Game Thread FIESTA BOWL: tOSU 21, Texas 24 (01-05-09)

my keys to the game:
texas offense
1. dominate the los - our dline has gotten better as the year progressed. but the pounding delivered by USC had nothing to do with the flash players at lb, cb, or safety. it was because their oline manhandled our dline. if our dline can fight to a draw with your oline we have more than enough talent to hold our own defensively.
2. attack the safeties - we have imo the best 3 man cb grouping in college football. im sure you know about jenkins, but imo checkwa and washington are just as good albeit not as physical. russell and coleman have both progressed nicely over the year at safety. but imo russell isn't back to where he was before he blew out his acl. coleman is still on the young side and can be taken advantage of. thats who i would pick on in the passing game if i could get favorable matchup.
texas d
1. orakpo and ? - the guy is a freak of nature but by himself against pryor it won't be enough. maybe in week 3 or 4. but not at this stage, pryor is too comfortable in the pocket at this point. he's going to need someone on the other side or up the middle to give a solid push. if that happens, pryor will have serious problems.
2. stack the box, and if its a pass blitz. pryor is a true freshman, brewster is a true freshman, and browning is a red shirt so. who has struggled against dominant dlinemen. id put orakpo on browning, cheat up the cb's and bring heat every snap.
tOSU offense
1. consistency - it all starts up front. the oline must play consistent which is something it has not done all year. youth has been the biggest issue but the extra practice time will hopefully address a lot of the issues.
2. posey/small/thomas - one of these three guys needs to step up and firmly entrench themselves in the 3 wr set. robo is an excellent 2nd receiver and hartline imo is a perfect fit for the slot. we need a holmes/ginn type that forces a d to account for him on every play. right now the brian twins are respected, but noone fears them. we need a guy that forces d's to say, "ok wheres #". the running game with beanie and boom won't have an issue so long as the passing game pulls its own weight.
tOSU d
1. pressure - the dline has to have their game of the year. with the continual progression throughout the year this seems like it could be the game it happens. but if they get pushed around like they did against usc texas will dominate.
2. heacock has to be aggressive. we can't sit back and give colt easy throws. personally id like to see jl matched up with colt the same way we used to do the big kat and mobile qbs. as soon as he shows it isn't a run revert to lb 101, see ball get ball. not sure anyone is more deserving of the heisman. but win or loose, we have to hit colt early and often. if his jersey isn't a dry cleaners worst nightmare by the end of the game the scoreboard might be mine.

alot of people have mentioned the similarities to the 05 matchup. honestly i don't see it. i think both offenses are better now than they were at that point of the year and i question whether either d is as good as they were in 05. but as in 05, i believe the more physical team will win. on paper texas to me is a 10 point favorite. but if tOSU brings the noise the way they did against scum... all bets are off.

edit: ive written up a similar post leading up to our last two bowl games but didn't actually post them. ill be damned if i make that mistake a 3rd time. gotta get rid of the bad joo joo.

if there is one thing that I am 100% confident about its that Texas will get pressure on Pryor and it will almost certainly be with the front 4. in obvious passing situations Texas will put Sergio Kindle oposite of Orakpo and the two have proven to be the best DE combo in the nation. The key to the texas defense, in confrence this year, has been the ability to put pressure on the QB with just the front four.

for some refrence here are the Texas front 4 stats against OU, Mizzou, OkSt, and Tech

Against oklahoma alone the front 4 accounted for all 3 sacks and 5 of the 7 hurries. this comming against " the best pass blocking line in the country" (if you listen to ESPN)

Against MIzzou the front 4 had 1 of the two sacks and 8 of the 9 hurries

Against okie st they had all 5 sacks recorded(i believe to that point okst had only given up 3 sacks all year) and 7 of the 8 hurries

Against Tech they had both sacks and 13 of the 15 hurries.

some of those stats are inflated by the amount that the teams actually throw the ball; however, i believe that they accurately illustrate how active the texas front 4 actually is

For some reason I see this turning out to be like the PSU game. I really hope it doesn't. The last thing we need is another bowl loss.

OH!
If this is like the PSU game then you are talking about a very tight, defensively oriented game.

The main thing that went wrong against PSU was giving up the ball in field position favorable to PSU - following which the game winning TD (and only TD of the night) was scored. While all recall the fumble, it is not always recalled that OSU was driving reasonably well at that time.

Pryor is now more mature and game ready than he was against PSU. Avoiding the fumble in your "like the PSU game" model would then lead to a win for the Buckeyes.

My prediction: Texas scores more than one (1) touchdown!

You heard it here first!

well, as a buckeye fan im not "100%" sure that will happen. we have a pretty talented offensive line and im really hoping the can put it together. but id be willing to wager orakpo and the gang will more than make their presence known. i fear they will be able to do as you suggest. should that happen... well, im really hoping that will not happen .

should have know better than to use the "100%", but lets just say that in obvious passing situations Texas gets a very substantial pass rush out of their front four. That said play action, throwing on 1st down, and third and short situations will slow them down. I know that sounds like football 101 but it is very true against this texas defense.

This may very well be like #1 tOSU vs #2 tsun, and be a very high score game. I know we have a great defense but we had a great defense during that game...

Or it could be like the Purdue game in 2002...

You never know what is going to happen in a game like this, it's college football.

It would be great if McCoy wins Heisman. He had an excellent season. Team leader in rushing yards for a QB with such good passing numbers and a #3 ranked team is pretty good. That says a lot about his O Line. Also, He will be busy living it up. Miss some practices. Look rusty in Fiesta Bowl. That's stretching it a bit, but...I'll take all the help we can get.

Colt's idea of living it up is driving through a pasture in a beat-up truck and shooting at opposums. He should be ready to go.

IMO, Orakpo by himself can take over the game and can effect Pryor. However, in saying that If pryor is quick with his decisions and is decisive when he runs the ball then this can negate Orakpo. Remember, Pryor is a freshman and while he's played some 12 games I'm not ready to say that Texas has to play like giants to take down pryor and our offense. I think Texas to be honest mearly just has to play a clean sound game on defense. Meaning No penalties, as well as no busted plays. If they can force OSU (which they certainly can) to go 60+ yards in 8-12 plays on every drive they have a good shot at winning. If we score from 60 yards out in 4-5 plays then Texas could have a problem, but with that offense they have they can answer back just as fast if we're not ready.

NCAA Team Passing Defense rank 109. Texas Can that be right?
Texas has one of the worse pass defenses in all of college football?

Well I think thats scewed by....

A) The great passing teams in the big 12

B) Teams not being able to run the ball on their defense so they have to pass.

C) To a minor degree having freshman safties
