Beckman is really building a solid program at Illinois. I imagine that the Illibuck trophy is going to be hard-earned from now on. Additionally, I hope they knock Wisconsin out of any CCG we are unable to attend (here's looking at you to do it this year).
Way too early to say the Illinois program is going to be "solid."

I was at a Christmas party here and most of the posters on BP have higher expectations for Illinois football than they do..forever in Illinois football is a diversion till basketball starts just like Indiana. Little love for Beckman but they do covet Matta..him being from Illinois and all..

If he takes over at Illinois it could make for some interesting dynamics when we go against the Illini... Say what you want about this year's defense, the bottom line is that Heacock's defenses were pretty good the entire time he was here

Heacock's defenses were good at TOSU because we had elite talent most of the time. At Illinois it is going to take them time to even come close to the talent that he had at Ohio State, so he may have some decent defenses, but I think it will take a couple of years minimum for him to have anything close to resembling what his Ohio State defenses looked like.

His days as an Ohio State assistant coach are undoubtedly numbered (and it is a real small number now). He definitely has been an asset to the football program. Heacock was awarded the Frank Broyles National Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2007.

Jim Heacock arrived at Ohio State 16 years ago after eight seasons as the head coach at Illinois State, and he never thought about leaving.

"Anytime in your profession, you want to get to the top. And Ohio State is the top of the profession. When you're at Ohio State, how does it get much better?" Heacock asked this week. "It's a great football environment, the fans are second to none, we fill the stadium -- there are just so many positives, why would you be out looking to move?
Jim Heacock: "We work long hours, and you're over there seven days a week most of the time. So you get to know these guys pretty well, you know what they're thinking and doing. It's kind of a cliche, but it becomes like a family type situation."

Heacock: "It doesn't matter where you are in the coaching profession, it's hard on your families. You can't sugarcoat that. They don't see much of you, and you're scrutinized in the public eye. But the upside is our families have experienced so much, with going to bowl games and being around a competitive atmosphere and seeing and handling the adversity."

Heacock: "I think it's been an unbelievable run. I'm very proud of the accomplishments that the Buckeyes made while I've been here. Everyone was united. It was never an individual thing, it was, 'What can we do for the Buckeyes?' "

Heacock: "What I take the most pleasure from is all the defensive linemen and defensive players that I've coached and the relationships that you made with those players. Even in this situation, to have them call and see how you're doing, to say sorry, it's pretty special."

Ohio State football: Longtime assistants are looking for work
By Bill Rabinowitz
The Columbus Dispatch Wednesday January 4, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? They knew heading into the Gator Bowl that it would be their finale as Buckeyes coaches.

That Ohio State lost 24-17 to Florida in an uninspired performance stung Jim Heacock, Jim Bollman and Dick Tressel. They wanted to go out winners.

?We just didn?t get it done,? said Heacock, OSU?s defensive coordinator. ?I thought the players prepared very hard. I thought our guys were really ready to play before the game. We just didn?t get it done on all three sides ? offense, defense and kicking game.?

Now all three veteran coaches will be looking for new jobs as the Urban Meyer era at Ohio State begins without them.

?I?ve done a lot of communicating and talking to a lot of people,? Heacock said. ?I?m probably going to take a couple of days to regroup. I?d like to keep coaching. I love coaching football. I like dealing with players and seeing them grow. It just doesn?t seem the right time to say that I?m going to hang up coaching yet.?

Heacock was with the Buckeyes since 1996, hired by John Cooper as defensive line coach and retained and then promoted by Jim Tressel.

?Like I?ve said before, 16 years is pretty darn good,? Heacock said. ?I feel appreciative to have been here 16 years. I?m glad Tress kept me on after Coop. I?m really glad I had an opportunity to coach for those two guys. I think they are two outstanding people.?

Although Heacock?s unit was not up to OSU standards this season, he believes better days are ahead.

?I?m excited for the future of Ohio State football,? he said. ?I think they?re going to have an outstanding football team.?

Heacock ?relieved? to take break from grind of coaching
By Tim May

Former Ohio State assistant coach Jim Heacock, in his Dublin home, was not retained when Urban Meyer took over as coach.

On second thought, Jim Heacock is in the midst of a sabbatical from being a football coach, not a full-fledged retirement.

A coach for 41 years ? the past 16 at Ohio State, where he served seven years as defensive coordinator ? Heacock wasn?t retained when Urban Meyer took over as coach after the 2011 season. At the time, Heacock said he had decided to retire. Truth was, he now says, it was time for a break.

?I think I needed it,? he said.

Heacock always was a fan of the coaching grind, though last year he felt himself getting ground down. From the forced resignation of coach Jim Tressel to the lackluster season under coach Luke Fickell to the player suspensions, scrutiny and penalties that came with the NCAA investigation, a 6-7 season was not the swan song Heacock would have preferred.

?Sometimes you don?t get to pick those things,? he said. ?But after last year?s season and everything that was going on, I didn?t have the passion to search for another job, which would have meant moving and all that.

?That?s kind of why I decided to step back for at least this year. I?ve always felt that if you can?t get up at 4 a.m. and you can?t stay till late, and if you aren?t completely committed to it, then you?d better not do it.?

Heacock said he wasn?t bothered that Meyer?s plans did not include him; he knows that?s how things go in the business. In fact, ?I felt relieved a little,? he said.
