Family Guy is like the Simpson's in that there is a lot of obscure pop culture and historical references that many people miss.

Actually, it's much more so than the Simpsons, but I agree with South Park's criticism that just tossing out a bunch of random pop-culture references does not equal great writing--it's like cartoon Dadaism. But like Seth McFarland, I grew up watching old TV shows and corny musicals, so I do like being one of the people who gets most of the references. They sure never get tired of the Sound of Music gags...

PS--apparently Futurama is benefitting from Adult Swim and the resurrected success of Family Guy, and there will be new episodes of it I think this fall. Now there's a great cartoon!

Agreed. Futurama was an overlooked gem. How could someone not think Dr. Zoidberg was one of the most hilarious creations of all time?

Another cartoon that never got a chance was The Critic. That show was classic and I'll never understand why Jay Sherman didn't catch on.

I watch Family Guy for dumb random humor (and Stewie is hilarious), but prefer South Park for the biting social commentary.

Since when does a bunch of random expletives, sex references, and poop jokes attached to a topic in the news constitute "biting social commentary"

A year ago I would have said South Park, but this seasons shows, the last two especially, I think have been lacking. South Park was funny because it was socially relevent but skewed through the eyes of 4th graders. Now, the kids are just vehicles for racial slangs and toilet humor. Too much of the show has been moved to the adults and to lampooning celebrities. I've really gotten bored with the Cartman/fat v. Kyle/jew schtick.

Family Guy got better with time, South Park has gotten worse.

I agree with that, but South Park has been on a lot longer than Family Guy as well. If/When Family Guy gets 8 or 9 seasons old they might have a hard time coming up with good new jokes as well.

The good doctor is indeed hilarious, but I'm partial to Hermes myself.

Because IT STINKS!

It's the timeliness of South Park that makes its commentary so "biting" (though I was using that cliche' half tongue-in-cheek), IMO. It only takes them a week to write and create an entire episode, so they can be lampooning a news event literally days after it happens.

Then again, "random expletives, sex references, and poop jokes" could just as well be a Family Guy critique--and really, lowbrow humor can be funny in its own right.

The best cartoon to ever be canceled is Clone High. Fuckin MTV. They keep terrible shows like Yo Mama (and all their other shows) and cancel the only good thing they had.

Well, MTV2 did pick up Wonder Showzen for season 2, which is better than both Family Guy and South Park.. but that doesn't make up for the Clone High mess.
