Field conditions at Ohio Stadium

It stood out a lot to me watching it on TV. Everytime someone was tackled, a lot of dirt/grass would fly up and it would look like someone used a big pideon wedge in the area. I was at the NIU game as well, and the field just looked, for lack of a better word, dull.

Is that similiar to a pitching wedge:biggrin:

I haven't seen the broadcast but this might explain what most of you are describing...???

That looks good compared to some of the aerial shots. It really looked like they had been practicing every day on the field in some spots. It just looked worn away in places.

The practice fields are already FIeld Turf. If they can't get the natural stuff in order, maybe that's the way to go... as much as I hate artifical surfaces. We need to take full advantage of our athletes. I hate to think what the field will look like in November.

Fieldturf is a trade name. I don't know what type of artificial turf the Bucks practice on at the WHC. Rest assured they can interseed what is left as much as they want for the rest of the year. It may be the year that it is replaced, I think they start again every three years.

What makes this worse is that Ohio State is an agricultural school. You would hope that they would be able to keep a grass field maintained... :roll1:

They have a done a great job over the last few years, which is why I was shocked at how it looked last week. I suspect that something unusual has happened.

Kinda reminded me of how the turf looked at old Cleveland Stadium. Maybe they could do what the Browns used to do, spray the bare spots with green paint.

Seriously though, they should consider going back to artificial turf.

I posted an article about 3 weeks ago. It was about Tressel wanting the State Championship football games to be held at Ohio Stadium.

Some say they aren't held there because the field wouldn't be able to take the beating of 6 games in 2 days. Tressel wanted the games so much that he asked the head grounds crew guy if they could change Ohio Stadium to artificial turf. He told Tressel that the field would be fine.

As for the grass, the field's keepers say it would remain a safe playing surface for three high-school games even under brutal winter conditions.

"Even under the worst-case scenario with snow and rain, and the Michigan game being played at home, the field would hold up fine," said Brian Gimbel, grounds superintendent for Ohio State athletics. "It might look a little beat-up, but it would be stable for the players."

Ohio State revamped its playing surface in 2003 by installing an artificial-turf mat just below the rye-grass field. That grass now grows through the fields sand underbelly and snarls into the artificial mat for more stability.

Tressel's desire to bring the games back to the state capital is so high that he asked Gimbel about potentially changing Ohio Stadium's surface to artificial turf. Ohio Stadium had artificial turf from 1971 to 1989.

"I told the coach we didn't need to do that to get the highschool games and he said, OK," Gimbel said.

So I don't think we should change. I think the current turf is just fine. Most that say we should change to field turf have never been on it, let alone played on it. It is much different than grass. I personally hate it.

The indoor turf at WHAC is FieldTurf. They also have a outdoor field with FieldTurf. Along with two grass fields, and a AstroTurf field.
