Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

What do you know

Think it has more to do with everything go on right now. (All speculation) Ohio State has no reason to go quiet on their hunt for a new DC. Going into the signing periods and post-bowl season without releasing names is indicative of talks surrounding Coombs. Up to this point, both the Buckeyes and Titans were/are still playing football. If I were a betting man, I would say that talks between Vrabel, Day, and Coombs happened weeks ago. No way we held onto that many recruits without giving them a name (likely Coombs). Additionally, Shaun Wade giving up a first round draft - albeit low - and the hanging onto Cam Martinez are also good signs.

Assuming we land Coach Coombs I wonder how the mechanics will work?

He was on the sideline for OSU. I think he’s on the sideline in TN. Assuming he’s coming to be co-DC with Mattison, I’d imagine one of them would need to go to the box. Hafley was the eyes in the sky this year while Mattison was on field and it worked very well.

I’m not sure I want Coombs up in the box though....that’s too much juice to take off the sideline. My assumption is Mattison moves into the box. Just a guess though....

I was wondering about this as well.

One thing that lurks in my mind, is once Coombs comes back, likely as Co-DC, it elevates him to HC level assuming performance is up to snuff, and I’d expect it to be good.

With Fickell likely to take a bigger job in near future, it will leave the Cincy job open. I would 100% expect there to be mutual interest between Cincy and Coombs the next time they need a HC. Which could be as early as next off-season.

This is where we need to open the check book and pay someone Venables level money.

In that scenario, the money still wont be enough to keep him if he wants UC job. Fickell is currently at $2.4M I believe

Many believe Marcus Freeman is next in line.
