F DeShaun "The Diesel" Thomas (Panathinaikos - Greece)

QUESTION: Do you think that Deshaun Thomas will break Damon Bailey?s Indiana High School basketball career scoring record of 3,134 points?

Deshaun Thomas, a 6-foot 7-inch, 221-pound, senior at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers needs to score 881 points this year to break the record. To break the record he will need to average 32.6 points per game this season (assuming he again plays 27 games this season).

He came out of the gate strong this year and in the first two games he scored 43 and then 39 points.

In the history of Indiana High School basketball, only the following 12 players have scored more than 881 points in a single season.

01 Dave Shepherd, 1969-70, 1,079 points

02 Steve Alford, 1982-83, 1,078 points

03 George McGinnis, 1968-69, 1,019 points

04 Damon Bailey, 1989-90, 972 points

05 Marion Pierce, 1960-61, 972 points

06 Delray Brooks, 1983-84, 970 points

07 Billy James, 1968-69, 938 points

08 Woody Austin, 1987-88, 932 points

09 Troy Lewis, 1983-84, 918 points

10 James Blackmon, 1982-83, 914 points

11 Mike Edwards, 1968-69, 910 points

12 Brody Boyd, 1999-00, 904 points

LYNN HOUSER: Wow, Sports Guy, you've done your homework. I think it's highly possible Thomas will break Bailey's record because he has averaged over 30 his entire career. And I don't see any 2A schools up north who can keep Luers from making it to the state finals. That's the key, going deep in the tournament. Bailey went to the Final Four three of his four years and to the Elite Eight the other time. A high average and a lot of games played are the recipe for scoring records. Just think what some of those other guys would have done had they had the 3-point shot. Having covered Damon's BNL teams those 4 years, it was a magical time for high school basketball in southern Indiana. Bailey will always have a soft spot in my heart, so I'm kinda leaning toward him keeping the record. Now if Thomas was headed to IU instead of Ohio State, it might be a different story. He is a great player, though. He is sort of a cross between Zach Randolph and LeBron James.

All-American Deshaun Thomas scored a season-low 28 points but had 19 rebounds, six assists and five blocks. The Ohio State recruit shot 12 of 17 from the field and moved into seventh on the state?s all-time scoring list.

?He showed he didn?t really have to score to be effective,? James Blackmon said. ?There were a couple of times we went down court and Deshaun didn?t touch the ball. We want guys to really play. We aren?t going to go up and down the court every time looking for Deshaun. Deshaun gets into it, and he made some great passes and rebounded well tonight.?

Thomas increased his career point total to 2,364 and inched up one spot on the state all-time list.

He needs 56 more points to move up to sixth place ahead of former Brebeuf and Indiana star Alan Henderson?s 2,419.

Thomas and Bishop Luers face tough teams from outside the area
By Reggie Hayes
of The News-Sentinel

Bishop Luers High School senior Deshaun Thomas? star power produces some scheduling quirks for the Knights, beginning Tuesday.

Luers will play Detroit Country Day at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Indianapolis Howe as part of the Michael Clarke Duncan ?You Can Do Anything? IPSAC/Midwest Basketball Challenge.

Duncan is best known for playing the role of John Coffey in the movie ?The Green Mile.?

Thomas, meanwhile, is best known for offensive domination in Luers? back-to-back state title runs, choosing Ohio State as his college destination and provoking national curiosity.

Luers will also play non-area games at Ohio State on Jan. 23 and at Lawrence North on Feb. 6. The second game is part of ESPN?s national high school broadcasts.

Former Hoosier prep standout returns to lead Detroit Country Day
By Kyle Neddenriep
Posted: December 23, 2009

Deshaun Thomas stayed on track to break the state's all-time scoring record, but a former Hoosier prep star stole the show Tuesday night at Howe High School.

Former Bloomington North standout Ray McCallum had 34 points, nine rebounds and seven assists as Detroit Country Day defeated Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 93-77 in the finale of the five-game Michael Clarke Duncan "You Can Do Anything" IPSAC/Midwest Basketball Challenge.

"I've been looking forward to this game for a while," said McCallum, a 6-1 senior who is considering scholarship offers from Arizona, Detroit, Florida and UCLA. "I used to play with Deshaun in AAU ball, so it was fun to play against him. He's a great player and it was fun to show my game off against the best."

Thomas matched McCallum's 34 points, bringing him within 736 of Damon Bailey's career mark of 3,134. But the 6-7 Ohio State recruit scored only 10 in the first half as Country Day (5-0) built a 15-point halftime lead.

Deshaun Thomas and the Bishop Luers boys basketball team have done a lot of special things in the SAC tournament in recent years. Their first game of the 2009 edition certainly wasn?t one of them.

The two-time defending SAC tournament champion and top-seeded Knights struggled but prevailed in a 71-62 win over No. 8 Concordia on Tuesday at Wayne.

The Knights (3-2) face Elmhurst in the semifinals at 12:30 p.m. today. The championship is at 8:15 p.m.

Thomas has made the tournament his individual showcase and has the single-game scoring record with 43 points, set last year. He helped Luers to the team title two years ago with a last-second tip-in in the championship game.

But facing the Cadets (3-5) for the second time in two weeks, Thomas scored a season-low 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting.

Concordia has held the 6-foot-7 Ohio State recruit, who was averaging 36 points, to his two lowest-scoring outputs after giving up 28 in a 76-51 loss to the Knights on Dec. 18. Thomas was 0 for 5 on three-pointers and remained at No. 7 on the state?s all-time scoring list with 2,416 career points.

Thomas tops in Luers win
He scored 36 points, had 19 rebounds in win over Harding

♦Deshaun Thomas, Bishop Luers: 2,491

Three years ago, Bishop Luers had never even advanced to the championship game of the boys Summit Athletic Conference Holiday Basketball Tournament.

Now the Knights have won three titles in a row.

Having Deshaun Thomas can do that for a program.

Thomas was extraordinary Wednesday as he scored a game-high 36 points and grabbed 19 rebounds to lead the Knights to a 69-59 win over Harding in the championship game at Wayne High School in front of a standing-room only crowd of more than 3,400.

The 2009 championship for the Knights added to the 2008 and 2007 trophies earned in wins over Snider and South Side, respectively.

?Deshaun?s going to be Deshaun,? Knight coach James Blackmon said. ?He rebounded well and got off to a great start and played with a lot of energy early on in the ball game.?

Thomas? effort against the Hawks followed up his 39-point effort in a semifinal win earlier Wednesday over Elmhurst. Those two performances, along with his 43 points scored in last year?s tournament against Bishop Dwenger, give him three of the top five scoring games in SAC Tournament history.

Thomas' Take
By Deshaun Thomas
Bishop Luers senior

After the holiday break, Bishop Luers senior Deshaun Thomas returns with his Q&A with Luers principal Mary Keefer.

Are you conscious while you are playing of how many points you're scoring?

"No, I just play. I don't think about the points."

I think you are the best passer on the team. What are you looking for when you pass the ball?

"I anticipate. I just know they will be where I pass the ball. It's fun to have an assist. I love to see kids who don't play a lot have a chance to score."

Talk a little bit about possibly breaking Damon Bailey's record.

"I would be happy if I could do that. I heard he was a great player. He did a lot to earn that record. But people say that I have to match his intensity to score that many points. I don't think I think about it as much as other people think about it. I read the articles in the paper so I see where I stand, but I'm not as hyped up as others are."

There was an article in the paper about kids being recruited too young. How do you feel about sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders getting contacts from college coaches?

"I think it's OK for kids to get recruited at a young age. If you are ranked high, you have earned it. It's exciting to get that first letter from a college coach. It encourages you to work harder. Some kids want scholarships, but if they are not offered, they don't think that they play that well. Getting looked at is encouraging."

Thomas remains on record pace
Posted by Kyle Neddenriep

It seems to be more "when" than "if" for Ohio Sate recruit Deshaun Thomas these days. The 6-7 Fort Wayne Bishop Luers swingman scored a career-high 52 points in his team's 110-94 win over Muncie Southside on Saturday, putting him in fifth place on the state's all-time scoring list with 2,543 points.

Eight games into his senior season, Thomas needs 53 points to pass former Lebanon great Rick Mount for fourth on the all-time list. Damon Bailey's mark of 3,134 points appears more attainable all the time. If he plays in 19 more games - which is the maximum if Luers advances to the Class 2A championship game for the third straight year - Thomas would have to average 31.1 points a game.

So far this season, Thomas is averaging 36.3. At his current pace, he would need 17 more games to break the record. Luers plays Friday at Fort Wayne Dwenger.

Yeah, and I think I read that his team will play 19 games if they make the state championship game & they've made the state title game and won it the past couple seasons. Hopefully he can stay healthy and get it done. At least I expect him to overtake Brody Boyd :)
