Finally got to a concert where I could take pictures again, and I came away with some great keepers, I think. Here's the first of them.

Also, of note on the software side, Google released the Nik collection for free this afternoon, so if you don't have all of them (or any of them, but I bet most of you who post-process have at least one already), here's the link.

wow, those plug-ins are huge. Dfine and silver efex are great. I also love the sunlight filter in color efex as well as the quick skin softener.

Overall a killer set of plug-ins that was a steal at 150 for a pro. Lots of preset filters and changes too. Not much need for technical prowess.

Yep, I picked up the HDR Efex plug-in about 2 years ago, maybe 3, but could never swing for the whole package. Can't wait to see if Dfine can help me feel better about shooting at ISO 1600 and above (I hated shooting above 400 on my old a200, but I'm content shooting at 800, and can go to 1600 if I have to on my a65, but give up if I have to go 3200 or higher). Also excited to try Silver Efex, as there are some things in the parks I've been wanting to try in B&W, but actually doing it...different issue. I can never seem to quite get the results I want, and Silver Efex sounds pretty simple to understand and use.

Analog Efex - I really do not like these filters, but I never really liked film when I tried my hand at it (I appreciate the artform, it's just not for me), nor do I like instragram like filters.

Viveza - I need to come back to this, as it seems like it has potential. I didn't get much out of it with the first set of pics I tried and haven't really gone back yet.

Silver Efex - maybe the best part of the suite. I can click through a bunch of different filter settings (with different contrast, lighting, color) to find the right one. I can even run it again to extract a bit more detail. Warning: you will waste a ton of time because it's too fun with so many possibilities.

HDR Efex Pro - Terrific hdr plug in. The variety of filter settings and quick previews allows you to test out different looks. I really dislike fake looking HDRs and this helps you avoid those if desired.

Sharpener Pro - I find that this does an okay job. Sometimes it beats out my other options, sometimes it seems a bit overboard. It's nice to have, I just sometimes dial it back or sharpen it a duplicate layer and make that partially transparent to lessen the effect.

DFine comment on a thread discussing the best noise reduction software
One more comment. If you have ANY Nik software, you can now get the entire suite for free from google. You are supposed to get an email, but I never did. I contacted them and got a link to the suite. That includes Nik's Dfine 2. It has a brush feature so if you only want to noise reduce the background (which I often do) you can brush it where you want it and not have to use PS with a mask to control where it goes.
It seems like people prefer Topaz DeNoise, but if it's already included (especially for free), it's a pretty decent option.
