Bill Sheridan, former linebackers coach for the Miami Dolphins, has been hired by Ohio State for the upcoming season, a source tells The Lantern.

Sheridan will likely be taking the spot of Taver Johnson, former defensive backs coach. Johnson left to coach at Arkansas with former safeties coach Paul Haynes on Jan. 15.

Johnson's salary was set at $275,000, before he left to coach at Arkansas.

Jerry Emig, OSU athletic spokesman, said OSU has not made an official announcement yet.

"When we have something official to announce regarding personnel we will let you know, as is our protocol," Emig said in an email.

The addition of Sheridan marks the ninth personnel hire by coach Urban Meyer since he took over on Nov. 28.

Sheridan's coaching career began in 1981 in Shrine High School in Royal Oak, Michigan, where he was the football coach until 1984.[1] In 1987 he moved to the college level and became the linebacker coach for Maine, followed by Cincinnati and Army.[1] In 1996, was hired by West Point as the defensive backs coach.[1] He had been on Lloyd Carr’s staff at the University of Michigan the previous three years before his stint with the Giants, serving as both the linebackers coach and then as coach of the defensive line.

Prior to being the defensive coordinator he was the Giants linebackers coach. Sheridan replaced Steve Spagnuolo after he left to take the head coaching position with the St. Louis Rams. Sheridan had been the linebackers coach for the Giants for the previous four seasons after his hiring in 2005. Giants' head coach Tom Coughlin promoted Sheridan over secondary coach Peter Giunta. He was fired on January 4, 2010 after the Giants Defense slipped as the team dropped 8 of their last 11 games and allowed 40 points on five different occasions a franchise record.[2]

On January 19, 2010, Sheridan was hired by the Miami Dolphins to coach their inside linebackers.[2]

So, is this official then? I assume he'll be CB Coach? Seems like he's been mostly focused on LBs in the past.

I read the article already, but it was a surprise hire for sure because of his focus on LBs in the past. I guess we'll see when the official announcement is made.

As for it being official, I suppose BP will update the thread title when this is officially official.

I would assume he'll coach the LBs and withers will coach the dbs

did i miss something on Fickell? is he gone? 2 LB coaches makes no sense.... Keep in mind Tavers was a LB coach before he was CB coach at OSU.... so if this is the hire I wouldn't put it past him to coach CBs

Very nice resume, a tad light on DB coaching maybe, but with his experience across the defensive spectrum, I'm sure he's plenty knowledgeable there.

My first thought was about his recruiting energy though. He has spent a lot of time in the pros and has been out of the recruiting game for a while. We all know the emphasis UFM puts on his coaches to be top-flight recruiters, so Sheridan must have some chops there as well.

Welcome Coach (if the hire is true)

Tony Gerdeman from The Ozone has tweeted that Sheridan was scUM's recruiting coordinator for two seasons, and those classes finished 8th and 5th per Scout.
