Holy crap!

The Turks are certainly leading charmed lives at this point.

That was unreal. A great example of why you should kill clock in the last couple of minutes, instead of trying to get a second goal and going offside near midfield, which allowed a free kick into the top of the box.

I thought the Croatian coach had a point about the clock, though. That is, if they added 1 minute of stoppage time in the second OT period, that last goal for Turkey went in at +1:02.

People are going nuts here in Istanbul. It's about 12:30 after midnight.

It's *almost* like being in Columbus on gameday.

EDIT: And there go the fireworks. People are running into the street and car horns are blasting everywhere.

Germany should be happy. Screw the revenge theme of going against Croatia - they get to face a Turkey squad missing 3 guys due to accumulated yellow cards.

That game was pretty boring until the last 5 mins of regulation and then the shoot out.

I never thought I'd see a last second soccer goal

I actually had no clue what was happening with the tourney (though I knew it was happening). I knew the Turks had played in it, but didn't know they were still alive.

So I'm sitting here (reading BP on holiday) and the neighborhood is going nuts, especially with that last minute goal, so I thought I'd check to see if it had something to do with the tourney, and voila!

I have never seen a ref stop a game during an attack. Had the ball gone out of bounds or been sent back towards midfield, the game would have been ended. That was indeed the last chance they were going to have.

I cannot imagine the emotional roller coaster for both teams in those last few minutes.

This was the game that I thought would be the first to go into extra time; and I was right. I didn't think Croatia would miss three pk's though.

The Turks have really been in great positions when it has been crucial for them to do so lately, and they have really made the most of their chances. I have a feeling that things may be different against the Germans, but we'll see, they have had lady luck on their side so far.

As for today's match-up in Netherlands v. Russia, I'm hoping to see some good football. With the way the Dutch has been playing so far, I see them being able to run away with this game. The Russians should not be counted out because they are solid and play fluid counter-attacking football, however it seems like the knock-out rounds are as far as the Russians get in tournaments, which is a feat in itself, but that is also where they are now.

I somewhat hope to be proven wrong as I love to see a good story, and good football, but I do believe the Dutch are the better team in this match-up. I think if they can advance, the later stages of the tourney will be thrilling.

I love how the Euro crowds all chant the melody to "Seven Nation Army". I believe the Italians started it during World Cup 2006, then State Penn promptly stole it and added it to their "traditions" like other soccer-themed chants

I agree. But the Euro fans don't leave at halftime.

The Russians are more than holding their own versus the Dutch, so far. Both of these teams can score, so I expect a breakthrough soon.
