Wyomissing junior Alex Anzalone
Alex Anzalone was amazed last month when he began getting scholarship offers from the top college football programs in the nation and got a chance to speak to coaches such as Nick Saban and Urban Meyer.
Now, after seeing a new offer practically every day - Monday he got his 31st, from Colorado - Wyomissing's All-State linebacker is getting used to being regarded as one of the top prospects in the nation.
Over the past five weeks he has heard from almost every top program, but one really stuck out above the others: the University of Southern California.
"All of the schools (that have offered) are really good, but the USC offer really struck me pretty hard," said the 6-3, 220-pound junior. "When you think of USC, you think of top-notch football, the best players in the country."
Ten weeks ago Alabama's Saban, Ohio State's Meyer and USC's Lane Kiffin had never heard of Alex Anzalone, much less of Wyomissing.
That's what makes his meteoric rise to national prominence so impressive. In a matter of a few weeks his name traveled throughout the recruiting circuit; once coaches saw his combination of size, speed, agility and athleticism - to go along with intangibles, such as being a strong student - they couldn't offer him fast enough.
Ross Tucker, co-founder and CEO of gobigrecruiting.com, calls Anzalone's sudden rise to four-star prospect status "remarkable."
Players who reach this level are generally considered blue-chip prospects by the time they are freshmen or sophomores, said Tucker. For one to emerge this late, and this fast, is rare.
"He quite literally can go (to play) anywhere he wants in the country," said Tucker, a Wyomissing native and former NFL lineman.
Indeed, there aren't many top schools that haven't offered. Those that have include Florida, Georgia, Penn State, Michigan, Notre Dame and Stanford.
Anzalone said his wish list of possible suitors is now empty. They have all emerged. Now it's a matter of hitting the road, doing research and narrowing the list.
He and his family will travel to Michigan this week. Next week they'll visit Florida and Florida State. The following week it's off to South Bend, Ind., to visit the home of the Fighting Irish.
A return trip is scheduled for Ohio State later this month. He'll utilize spring break in April to take a West Coast swing for possible visits to Stanford, USC and UCLA. He's been told another offer awaits him in Westwood.
