Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

That's IF he wants to be a HC. Some guys (i.e. Venables, LJsr, etc) are fine with being great coordinators, and not having the full attention on them and just molding boys into men and collecting nice checks. Coomb's also isn't the youngest coach either. He's 58 now, say he leads OSU to success and gives Day the 2 year "promise", that would put him at 60. Idk of many programs wiling to give a first time 60yo HC a chance, it could happen. But Imo, Coombs wanted to move his career up the ladder(successful as a HS HC, moved from mid tier CFB to big time CFB with success, and then achieved success at the highest football level: NFL), he has reached the highest height with a team many assumed would be average at best, and did it with another Buckeye. I can see him coming back to OSU and remaining there until retirement, like I envision LJsr doing the same. Coombs can still visit family an hour and a half south in Cincy, and still recruit in base of the Queen City. Going back to OSU would be like going back home, and I'm sure Vrabel would understand. And it'd be a nice feather in his cap, win or lose next weekend that he can walk in homes, and tell kids at practice how he held the greatest QB of all time to 20-37 207yds, 0TDs and 1INT! Talk about being able to walk around with brass cojones

One thing that lurks in my mind, is once Coombs comes back, likely as Co-DC, it elevates him to HC level assuming performance is up to snuff, and I’d expect it to be good.

With Fickell likely to take a bigger job in near future, it will leave the Cincy job open. I would 100% expect there to be mutual interest between Cincy and Coombs the next time they need a HC. Which could be as early as next off-season.

Just really curious why we can’t announce him and let him keep coaching like happens with college coaches in the bowl games?

Knowing Coombs like I do I can say this is probably at his request. When he work he is 100% focused on his job and craft. He is committed to the Titans and wants to finish the job he’s being paid to do. he’s old school like that.

It's more than a little bizarre how so many assume it's a "done deal". It's been very quiet.
It actually hasn't been all that quiet. Pretty much everyone who's an OSU insider, has him pegged, and all of those guys don't agree often, but it seems as if it's almost a done deal. Its about as quiet as when Meyer was rumored to OSU as well...

It’s been silent in the sense that no other names have even come up, which is the main indication people are pointing to that this is close to being done.

even more reason to believe it's Coombs.... out of respect for him to finish his season out at TN.

You would have heard more names of other possible candidates pop up by now if they didn't have their guy already pegged and probably already sealed up.

Wade staying hints at this too. Cant see him staying without a high profile coming back to coach him

It seemed almost a done deal with Glenn Mason, Mike Bellotti, etc. in 2001 as well. Couple of weeks later, the words "Jim WHO?" were reverberating through Buckeye Nation.

Coombs may very well be the guy, but I prefer to wait until the formal announcement.

2001 is not comparable to how it is now, especially when it comes to media. Not a realistic comparison, go over almost all hires in NFL and CFB, and there was internet rumor smoke first, there is hardly any out of the blue hires nowadays. Not one. From Hairball, to Urban, to all of OSU's coordinators, heck Ryan Day was rumored before he got the job and he was pretty damn obscure as a coach.
You can wait all you want for a formal announcement, but in 2020, if there's this much interweb smoke, 9 times out of 10, its true

I guess we'll just have to wait a little longer. It'll be a glorious recruiting tool, that Coach Coombs shut down not only the GOAT- Tom Brady but also one of the most electrifying QBs in the NFL in Lamar Jackson
