Former Ass't Coach Bill Sheridan (official thread)

Bill Sheridan?s name surfaces in Tampa Bay

We have a new name in the mix for the defensive coordinator position in Tampa Bay: Bill Sheridan.

The Tampa Bay Times passed along a report from coachingsearch.com on Wednesday, saying that Sheridan was interviewing for the defensive coordinator job with the Buccaneers.

That report may raise eyebrows at Ohio State, where head coach Urban Meyer said just two weeks ago that Sheridan, whose title with the Buckeyes is defensive assistant, is a major part of his coaching staff.

?Bill Sheridan is a perfect fit for our program,? Meyer said. ?His experiences in the NFL are huge. He has Midwest roots and, most importantly, he wants to be an Ohio State Buckeye.?

But Sheridan may only want to be an Ohio State Buckeye if there?s not a better job available to him in the NFL. Sheridan was the Giants? defensive coordinator in 2009 and spent the last two years as the Dolphins? linebackers coach.

Bill Sherridan "Wait a minute! This is the program the gave my son nightmares and forced me to read him bed-time stories so he could sleep at night. Why am I joining them? I must bolt at once before I suffer the same fate as Nikki"

Kinda sad a guy can be hired on and then bolt a month later. Guess TB did us a favor if he is that easy to peace out on OSU and the kids he helped recruit.

I feel the same way. If you can land a DC position in the NFL, you can land one later. That was one of my favorite things about Joe Tiller at Purdue. He demanded a 3 year commitment...afterwards, you can do what you want. But you gotta give some kind of commitment to get on the staff in the first place. You can't just say "Yeah, I take this spot and as soon as it advances me, peace out, even if it is a week later." Personally, I don't want to see this thread in Alumni. No offense, but I want to see people who actually contributed to this university in that thread...like Malcom Jenkins, Krenzel, JT, etc...I think this should be in the general thread until then.

Sheridan took multiple steps down to take this job because he didn't have a DC offer. He has every right to take the job and would be foolish / arrogant to assume more offers are inevitable. He didn't exactly shine in New York.

Tiller cannot attract the caliber of coaches that Urban or Hoke can so he has to resort to those tactics.

Just like the temper tantrum he threw when Rich Rod stole Roundtree. Dantonio and Bielema did the same.

Then why take this offer? Just leverage the OSU DB offer to get another offer. Don't make some elusive commitment to us that you aren't going to back up and send us scrambling weeks later.

I understand you don't turn down a DC job in the NFL, but then again, I feel something on the Tiller standard (at least a 1 year commitment) should hold some weight. I don't see a basic, short term commitment as "tactics." I see it as a bare minimum ethical standard. I'm fine with a coach moving on after they have contributed, but I do not like signing up for a week or two until you can find better digs. Just me.
