Florida State Seminoles (official thread)

Robbery. Gun charges. Raising fighting pit bulls. Slapping women around.

Man, there is nothing too bad that can happen to this guy.
I really really really want to see the 'or else' part of the equation.....

No reason to believe that the president is not sincere about this. The question is, given how dysfunctional the power dynamics of that university are, will the powers that be back him in a power struggle with the foosball coach? The last Prez was so disgusted with the place that he found bailing out and dealing with the cult preferable to trying to reform FSU.

But wait, there's more!!!

...

According to records from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement obtained by the Sentinel, Cook was arrested as a juvenile and charged with robbery in 2009. Prosecutors later opted to drop the case. Cook was also arrested and charged with firing a weapon and possessing a weapon at an event on school property in 2010, according to FDLE records. The third-degree felony charge was later dropped or abandoned.

Robbery charges and gun charges before he even got to college? … Hey, you want a scholarship?

Seriously, would a regular student with such a questionable criminal background even be considered for admission to FSU?

...
You may be surprised. Standards are actually pretty low at FSU.

Again, I just can't get past how far from the mark this idea is.

Problem: The football team has somehow developed the idea that it's ok to rape and beat women after a good night of drinking
Solution: Keep them away from women and drink

You have to be some special kind of huckleberry to make that particular leap of logic, like a grown man named Jimbo kind of huckleberry

Same thing as US Military in Japan.
Have a problem of Marines and Sailors raping women... require that in order to leave base the peons have to come and go in a group of at least 2 and be back by midnight with the same group.
Just ignore that most of those rapes were gang rapes (so making people form a group was surely a deterrent!) and almost all of them involved an NCO (not subject to these policies), and the only incidents while I was there involved Commissioned Officers.

If the local Japanese law enforcement had actively refused to investigate U.S. military personnel then it would actually have been as bad as Tallahassee.

Scary(scarier) when you think of it like that isn't it?

When most of these rapes occurred (in the 90s), the SOFA treaty was such that they were largely precluded from investigating and prosecuting. It was a big deal locally b/c they had to request the US Military to give up servicemembers for prosecution... and of course US Military would just relocate them to the States instead of cooperating. This has some noticeable differences from FSU... but I think the general theme of violence against women going unprosecuted b/c authorities are protecting them is comparable. As is the "proactive" focus on bans as a means of correction instead of directly addressing the problem (in US Military it was eventually addressed imo -- next paragraph)

The situation has changed since (due to the civilian outrage) - not sure if it's a Policy change or Treaty change, but now US Military actively cooperates with local enforcement and will hand servicemembers over. Two Corporals got arrested for stealing car parts and reselling them in my time; plus plenty of minor stuff like traffic tickets ($800 for speeding over there).

The look Jimbo gets when he asks one of his athletes to get back in line:

So, rather than just recruit decent human beings while booting the rogues off the team, FSU is going to create an entire class to edumacate their foosball players on how to act like a decent human being. I wonder how many credits they'll get. He's also creating a special "compliance department" to monitor their behavior--cue fixer jokes. What stunningly good uses for higher education funds!

Wonder if the final will be conducted in a bar. If you go the whole night without smacking anyone, you get an A. In turn, the team's GPA will rise, no one will be ineligible for the playoffs, and TPD can go back to handing out parking tickets. It's a win-win for everyone.

Let me guess... Monk Bonasorte and Tim Jansen are heavily involved in one or both of those?

Also amusing...
