Florida LB Alex Anzalone (official thread)

Stanford tried to (secretary of) state its case with Anzalone

Alex Anzalone and his mother Judy, left, met former secretary of state Condoleeza Rice at Stanford this month.

Alex Anzalone enjoyed his sudden rise to fame in the high school football world and his chance to meet top coaches across the country.

He ended his whirlwind recruiting campaign last week when he announced his decision to attend Ohio State. He was accepted into the honors college and plans to get his MBA during his stay in Columbus.

As one of the hottest recruits in the country, Anzalone, a junior at Wyomissing, had colleges pull out the big guns when he showed up on campus.

None bigger, of course, than former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, a Stanford alum who took the time to meet Alex during his trip west this month.

Rice, a big football fan who teaches at Stanford, apparently wasn't enough to sway Anzalone, who had the Cardinal on his short list but not at the very top.

Maybe if Stanford was really serious about snaring Anzalone's talents it would have pulled out Tiger Woods.

Probably wouldn't have made a difference, but it would have made for a neat photo op.

This is offtopic, but can anyone explain why Anzalone meeting with Ms. Rice is not an NCAA violation... yet Iowa was cited for introducing its recruits to Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore last year?

I'm sure there is a situational distinction... right?

I think it has something to do with the NCAA rule

BS-10e23sp-666-N: The Big Ten and all schools comprised within shall be hosed on any given occasion. Furthermore The Big Ten will be able to view how this rule will not apply to any other school that might be considered competitive or in direct competition with the Big Ten Conference.

I would assume it has something to do with the fact that Condeleezza is now faculty at Stanford. Just the same, I would assume that Alex could meet any member of the faculty at Ohio State.

Believe it's the fact that the coaches sought out those individuals to meet the recruits and Condoleeza being faculty as mentioned before. Archie can go and "recruit" for Ohio State as evidenced by the video with him and Gene Smith and countless other things.

Anzalone met Lauranaitis at a practice and got a picture with him, don't think it's a violation if they just "bump" into each other but if the coaches or Lauranaitis set it up then it is.
