Game Thread For the Natty vs Notre Dame, Jan. 20th, 7:30 ET on ESPN

Question:

Was JJ not getting targets a result of execution?

On Jeremiah Smith being limited to one catch and how Texas defended him: "When you look at it, it's a little bit more execution than it is anything else. ... We weren't able to sustain a few of those drives and connect on a couple plays. ... They're gonna mix it up, but ultimately, at the end of the day, we've gotta execute at a high level and continue to move the ball down the field. ... There's different ways for teams to adjust. ... To me, the story of this game for us on offense was self-inflicted wounds ... that's gonna be the focus this week."
Could be....they sometimes that's going to happen.

Or 2018 The Game vibes. That is to say, Ryan Day absolutely lights up a defense that relies too much on man coverage and blitzing.

It will be interesting to see if ND actually sticks with that. I imagine they’ll try to mix it up more than they usually do, and it’ll be a chess match to see if Ohio State can call (or get into) the right man or zone beater depending on what ND is doing on defense that play.

I thought OSU chucking it to Tate and Scott was an effective tool to counteract JJ being well covered. I expect ND to do similar coverage in the Natty.

I hope they do come up with some creative stuff against ND to open up JJ a little more.

I loved the screen! More of that if ND get's aggressive up front please!

Nah you gotta give Texas credit. They wouldn''t allow JJ to get unleashed and forced Ohio State to be patient - which is something Ohio State has struggled with and a lot of big play offenses tend to struggle with. But, as we saw, they overcame it.

Notre Dame doesn't have the horses to do any of that.

I tend to agree.
They will early but they’re a pretty banged up team. Get up on them early, force them to abandon their plan, and then tee off on them.

Force them to play our game. If we play their game just like TCUN games look out

Yeah, they are banged up on both the OL and DL. This could be brutal for ND if it turns out the way I suspect

Isn't their top corner who guarded MHJ also out too?

At this point, I dont care if ND has to play with all second stringers. Georgia certainly didn't care when they had to knock out MHJ to steal the natty from us.

Don't forget ND took out JSN and injured Hendo as well.

There is nothing really that Texas did that caused Smith to get only one catch. Ohio State just didn't execute. If it was that easy, Justin J and Jamar Chase wouldn't get 100 catches a year. The pass rush, the penalties, the bad throw Howard made to Smith all led to this.

JJ was also pretty open from a few replays I saw.

But I do think Texas had a much stronger pass rush that forced Howard to make quicker decisions and get rid of the ball faster. A lot of the throws designed to go to JJ are slower developing from his X spot. I don't think the coaches did much to adjust because he was an excellent decoy for Tate, EE and our TEs.
