SAC boys: Everybody's watching Thomas
Bishop Luers senior Deshaun Thomas is ranked No. 18 in nation

By the numbers
2,254 career points (he needs 881 more points to break the all-time IHSAA scoring record held by Bedford North Lawrence's Damon Bailey).
27 games (that's how many games Bishop Luers has played in each of the previous two seasons).
32.6 How many points per game Thomas will have to average to break Bailey's record.
30.3 How many points per game Thomas averaged as a junior.
3 How many IHSAA Class 2A state championships the Knights will have won if they can ?three-peat? in March.
It's a surreal world that Deshaun Thomas wakes up to every morning. It's a world that few can ever imagine entering. And it's a world that some who have ventured into don't embrace.
That would not include Deshaun.
?It's a lot of pressure,? Thomas said of being a renowned basketball player. ?But I love it. It keeps me focused and motivated.?
The 2010 Indiana Mr. Basketball candidate in many ways is a typical teenager. He wants to play video games, hang with his buddies, go on a date on Friday nights, and lead Bishop Luers to a third consecutive IHSAA Class 2A state championship. However, when the typical teenager heads to McDonald's with friends, he's not bothered for autographs, forced into conversations with strangers or worse yet, stared at.
?If it wasn't for God giving me this talent, people wouldn't be doing that,? Thomas said. ?So I love the fans.?
Thomas burst onto the statewide hoops scene as a freshman - everyone in Fort Wayne knew of him way before that - and by early in his sophomore year he was being talked about nationally. When you average 29 points and 13 rebounds over your first two seasons, that will happen. Thomas bumped those numbers to 30.3 points and over 15 boards per night last season. He now needs 881 more points to become the greatest scorer in Indiana prep history.
The latest rankings have him as the 18th-best player in the country. It's hard to believe that there are 17 high school players anywhere in the world better than Thomas.
?I use that as motivation sometimes,? Thomas said. ?But the rankings are for younger players when you're just trying to get ranked. Now it's my senior year, and I just need to keep working hard and the results will come out later.?
?Later? will involve trying to lead the Knights to another title before heading off to Ohio State. Much ?later? will hopefully involve playing in the NBA.
?I think about the NBA all of the time,? Thomas said. ?When I'm working out I think about it. It motivates me to go hard.?
Thomas and his Knight teammates will get to live out another dream on two occasions this winter. Bishop Luers has been scheduled to play on ESPN twice (Jan. 23 vs. Columbus Northland at Ohio State and Feb. 6 at Lawrence North).
?Playing on ESPN,? Thomas pondered. ?It's just unreal.?
