacity this season.

OHIO STATE CORNERBACKS COACH KERRY COOMBS PROBABLY DESERVES A RAISE

81231_h.jpg,qitok=dOvJ95K2.pagespeed.ce.cpjCKhoP7q.jpg

At the conclusion of Ohio State’s pro day last week, Buckeyes cornerbacks coach Kerry Coombs posted a photo on his personal Twitter account that featured three of his former players.

The photo had Coombs flanked to his right by Eli Apple and Gareon Conley with Marshon Lattimore standing on his left. Conley and Lattimore just finished their workout in front of nine NFL head coaches and over 120 pro personnel; Apple was back in town to watch two of his former teammates go through something he did just one year ago.

Apple, of course, was selected No. 10 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Lattimore and Conley might be joining him as first-round picks here shortly. If both do — and they’re both projected first-round picks — that would give Coombs three first-round corners in the last two seasons. Go back even further and add Bradley Roby and that would be four over the last four seasons.

Quick, someone photoshop Roby into that photo so Coombs can frame it and put it in his office. He’s building quite the resumé.

Re: It was Roby in 2014, Apple in 2016 and now, potentially, both Lattimore and Conley in 2017. That’s pretty much all Coombs has to say when he walks into the home of a cornerback prospect nowadays. The resumé speaks for itself.

http://www.elevenwarriors.com/ohio-...programs-in-common-era-with-three-first-round

Ohio State is officially an NFL factory — at least in terms of its secondary production from Kerry Coombs and Co.

The Buckeyes joined the 2002 Miami Hurricanes as the only two programs in the common draft era to have three defensive backs taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. On Thursday, cornerback Marshon Lattimore went 11th overall to New Orleans, Indianapolis took Malik Hooker 15th and Gareon Conley came off the board at No. 24 to Oakland.

Remember when guys were skeptical of Coach Coombs and were hoping he was assigned to special teams only?

If you don't remember...start at page 12.

Good times.
Yeah, its funny what fans(me included) think vs what the coaches know behind the scenes. I also remember when there was a contingency of people who didn't want LJsr to be on the OSU staff...

Also good times :pimp:

sidenote: love your avatar btw
