F Mickey Mitchell (transfer to Arizona State)

Mickey has not scored a ton of points in AAU play thus far this summer. There have been very positive reviews of his passing skills though. He seems to be getting 5 or 6 assists every game. Unique player. Don't see too many 6'7" facilitators. Could be a backup option for PG - definitely would make more sense if they were planning to play more zone, they could dust off the 1-3-1 they used to run for sure. Will be interesting to see how he fits in at OSU.

He's always reminded me of Evan Turner. Guy that is a penetrater, distributor and rebounder at 6'7. Won't be needed to score like ET and obviously he isn't going to be as good as ET but same type of player

Why not? It's a little early to determine how good he is going to be in college. ET was a turnover machine for a long time at Ohio State. Large portions of his freshman and sophomore seasons were painful to watch.

MM is really tough to get a read on as far as what he might be like as a college player. His HS and AAU teams are stacked with scorers and he seems to embrace the role of facilitator. Obviously he has good size and athletecism for his skill set, but he's never been much of a scorer. I think if we are an open court team that gets up and down the floor, he will flourish, but I'm not sure what his role will look like in half court play.

Sounds to me like he is a great athlete who is a great "team player" too (i.e. not the prima donna/hotdog/pad my stats attitude that you see in a lot of 5 star recruits).

What are you basing this on? It's not on his stats, pre-injury.

Well, he only played about 6-7 games this year as a junior and averaged about 13.5 per game. He didn't play as a soph due to unjury, averaged about 10 ppg as a frosh. In AAU play this year, he's averaged about 5 ppg game this AAU season. He's not starting or playing starter minutes and his team is loaded, but he is playing a fair amount, but just doesn't look to score very much. Maybe still working back from injury, but he did put up really good assist and rebound numbers in AAU, just didn't score much.

I believe 2 years ago he had a really good AAU season (not sure of his ppg average), but understand, when many top players play up in age, MM has actually been playing down in AAU play a few years ago. There is a strange rule in AAU play that allows you to play at the grade level you are at and not just your age. When MM was playing at the U15 level, he was 16. He has a late birthday and I believe was held back a year, or started school late. He will be 19 this Sept.

And just to be clear, I am just fine with him being an unselfish player and a facilitator more than a scorer (I should have worded it differently in the first post and instead of saying he wasn't "much of a scorer" but instead that he doesn't look to score much or have a scorers mentality). A comparison has been made to ET, but ET was a scorer moreso than a facilitator from the PF position and we didn't really have a PG presence on that team. I am just wondering what kind of role he might play on a team that has a good PG and whether he will maintain his role of being mostly a facilitator and how he will fit into a half court offense playing off the ball.
