Researching the Magic!
Excellent! You have some prime birding locations down the central Florida. If you are actively going after bird shots, you should definitely check out:
-Merritt Island NWR out near Titusville. The Black Point Wildlife drive is ridiculous. Tons of wading birds during the winter (Great Blue, Little Blue, Tri-colored, and Green herons....Great, Reddish, Snowy, and Cattle egrets, roseate spoonbills, white + glossy ibises; wood storks -- not to mention the absurdly fun Florida Scrub Jay) -- it absolutely blew my mind. I cannot recommend highly enough getting out there in December/January. We are headed back there for a couple days in a couple months. We took probably 2000 pictures down there.
-Orlando Wetlands -- about an hour east of Orlando, too -- In May, the place is crawling with alligators + tons of birds. Unfortunately, it is closed from 11/15-1/31 every year for hunting season -- one of the stipulations of the folks that donated it.
-There is an Audubon Center for birds of prey up in Maitland -- not as much fun as getting them in the wild, but you can get some really good looks at eagles, owls, falcons, and hawks
-Disney Nature Conservancy - a rare chance to see a red-cockaded woodpecker -- not glamorous, but we got to check it off our list
-Ding Darling -- down on Sanibel, so a bit of a hike - one of the top birding sites in the US, (although a bit underwhelming when we were there in May). Winter time is supposed to be prime.
-Throw in Dry Tortugas and the Evergaldes down south -- I am truly envious!
EDIT - Flickr is a PITA these days. Jeez.
Yeah, I've seen more diversity in birds over the last 2 years here in Central Florida than I've seen in my life, and I love it. My main goal right now is to get some great Bald Eagle shots, but when I'm patiently waiting for one, I always take advantage of other birds around me (I've really developed a liking for Sandhill Cranes for some reason, just find them interesting). Living right down the road from Lake Toho puts me right next to a large concentration of active nests. I've already seen 5 flying around at work, and had a great shot at one close to its nest, but my focus was just barely off and they ended up not being useable. I need a 2x magnifier, though, to give me the reach for the Eagles that I really need.
Those locations outside of Orlando are all on my must-do list this season, and I'm hoping I can actually make it out this year.
Thanks for the compliments, guys, really appreciate it!
