Florida State Cheating

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Two athletic department academic assistance employees have resigned and 23 Florida State University athletes were implicated in cheating on tests given over the Internet, school officials said Wednesday.

The athletes represent nine sports and 17 of the students are or have been on scholarship. Officials could not identify the students and could not say which sports are involved because of federal confidentiality restrictions.

Wow, this is a pretty huge story.

The investigation then found the learning specialist also typed papers for five students who apparently didn't qualify for that service and a tutor provided answers or other unethical assistance to 23 students for online tests. The testing involved a single course, which was not identified.

THis isn't "special tutoring" this is flat out doing their school work for them, it will be interesting to see how this plays out. FSU and Cryami have always had accusations like this following them in blogs and on bb's so it won't really hurt the image of the program in the public eye, however, it may be enough for the NCAA to step in and deny them from the post-season for a while.

Well, if you read the story, you'll see that FSU is going to set a real example. In fact, these student-athletes may be penalized, well, not necessarily, but they may be penalized.

Tough love can be tough!

Cheating is hardly something new. I was able to cheat back in school if I wanted to, but I figured it would only bite me in the ass in the end...

Here is more from the Tallahassee Democrat. Hundreds may be involved.

FSU athletes have NCAA woes
Nearly two dozen facing punishment

FSU athletes in trouble with NCAA Nearly two dozen Florida State student-athletes from seven varsity sports, including 15 scholarship athletes, face punishment by the university and the NCAA for academic misconduct. The athletes do not include any from men's basketball or baseball. No football players who have competed in games this season are involved. FSU President T.K. Wetherell sent the NCAA a letter via overnight mail Tuesday detailing the initial results of a six-month investigation conducted by the university's Office of Audit Services. In the letter to David Price, the NCAA's vice-president for enforcement services, Wetherell wrote that "approximately 130" student-athletes and "numerous" staff employees were interviewed as part of the investigation.

What troubles me even more is what is NOT said: No football players who have competed in games this season are involved.
This season? Wonder if it goes back to their MNC?
Alternatively - any football players involved are currently redshirted (or 2nd / 3rd on depth chart)?

Cheating on tests given over the Internet?

Shocker.

It'd be headline worthy if students weren't cheating over Internet tests.

The employees resigning tells me that it was along the lines of being organized for the kids...

Probably not a simple case of kids using their books or sharing multiple choice answers.

Important information, if true.

This brings "lack of institutional control" into the discussion. It doesn't necessarily prove it, without more details, but the subject is now on the table.

EDIT: Not doubting that grad was told this, just withholding judgement on the person doing the telling for the time being.

The university announced that Jimbo Fisher will succeed Bowden as HC; confirming speculation that he only accepted the OC position on the condition that he would get the head job when it became available. Rumors that I have contacted the FSU-AD insisting that I would have accepted the position if it meant getting that kind of job are unfounded.
