Luers boys trounce Bluffton | The News-Sentinel - Fort Wayne IN

With all eyes on Deshaun Thomas, Knights' supporting cast stars in 2A showdown.

By Nick West
of The News-Sentinel

BERNE - This is similar to the way Bishop Luers worked toward a Class 2A state championship last season. With defenses double- and triple-teaming junior phenom Deshaun Thomas, a more than capable supporting cast stepped up and scored when the points were needed.

This time their contributions were in a first-round sectional game that will likely be one of the No. 2 Knights' toughest challenges on their quest for back-to-back state titles. The team was No. 3 Bluffton, who had lost three times going back to the start of last season. One of those losses was in last year's sectional finals to Bishop Luers. The Tigers got their fourth on Friday evening at South Adams as Bishop Luers won 65-50 in a gymnasium packed with 3,000-plus fans.

"Like a good teammate, Deshaun relied on those guys to step up, and when they doubled and tripled on him, they stepped up and made shots," Bishop Luers coach James Blackmon said. "Those are the shots we worked on in practice. It's not like they just had a great shooting night. These are things they've been doing all year long."

Thomas averages 31.8 points per game but got only 16 (4-of-15 shooting) on Friday. It was Evan Blackmon (20 points), Lawrence Barnett (16 points) and Kenny Mullen (10) who seemed to hit big shots. Barnett got going early, hitting three three-pointers in the first quarter. Blackmon scored 14 points in the second half, all of them in the paint by gashing the Tigers' sagging zone defense. Mullen scored eight of his in the second, six on layups.

DeShaun scored 23 points in a blowout win in the sectional finals game.

That puts Thomas up to 2,142 career points. That puts him at 17th on the Indiana all time scoring list.

The Bishop Luers(19-4) will play Tipton(23-2) on Saturday.

I posted this over at Bucknuts. What a great player he is.

I heard West or Northland, Not sure why it would be West. I'm guessing that's the home school of where his family here lives and would be living next year. But if he somehow could get to Northland with Sullinger that would make sense.

I thought if you went to a Columbus Public High School you could attend any school that you wanted. Well, sort of. I did not realize that he had family who lived in Columbus. Why would he currently be going to high school in Illinois:huh:

Bishop Luers? Deshaun Thomas is 15 points away from passing former Bellmont standout Seth Colclasure?s northeast Indiana boys scoring record.

Career points
Northeast Indiana boys leaders, with graduation year in parentheses:

1. Seth Colclasure, Bellmont, 2,207 (2002)
2. Deshaun Thomas, Luers, 2,193 (2010)
3. Charlie McKenzie, Claypool/Warsaw, 2,145 (1967)
4. Kevin Ault, Warsaw, 2,028 (1996)
5. Jeff Perlich, Churubusco, 2,019 (1988)

Seth Colclasure had no idea that Bishop Luers junior Deshaun Thomas was about to pass his all-time northeast Indiana scoring mark because Colclasure didn?t know he had the record.

The former Bellmont standout scored 2,207 points from 1998-2002. Colclasure ranks 12th on the state?s all-time list and first among male players in the area.

Thomas, whose Knights (21-4) play North Judson (20-5) today at Warsaw in the Class 2A semistate, needs 15 points to move past Colclasure?s record.

Thomas is 68 points away from being No. 10 on the state?s all-time scoring list. Anthony Winchester of Austin scored 2,256 points.

He'll be back: Fort Wayne Bishop Luers' Deshaun Thomas is averaging 30.1 points per game this season. - Joe Vitti / The Star

There are still four high school boys basketball games to play Saturday to crown this season's state champions, but it's not too early to think about what could be a record-breaking season next year.

Deshaun Thomas will head into his senior season at Fort Wayne Bishop Luers with a chance to pass former Bedford North Lawrence legend Damon Bailey for No. 1 on the state's all-time scoring chart.

"If he continues to be Deshaun, I think he'll get the record," Bishop Luers coach James Blackmon said.

Thomas, a 6-7 forward and Ohio State recruit, enters Saturday's Class 2A championship against Brownstown Central with 2,220 career points. Bailey's record, set in 1990, is 3,134. The only other player with more than 3,000 is Marion Pierce of Lewisville, who graduated in 1961 with 3,019 points.

A little number crunching shows Thomas can join that elite duo with another season similar to his first three. If Thomas scores 20 on Saturday (he's averaging 30.1 points) he'll go into next year needing 895 points to pass Bailey.

Chasing Bailey
Deshaun Thomas of Fort Wayne Bishop Luers has 2,220 career points heading into Saturday's Class 2A championship game against Brownstown Central. That puts the 6-7 junior forward 12th on the all-time state scoring chart, with one more season to chase Damon Bailey's state record. The players ahead of Thomas, with the year they graduated and their point totals:

1. Damon Bailey, Bedford North Lawrence (1990), 3,134.

2. Marion Pierce, Lewisville (1961), 3,019.

3. Brody Boyd, Union (Dugger) (2000), 2,632.

4. Rick Mount, Lebanon (1966), 2,595.

5. Billy Shepherd, Carmel (1968), 2,465.

6. Alan Henderson, Brebeuf Jesuit (1991), 2,419.

7. Mike Edwards, Greenfield (1969), 2,343.

8. Delray Brooks, Michigan City Rogers (1984), 2,324

9. Brady Adkins, Morristown (1992), 2,319.

10. Anthony Winchester, Austin (2002), 2,256.

11. Dave Shepherd, Carmel (1970), 2,226.

Another State Title for DeShaun. His team ran away with another championship (back-to-back). 67-49 Ft. Wayne Bishop Leurs.

As far as his game-

Another day at the office I suppose. 34 points (averaged 30 pts and 15 rebs). Didn't shoot entirely well. He does a lot of damage inside 10 ft, on the block, on the break, and putbacks. He was hitting turnarounds from 6-10ft with 2 and 3 guys guarding him. His jumper isn't bad. Has a good release with his left-hand. Gets good elevation, good rotation. He hit a few threes, though he missed a decent amount as well (8/10 on 2pt FGS, 3/10 on 3's). His free throws looked real good (9/10). He's gotta improve his defense and intensity for the college level. Maybe improve a little on his upper-body strength, but he's got a good base. Not much to say. He's just really good.

One minor knock (and I might have mentioned it the other times I've seen him)...He gets a little uninterested it seems. Could be because of the competition, always being box-and-one'd, doubled/tripled teamed, etc. I don't know, it's kind of hard to explain. It's not awful, I mean he puts up 30 and 10+ every game and his team wins by 20+ points. I'd like to see him more challenged. He's so talented. He's explosive, can handle the ball, rebound, and score from anywhere. He has all the tools. I guess it's just how HS ball is when there is a big talent gap. He's forced to sometimes just stay out of the play so his teammates can take advantage. For those that saw him play, what was LeBron like in HS? Anyone notice a kind of similar thing (maybe not going all out on D)?

DeShaun isn't LeBron level, but he's definitely something special.

881 points to go for the Indiana state record (if he stays). Would be cool to have Indiana's all-time leading scorer AND Ohio's. You think we'd hear about that in 2010? :p
