Deion Sanders hasn’t talked to Florida State about job he’s a rumored candidate for
It’s important to have goals in life. For instance, the only thing stopping you from being a Pro Football Hall of Fame running back is that you haven’t run for any yards. The only thing stopping me from becoming the next President of the United States is that no one has voted for me. On that same token, the only thing stopping Deion Sanders from becoming Florida State’s next head coach is the pesky fact that Florida State has yet to contact him.
That’s according to Sanders himself, who said the following on his own NFL Network show:
“I have not spoken to anyone from Florida State regarding this. But let me assure you, I am 100 percent — 100 percent — desiring to coach at the next level. And I will.”
It’s important to note that the quote was said on NFL Network’s airwaves and then quoted on NFL.com, because the original report of Sanders’s purported candidacy emerged from NFL Network. And no one else. The Tallahassee Democrat, speaking to and ostensibly on behalf of the athletics department, came out and knocked it down with both hands.
It’s also important to note that the Florida State job is open, meaning there’s no coaching norms for FSU to violate by actively shopping its position on the open market. AD David Coburn has said he plans to fill the position by the end of the month.
It’s also important to note that Deion is not a coach, meaning he doesn’t have to give a put-on-the-spot denial because he’s got a team to coach this weekend. This isn’t coaching doublespeak where Deion himself may not have talked to Florida State but his agent has. If Florida State wanted to hire Deion, they would have talked to Deion by now.
So, unless the man wearing a gold necklace with his nickname in gold letters on live television is lying to our faces, the only conclusion here is that Deion Sanders is not going to be Florida State’s next head coach. Which is a bummer.

Report: Florida State no longer considers Bob Stoops a candidate
It appears you can put this particular piece of drama to bed.
In the days after Willie Taggart was fired as Florida State’s head coach, Bob Stoops‘ name was connected to the opening through various levels of speculation. At one point, FSU’s athletic director, David Coburn, publicly stated that the current head coach and general manager of the XFL’s Dallas franchise is a candidate for the job; Stoops subsequently stated that “the rumors/reports of him being a candidate for the Florida State job opening are not accurate.”
Nearly two weeks later, and citing two sources familiar with the search, the Tallahassee Democrat is reporting that “Florida State has been in contact with representatives of former Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and does not consider him a candidate for its vacant football coach position.”
With the former Oklahoma coach out of the running — if he was even in the running in the first place — FSU could turn its attention to current FBS head coaches such as Memphis’ Mike Norvell, Penn State’s James Franklin and Iowa State’s Matt Campbell. Interim head coach Odell Haggins is also drawing support from current Seminole football players to take over the job permanently.
Coburn has long maintained that the university is on track to have a replacement in place before the end of November.

Re: James Franklin (47) — Two years ago Florida State expressed interest in Penn State head coach James Franklin. We're hearing there is also interest in Franklin this time around. Franklin has done an admirable job of building Vanderbilt into a contender and getting Penn State back to their winning ways. He has always kept a strong staff of recruiters around him and has had success finding talent in the state of Florida. Franklin has nine years of head coaching experience and was an offensive coordinator prior to that. Although he's winning at Penn State, some feel Franklin would listen if FSU came knocking.
Buyout: $1,000,000
I'm surprised Franklin has such a small buyout.

So many people think FSU should be such an easy place to win, based on the historic run that Bowden had where he spent 15 years in the top 5. There are conferences that haven't done that.
Less than one lifetime ago they were a women's college.
They STILL don't have their scholarships fully endowed.
I can't speak to now, but when I left Tallahassee in December of 2010, they STILL did not have an indoor practice facility (like Rutgers).
Their run was borne of their independent status and lucking into a guy who was a very good coach when he was young(ish).
They are not one of the programs with built in advantages that can expect success.

I think because they're one of the big 3 in FL that people think its easy to win at Free Shoes, and combine that with being in a terrible conference. FSU has 3 difficult games a year(Clemson, Miami and UF) and the rest are essentially games where a coach with a staff that can recruit can out talent most of the conference.
FSU is a rather easy school to get into, has a lackadaisical police force, and a fan base that is rabid and is willing to show up(more than they can say in Coral Gables). But a bad coaching hire after Fisher mailed it in for a few years set them back, and it'll take the right coach and staff to make them relevant again. This is the same issue that Texas is going through currently with Texas Tom

With none of the facilities, money, history...
There are several programs with wealthy boosters whose great-grandparents were wealthy boosters. FSU is not one of them. They haven’t been a co-ed school that long, much less relevant in college football.
Some FSU fans have told me that the above fact doesn’t matter. I have asked why else they have no indoor facility and their scholarships aren’t fully endowed. The reactions to that range from eye-rolls to the polemical last resort of Homo Rednekus, “Yew don’t know wut the fuk yer talkin’ bout”.
They are more geographically isolated than the cultists of rural Pennsylvania, almost as culturally diseased, and at least as delusional.
