Field conditions at Ohio Stadium

Yeah, I was kind of hoping for a pic we could use over and over again whenever we exclaim "PAINT THE ENDZONES!!!!"

So yeah...hopefully they're painting the endzones. Scarlet and gray checker pattern, right? Is that what we all agreed on?

OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK
Buckeyes to inspect ?Shoe?s new turf
Tressel upbeat about midseason change

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State players will check out the new Ohio Stadium turf today in hopes that it?s a big improvement over the surface they played on two weeks ago.
The footing for the game Sept. 23 against Penn State was a problem, according to players and coach Jim Tressel.
"When we tried to make cuts, basically it looked like we were running in place a couple of times," defensive tackle Quinn Pitcock said. "I?m glad we tore it up."
Receiver Ted Ginn Jr. called it "a little mushy."
Since then, Ohio State has installed new sod, which the Buckeyes will first play on Saturday against Bowling Green.
"We?re going to go over there (today) when we get to the hotel just to walk on it and hopefully just say, ?Wow, this is great,? " Tressel said.
Tressel said he talked to Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz last week about the process. Last year, the Hawkeyes replaced a field in midseason, "and (Ferentz) said you?d be surprised at how good it is."

Remade turf at Ohio Stadium holds up fine

COLUMBUS -- The last time Ohio State played at home, the turf looked more like a dirt infield than a football field. It's why the grounds crew spent the last two weeks replacing the entire field in preparation for yesterday's game against Bowling Green.

Despite a couple of slips early, the new turf held up well.

''The sideline was extraordinary,'' Jim Tressel joked.

While the possibility still remains of switching back to an artificial surface -- perhaps by next season -- for now, the footing is finally back in good condition.

''There were a lot of divots and uneven spaces,'' Troy Smith said, before turning to Tressel and adding, ''It will take some time to beat it up a little bit, fall on it a little more, run some more deep ball routes. We'll be OK.''

Tressel understood the ''deep ball route'' comment was directed at him. Earlier, he obliged with the 57-yard touchdown pass to Ted Ginn.

It was Ginn's second touchdown catch of over 50 yards this year. He had a 58-yard touchdown catch in the opener against Northern Illinois.

''If I was a (defensive back), I would just stay deeper than the deepest,'' Smith said. ''If you stay deep, at least you've got a chance to try and tackle him, because he'll run past you. He'll run past you with the blink of an eye.''

I definitely saw a few chunks fly as players pushed off or cut on the new turf. Hopefully another 2 weeks will give it some additional time to take root and recover from yesterday's game.

You could still see the seems in the field, so if you can see them, I'd guess the players could feel them.

If I understand correctly, there was no visible signs that there would be any trouble with the field prior to the season. But as a few games were played, it obviously didn't hold up the way it should have. They checked into it and found that there was some sort of particle 'contamination' (if that's the right word for it) between the sand base and the grass which was not allowing water to drain properly, making footing unstable, tearing the field up, etc.

So they reacted to a situation that didn't present itself until pretty much the same time the fans noticed it themselves.

in the beacon journal, senior david patterson went out in he second quarter with what he called a "level one MCL sprain". Tressel said patterson will be day-to-day in practice until the MSU game but, will be fine.

I twisted my knee in the new turf," patterson said. My leg got stuck and he knew it wasn't that bad because, he didn't hear a pop and the doctor said he was a sprain. He wanted to go back in:osu: damn new turf

Coastal can explain in more detail, but we put down 12 pallets of sod (approx. 3x3 squares) on our practice field this summer...it took at least a month before the bermuda was "seamless."

I am amazed they were able to play on the field at all...

up north it is not that unusual, watch nfl games some teams will rip up a field or two and go through another two or three between the hashes. interestingly enough we had by my count 3 injuries on it

I blame CoastalBuck.

I promise I didn't do it.

We saw the seams because they probably topdressed between the pieces of sod. The players probably couldn't feel it too much. If they wouldn't have, you wouldn't have seen them, but the players would have felt them. I thought it held up pretty well, you are going to see some grass fly around, these kids are just so big, strong, and fast, somethings gotta give.

did anyone else notice during the vid of them tearing it up that the paint had completely soaked through the top layer, and had stained the sand base? i thought that was kind of crazy...

count me in as one of those that think the injuries were due to the field not being completely set yet; though i'm rather amazed that they could play on it at all, considering the speed of the turnaround...
