Game Thread Fiesta Bowl 2016 - tOSU vs Notre Dame, Friday 1/1 @ 1pET, ESPN

True freshman Laurenitus wasn't quite on par with Sr Bobby Carpenter

I recall a significant change in the way the defense used him but maybe I'm mis-remembering.
No, you remember correctly. There was a bit of a loss, if for no other reason than Carpenter, Hawk and Schlegel played together for two seasons. But it didn't take very far into that Michigan game for Laurenitius to get his first sack of a Wolverine QB. Yummy.

Animal didn't play that rush LB spot Bobby manned at points in the season. Hell of a thing because we gave a ton of 33 looks that year and Carpenter was a big reason.

Sounds good to me. I admit, I'm nervous about what Cook can do.
You shouldn't be. Cook is really hot and cold. I'd be more worried about Scott, he has moves similar to Zeke last year. This is a great matchup for the tide. Oklahoma or Clemson would have put up some points on you, but MSU plays right into that Bama defense. Pocket passer with almost zero mobility that can hold onto the ball too long. Just keep run blitzing and they won't score much. End of the 3rd will be 7-10 with either team ahead, but you'll give the ball to Henry almost 40 times to wear them down and blow the doors off in the 4th quarter.

What is the number of potential draft picks (this year) for OSU and for ND?
If they all go, 12 for OSU, with 4-6 first round picks.

1st (rd, maybe overall) Bosa (will declare)
1st Elliott (already declared)
1st Washington
1st Decker
1-2 Thomas (will declare)
1-3 Lee (wants to declare, will the draft grade agree? 2 yrs left)
2-3 Bell (will declare)
2-4 Perry
2-4 Apple (2 yrs left, unclear what he'll do)
2-5 Elflein (could return)
4-7 Jones (someone will take a flyer on that much arm talent)
??? Miller

Fringe guys:
WR Marshall - should return w/ 2 yrs left, late rd pick, would be top WR next year, but mass exodus might push him out
P Johnston - older guy from australia, could decide to get started in league. Not a high draft commodity if he's one at all

Lee: Hasn't he been banged up a good amount of the season? Talk before the season was that he was surely gone after this season. He could still certainly go, but he could certainly help himself out by returning and playing another year fully healthy.

Apple: I'd be a little surprised if he left, but then again I was surprised when Derek Ross left in 2001.

Elflein: He's one that I think just may go and I think it could wind up hurting the most. It just seems like such a perfect storm for him to slide to Center, when there appears to be enough up-and-coming depth to replace the other starters.

Jones: The combine/pro days will be key for his draft stock. I've heard from others (I don't dig deep in the NFL draft anymore) that QB is relatively weak? A great combine could vault him. He certainly has the size and arm the NFL covets. Plus after the Sparty game, I don't think OSU fans were the only ones to say, "Hey, maybe it wasn't a QB problem..."

Miller: Again, I don't get into the NFL draft like I used to, but I doubt a player with Braxton's athletic and play making ability lasts beyond the 4th round. Just seems like too good of a gamble that once he polishes off being a WR, he'll be a great deep threat.

Marshall: I sure hope he doesn't go. Of all the potential early departures, he needs to stay the most. He still has issues securing passes he should easily catch. Another year, while being "the guy", learning the position will do him wonders.

Johnston: Probably depends on if any NFL teams actually need a Punter. I'd think teams would be interested if the have the need. He's got a good leg and is great at pinning it inside the 10.

That's a lot of guys who will be trying to protect themselves from injury during the bowl game.

I was more worried about that before the pairings than I am now.

ND is a good opponent for OSU because now it's two teams who fell short of the playoffs and have a bunch of guys leaving for the draft.

It will come down to which coach can get his team together better. I'll take my chances with Urban.
