Anzalone receives special invite
Reading Eagle

Alex Anzalone got a very special offer Sunday: to participate in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January in San Antonio, Texas.

The game is a showcase for the nation's elite players.

"That was pretty exciting," Anzalone said of the invite. "I didn't think I'd get invited this early."

Doesn't appear there is a lot of excitement in our recruitment for this kid by people on most boards, which is surprising. After watching his film I've honestly formed the opinion that he is among the top 3 LB's in the country. He's the total package. Kid plays with bad intentions, has killer instincts, has great change of direction when playing both the run/pass, hits like a mack truck, and is extremely decisive. He is definitely one of the players I'm hoping to land most in S&G.

I think people are pretty excited after having seen his film. Have to like OSU's odds here.

This guy is just a pure football player. Offense and defense, he stands out as an athletic, tough, and ferocious football player. I think he'd be a homerun get for us.

I know he's listed as a LBer, but I wonder if Coach Meyer is licking his chops about the prospects of this kid on offense? Watching his highlights, he had some great catches and runs. Showed exceptional power and pretty good speed with some shifty moves to boot. Very surprising to see a kid that big be that athletic.

That's the big thing here, there doesn't seem to be a lot of buzz about favorites with Anzalone.

But if you say you like the odds,

Definitely excited, he's probably #2 on my list, maybe #1. Smith is by far the best athlete but having seen him play he has some things he really needs to work on on that side of the ball. His upside is ridiculous though and possibly higher than Shazier's.

You saw the picture next to Urban, Anzalone has tremendous size and certainly can move. Only seen highlights but he looks tough and seems to read plays well. Could be a tremendous H-Back as well. Would be thrilled to get him and his national rankings seem to be very low for the talent he looks to have.

He did name tOSU as his favorite about a month back. His dad is a Florida alum, but he grew up watching those Urban Meyer teams down at UF. He loves Urban Meyer too. I'm sure I have less info as wade, but on the cusp it seems as if tOSU could be really tough to beat here. This kid's game is so advanced for a high school linebacker too...really fluid in pass coverage, which you sometimes don't see in a high schooler's highlight tapes. Absolutely loved his film.

For gunners, his ranking should skyrocket once the new rankings come out. He began to blow up right when rivals made their initial top 100.

Florida's lack of a known offensive style makes us a question mark for that legacy. OTOH, Corch is a known quantity. I do not think we have a chance at him, unless it is a late pull after a successful 2012 using the Truckdriver U offense.

Are you guys looking at him on offense? I got the impression that, although it is somewhat uncertain where he projects, most like him best as a LB.

Wyomissing junior can pick from the best of the best college programs

Wyomissing junior Alex Anzalone

Alex Anzalone was amazed last month when he began getting scholarship offers from the top college football programs in the nation and got a chance to speak to coaches such as Nick Saban and Urban Meyer.

Now, after seeing a new offer practically every day - Monday he got his 31st, from Colorado - Wyomissing's All-State linebacker is getting used to being regarded as one of the top prospects in the nation.

Over the past five weeks he has heard from almost every top program, but one really stuck out above the others: the University of Southern California.

"All of the schools (that have offered) are really good, but the USC offer really struck me pretty hard," said the 6-3, 220-pound junior. "When you think of USC, you think of top-notch football, the best players in the country."

Ten weeks ago Alabama's Saban, Ohio State's Meyer and USC's Lane Kiffin had never heard of Alex Anzalone, much less of Wyomissing.

That's what makes his meteoric rise to national prominence so impressive. In a matter of a few weeks his name traveled throughout the recruiting circuit; once coaches saw his combination of size, speed, agility and athleticism - to go along with intangibles, such as being a strong student - they couldn't offer him fast enough.

Ross Tucker, co-founder and CEO of gobigrecruiting.com, calls Anzalone's sudden rise to four-star prospect status "remarkable."

Players who reach this level are generally considered blue-chip prospects by the time they are freshmen or sophomores, said Tucker. For one to emerge this late, and this fast, is rare.

"He quite literally can go (to play) anywhere he wants in the country," said Tucker, a Wyomissing native and former NFL lineman.

Indeed, there aren't many top schools that haven't offered. Those that have include Florida, Georgia, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Stanford.

Anzalone said his wish list of possible suitors is now empty. They have all emerged. Now it's a matter of hitting the road, doing research and narrowing the list.

He and his family will travel to Michigan this week. Next week they'll visit Florida and Florida State. The following week it's off to South Bend, Ind., to visit the home of the Fighting Irish.

A return trip is scheduled for Ohio State later this month. He'll utilize spring break in April to take a West Coast swing for possible visits to Stanford, USC and UCLA. He's been told another offer awaits him in Westwood.
