Florida +10.5 at tOSU (ov/un 136.5) Tue 8 ET, ESPN2 (don't merge)

Great win and a game in which both teams showed flashes of March potential. The Bucks have some serious things to work on, though:

First, we lost the battle on the boards and kind of badly - 34-25. Sully looked very tentative after he picked up his third foul, and disappeared from the game at that point.

Second, as we already knew, we lack a three point shooter. 4-15 from three is abysmal (5 of 14 against WSU, btw), and there's no real go-to guy who you know will knock down the open shot. The number of attempts is also low; Diebs often took that many by himself.

This game was won with defense and at the free throw line. Ohio State had fewer fouls by four, won the turnover battle (steals also), held Florida to a lower shooting %, and hit just shy of 80% from the line. Those are all signs of a well-coached and experienced team...and a typical Thad Matta team.

Having said that, I feel a lot more confident about the Duke game after tonight. Thad's got a few more games to work out some issues on defense (Thomas), and put in some plays to get Sully open shots behind the arc. :tongue2:

was at the game...observations:

i remember us having trouble with the pick and roll at the top of the key last year, especially when it was diebler who was supposed to switch and we had problems with it again tonight...
Well-executed p&r is nearly impossible to defend, and Florida executed to perfection. Donavan is a heck of a good coach.

beal is a stud...i think he will be the best freshman in the ncaa at the end of the year... very athletic and has a great all around game...
+1. Very impressed with Beal, though I'd be a little cautious about "best freshman." I still think guys like Cody Zeller and Anthony Davis will have something to say about that. But Beal's game is remarkably well-rounded for a frosh - very mature for his years.

i was not happy seeing craft trying to dribble between 2 defenders with no help...
Disagree here. I think Craft breaking the press with the bounce was absolutely the right thing to do. I don't recall his turning it over in these circumstances.

bad and good having an tough opponent second game with so many new faces and roles this year ...great win for the buckeyes
I really don't see anything bad about it. Games like this and the upcoming Duke contest will make us better by the end of the season.

Good comments!

Watching this game last night made me appreciate just how great the Buckeyes were last year. How on earth did that team ever lose a game. LOL!

Just a few thoughts:

I love Craft. He's the glue and the motor and a true difference maker. But since he is not a real threat to shoot from outside, he really needs a back court mate at the 2 guard that can light it up and we just don't seem to have that guy (or really anything close)

Buford forced a lot last night. He obviously knows that there aren't a lot of other scoring options on this team so he's trying to do a little much right now. He's such a great shooter though even his bad shots are a better option than other guys "good" shots. :)

We really need another slasher player who can come in and ignite this team. Other than Craft, I didn't see anyone driving and make plays. I see Thompson and Scott as guys with this ability, but clearly Matta doesn't trust them enough yet to earn the real PT.

Matta understandably went with a shorter line up since he was facing a top ten team in only the second game. He'll work the young guys in during games against weaker opponents to get them some experience. That will sort out who will play more or less this year.

I think Lenzelle Smith deserves a lot of credit, especially for his defensive presence. He and Craft may be the best guard defending duo in the nation.
