Fan Behavior and KH's Apology (Merged all)

I agree with you 3yards that we have to do what we can to reduce the senseless bashing and behavior of visiting teams, but unfortunately I feel there is sometimes little we can do in the public scene. While I agree that 24 incidents is 24 too many, the fact is that 24 is very few when you put over 100,000 into perspective. I think with all the bad blood tOSU has had with the media lately, there are a select few Texas fans who have decided to be idiots and go as far to publicly complain to the university about it. I somewhat see this as tattling...you know anytime you go to a large university that you will be met by opposition, it's just the nature of the beast. While I personally would like to see the incidents go down, sometimes I can't even control the behavior of some of my own friends.

When it comes to BP, this is a whole different story. Here, you and other mods/admin regulate the behavior of the members. If anything is going way out of line, you can impose a corrective action. I am totally for this. However, with regards to Holbrook, being a current student at tOSU, I find many of her "corrective actions" to actually make things worse. I have a serious problem with many of the policies she has instated in my university. The fact that so much of the undergraduate student body is ignored for the purpose of improving the graduate/doctorate experience is a very bad thing. For her sake, you can relate the scenario to that of say President Bush. Many decisions are made by others and he takes the heat for the negative reactions. The same goes for President Holbrook. I do feel though that she could be taking actions to improve relations with undergraduates and she continuously fails to do so. When all she does is send us emails bashing our behavior and telling us to better represent our school, it definitely makes good relations very difficult. This is why I deeply regret her presence here.

To finalize this, I'm not saying I disagree with you 3yards because you do make some excellent points. I just say that some here have the right to dislike Holbrook more than others, and don't take the feelings that I or any other current student member of BP as being senselessly negative. I hope to think that the other students of tOSU are as informed as I am if not more so.

on fan behavior, i personally think this alcohol ban has made things worse. the kids seem more drunk, and more of them drunk. it seems to be that it has been driven underground and not monitored making the situation worse. anyone else have thoughts on this?

Instead of harassing the Alumni in the RV lot, maybe they should send the cops over east of High Street if they want to get rid of the problem.

I totally agree. It's like the idea of raising the drinking age. You do so and more kids binge drink because of various reasons...the same thought process I think can be compared in this scenario

Ding ding ding!!! We have a winner. That's exactly what I've thought for years. We had a few cops literally sneaking between RV's in our west campus lot trying to catch people with beer. I put as much blame on the people who decide how to allocate law enforcement to certain areas or create the policy that dictates it as I do anything else.

I guess you can generate more revenues writing an unlimited amount of minor misdemeanor open container tickets that you know most people will simply pay the ticket than you would arresting a few drunk and disorderly people who have to make a court appearance and would set it for trial to see if the cop would show up for court. If they want to solve the problem, then solve it... they're going after the wrong crowd and in the wrong manner.

Excellent post Golfer. I certainly can't attest to the validity of the 24 letters that were received by tOSU. Even if all 24 letters were pure fabrication, I think most would agree that somewhere else 24 other folks were treated unfairly. 24 incidents out of 200,000-300,000 people is a small percentage indeed, but that really isn't the point. The point (I believe you understand this, so for those of you who don't) is that we should stand up and take pride in ourselves, our actions and the actions of those around us. While individually, we can not even control our friends at time, as a group we CAN affect the overall attitude and direction of events. One voice in a sea of 100,000 will make no difference. 1,000 ... 10,000 ... 50,000 single voices CAN.

Anyway, I can't really disagree with anything you say about K Holbrook. I do VERY MUCH appreciate the way in which you said it. That is the difference.

"F Holbrook", "She is a _____", etc. These are the statements which add nothing of value and what I seek to avoid. Say what you need to say, but say it with class and dignity.

If you were on the Board of Directors at OSU what would make a bigger impression and possibly elicit some form of action?

"F Holbrook"

OR

"I do feel though that she could be taking actions to improve relations with undergraduates and she continuously fails to do so. When all she does is send us emails bashing our behavior and telling us to better represent our school, it definitely makes good relations very difficult. That my friend IS the difference between "senselessly negative" (bashing) and having constructive criticism. Obviously this lesson is not one you need to learn. I offer it up for anyone else who may be reading.

I now relinquish the soapbox. :wink2:

105,000 people + alcohol = a few idiots........the incidents that have been described shouldn't be tolerated and are wrong, but realistically, what can an institution do when you pack that many people into one area and throw in the passion for their teams......its inevitable that incidents will occur.

Not condoning the behavior, just my point of view.

Well ... that changes everything!

We all cross the line at times Golfer.I just wanted to remind folks that even K. Holbrook deserves for the criticism to remain civil. In a way there is a parallel to draw from that truth and the general topic of this thread. Even rival fans deserve to be treated with civility.

I can just be a Jekyll and Hyde sometimes. However, my point was that some people simply bash her for the point of bashing her. They really don't have very good reasons for doing so. Being a student of the university, I actually have good reasons for not caring for her. I usually remain civil but I sometimes lose my cool, as I'm assuming I did earlier

I'm with you JC.

Don't really know if you crossed the line or not Golfer. I wasn't paying too much attention to who, more on what was being said. Didn't like the path it was heading. Anyway, my post wasn't meant to single anyone out. If I ever have a problem with a specific poster, they'll know it. :wink2:
