Game Thread For the Natty vs ND, “One More, Then Forever”, Jan. 20th, 34-23 Buckeyes!

Normally I’d agree with your approach but that’s not been the recipe to beating OSU outside of last years Cotton bowl which obviously up front and at QB we were a mess for that game. ND sort of did that last year but again a worse OL than this year and a worse QB than this year.

I think blitzing heavy would be a mistake because someone will be open and I’d think they’d be open pretty quickly too.
Howard is one of the best QBs in the country against the blitz.

at no point did we come close to collapsing […] not even NIU
“Our OL didn’t collapse all year, even when we lost to NIU” is a fun take. I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, I just think it’s funny.
PSU was said to have the best DL in the nation and there were moments in the 2nd half with our backups that we mauled them
PSU had one of the best, along with Ohio State. Penn State also had a really stupid game plan where they took big risks in cover 1 man and got burnt.

Ohio State happens to be best at what Notre Dame is weakest against; sitting back in disguised zone and getting pressure with just the front four. See: the Rose Bowl performance.

That said, Ohio State came out against Texas with a much more aggressive game plan and got burnt a few times because of it.

If Knowles is aggressive again and gets burnt like Penn State did against Notre Dame, that is a self inflicted wound and I, along with many Buckeyes, will be really upset about that.

-all kinds of stunts along the front 7 to attack the OL. Especially the right side. It's OSU's weakest point in terms of physical ability.
-I'd target Howard with disguised coverages that confuse his first read and hope pressure gets home.
-I'd pull a page from tsun and Texas, lighten the box and force them, by headcount, to run between the tackles.

You have to mix and match and not be predictable of course but those are the "how's" (as far as my X & O knowledge goes) that give me as the ND coaches the best chance.

I'm looking for the same thing that we have seen many times in the past when teams make our offense score in 8+ plays instead of 4 or so. Holding calls, false starts, turn overs, sacks, Howard declines the throw and runs for a short gain. If this is is allowed to be a game of long possessions then it will be close late and then ND has the edge.
Well damn. How does OSU win now?? I’m off to the BWM thread to cry.

This post season, I am hoping that Day brings in some sort of analyst who can script some offensive game plan against teams who follow the defensive game plan that Nebraska, Scum and Texas implement that baits OSU into running and slow things down. I found myself agreeing with Klatt about that coverage being the most effective against OSU.

Day typically blames execution as the reason the offense gets bogged down, however, it seems to be something that he and Chip really don't have a good handle on, and in turn they seem to get lulled to sleep during that coverage. They are too smart to be "baited" into running their offense a certain way, yet it seems to happen every single time that they are defended that way.

OSU also made it harder on themselves with the penalties against Texas. Which can also be a by product of running a offensive scheme that just is not working to it's full potential.

Anyway, it's too late for anything to change fundamentally.

I agree with Klatt, I don't see ND getting on the board that much, so their best hope is to try to get a slow moving sludge match. I would love to say that can't happen, but we have seen it 3 times already just this season.
I think the best approach is to force OSU into 10+ play drives. The best way to do that is to take away the explosives and force OSU to take what is available underneath. The more plays, we have the more of a likelihood for something bad to happen such as turnovers, penalties, or a punt.

But if you come after OSU and you don’t get to the quarterback, it’s likely a big play getting behind you, which I think is not exactly what you want if you are trying to force OSU to earn it.

No way would I even say that S favors ND

How does this happen? How do people who are fans look at Caleb Downs and go “yeah give us the advantage there”.

It’s as amazing to me as politics where both sides think the other are equally as wrong.

As Zach Smith said today, they don’t even have the advantage at LB either along with S.

The better question is who starts from the Irish on this buckeye team?

seriously who?

maybe a guard or center or TE? I wouldn’t take either of their tackles over ours. They have a good TE but we have a deeper room. Maybe Kizer over Styles but Kizer has limitations.

I wouldn’t take any of their DL, wouldn’t take their LBs, wouldn’t take their secondary.

I know we bag on various fan bases but without a doubt there’s never been a more outrageous and ridiculous fan base compared to ND. I’ve never seen anyone like them frankly.

Btw ND has been playing their loses to us from the last 2 years. Good, reinforce how all you do is lose vs the buckeyes. You had your shot to avenge 2022 last year at home at night vs a very vulnerable buckeye team and you lost. What third times a charm? Give me a break this is the same team from 2022 and 2023 core wise and you’re rolling into the game banged up and playing freshman everywhere.

This ain’t UGA who doesn’t have a WR, a QB or secondary. This certainly ain’t Penn State who you can count on giving you the game.

Bucks 31 ND 13

Btw they literally gave us the advantage across the board in the trenches. That can’t be good.
