F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

Mattas the head coach...SIT HIM DOWN AND SAY DON'T CHUCK 3's!! The kid is too valuable rebounding the ball and is a great scorer. He needs to be getting 20-25 minutes a game. Like I said at 30 minutes a game he would be our leading rebounder and would get 1 1/2 the offensive rebounds Sully does.

I don't think he all that bad on defense either. He held his own down low against Minny and FSU. Sibert needs more PT as well.

He also shoots it every time he touches the ball on offense, even if there's still 30 seconds to go on the shot clock.

DeShuan still has quite a bit to learn, but his talent glows red hot when he's performing. DeShaun is the X factor for this team off the bench. Love the fact that he got so much time last game against Penn State. Not one minute of his time was "garbage time", either. Thad's trust has really grown in DeShaun and we're REALLY gonna need him more and more as the season progresses.

brutus, I don't mind him shooting those 3s. At one point in the preseason, Thad said he was shooting 3's better than Diebs was. He can hit 'em.

I think if the coaches sit him down and talk to him he'll respond. Inside the key that kid is straight money. I bet his FG % within 15 feet is 70%...like I said he always gets a garbage basket or two off of offensive rebound putbacks...

He does shoot the rock alot but that can be fixed...We are gonna need him.

It looks to me like Thomas has been playing better defense lately. He still loses fucus and his man at times, but the vast majority of Frosh do. I agree that he rebounds well, and has a nose for the ball. I also agree that he needs to get into the rythm of the game before he starts jacking the threes. It's probably tough for Matta to tell him to settle, because he seems to give all his guys the green light when it comes to shooting. Maybe Lighty or one of the other upper-classmen need to let Thomas know to run the O a bit more before he starts chucking the rock from deep (not bad slang for a Nerdish 44yo :tongue2:)

I don't think the primary problem is that Thomas "chucks threes" -- I think it's that he's out there beyond the arc in the first place.

DeShaun has a great frame and instincts to be a terrific rebounder; I see him as being more effective at the PF position, whereas he seems to see himself as a wing. He has proven to be very productive at getting garbage buckets, and I'd like to see more of that from him.

Any thoughts on Jim Jackson's comparison of Deshaun to Cedric Ceballos (former NBA player)?

I remember when he made the comment that I thought it was a fair comparison. They're a similar size, and Ceballos used to get a lot of putbacks by roaming the baseline.

The other noteworthy thing from the last game was the time Thomas was placed at the top of the key against a zone defense. He got the ball and hit a jumper, but that's also a spot from which he can get to the basket with one dribble. I'd much rather have him in that spot against a zone than just roaming around the 3-point line.
