QUESTION: Do you think that Deshaun Thomas will break Damon Bailey?s Indiana High School basketball career scoring record of 3,134 points?
Deshaun Thomas, a 6-foot 7-inch, 221-pound, senior at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers needs to score 881 points this year to break the record. To break the record he will need to average 32.6 points per game this season (assuming he again plays 27 games this season).
He came out of the gate strong this year and in the first two games he scored 43 and then 39 points.
In the history of Indiana High School basketball, only the following 12 players have scored more than 881 points in a single season.
01 Dave Shepherd, 1969-70, 1,079 points
02 Steve Alford, 1982-83, 1,078 points
03 George McGinnis, 1968-69, 1,019 points
04 Damon Bailey, 1989-90, 972 points
05 Marion Pierce, 1960-61, 972 points
06 Delray Brooks, 1983-84, 970 points
07 Billy James, 1968-69, 938 points
08 Woody Austin, 1987-88, 932 points
09 Troy Lewis, 1983-84, 918 points
10 James Blackmon, 1982-83, 914 points
11 Mike Edwards, 1968-69, 910 points
12 Brody Boyd, 1999-00, 904 points

LYNN HOUSER: Wow, Sports Guy, you've done your homework. I think it's highly possible Thomas will break Bailey's record because he has averaged over 30 his entire career. And I don't see any 2A schools up north who can keep Luers from making it to the state finals. That's the key, going deep in the tournament. Bailey went to the Final Four three of his four years and to the Elite Eight the other time. A high average and a lot of games played are the recipe for scoring records. Just think what some of those other guys would have done had they had the 3-point shot. Having covered Damon's BNL teams those 4 years, it was a magical time for high school basketball in southern Indiana. Bailey will always have a soft spot in my heart, so I'm kinda leaning toward him keeping the record. Now if Thomas was headed to IU instead of Ohio State, it might be a different story. He is a great player, though. He is sort of a cross between Zach Randolph and LeBron James.
