Former DC Kerry Coombs (Cincy Bearcats Interim Head Coach)

There is no way in hell we have the 120th talent in the country in the secondary. No way in hell. Yet that is where we are. To quote a great football coach "You are what your record is", Mr. Parcells. We are 120th in the country in pass defense and that is fucking embarrassing.

We are 120th in the nation, and that can only be for two reasons, talent or scheme. I argue that it is not talent. Do we have maybe the 40th best talent, I would say at a bare minimum. Not 120th.
Or maybe they're 120th because Indiana, Penn State, Nebraska, Rutgers, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Clemson couldn't run a lick against them and had to pass damn near every play - because in their final game they played against a team with three Heisman Trophy worthy offensive players. Until the final match up, this team forced the other guy to give up on the run and go pass crazy. Add to it the fact that for the first time in 8 seasons there wasn't a Bosa or a Chase Young rushing the passer and the lone starter from last year's secondary had to play out of position in order to give the kids a chance to figure out what to do. At least two of them, Banks and Procter, looked damn good by season's end.

I don't think they'll get the spring practice they missed out on last year, either, and summer is still looking iffy as well from my vantage point, so apart from hopefully a more normal regular season I don't know how much improvement I'm really expecting to see. At best, I see it as having more time for the players to look at any scheme changes he wants to make on paper, but I don't see much opportunity to really work on it until much closer to, or even in the season.

I'm sure he's already bouncing off the walls trying to figure out how to right the ship.

I certainly don't doubt that at all, but does he (alone) have what it takes to right it? I do doubt that. We need someone younger, better in the areas that he's not, who's willing to work under him and maybe step in later. We can't get Hafley back (and maybe wouldn't want to, anyway), but having seen what he said in the very first press conference and then how he went out and got exactly the results he said he would, that's what we need to be seeking.

I agree to a certain extent. I'm not sure I like the notion of a co-DC. It appeared to work well last year with Hafley/Mattison. Did Mattison really have that much say or was he just a figurehead? Not sure there is a any value in adding someone else as co-DC if they won't add to the defensive game plan or in-game adjustments.

co/dc means two guys in charge of game plan ... one guy making the calls day of is my understanding...simplistically speaking

Some truth in that.. especially with Mattison helping out in the front 7.

If Mattison retires I'd like to see someone brought in for the secondary to help Kerry out.
well i mean Barnes is supposed to be doing that.. as officially safeties coach.. but in true office space fashion I’ve gotta ask “well what do you do here”

Sure but maybe someone should take over the DBs too while Coombs focuses on calling plays and helping each unit a little bit .
But Coombs' specialty is DBs! Its what he did so well here initially and why Vrabel took him to Tennessee. Idk of a DC in college that doesn't also run a position group. He should be able to handle both duties.

I guess I would like to know if he is responsible for the scheme that the defense runs during a specific game. I would assume that they change schemes from week to week depending upon the opponent. Also, I would be interested in knowing if he is responsible for in game schemes. Meaning is he the coach that would say rush 6 this play or back off and just rush 4. If he is not responsible for that I would like to know who is responsible.
