Ex-Wazzu QB, No. 2 pick Leaf hired by ESPN

Ryan Leaf has been hired by ESPN to be a college football analyst, another step in the remarkable comeback of the former Washington State star who has battled drug addiction and served time in prison.

Leaf will be paired with play-by-play announcer Clay Matvick and will call games mostly on ESPN2 and ESPNU. The No. 2 overall NFL draft pick of the San Diego Chargers in 1998 worked for the Pac-12 Network last season and has been co-hosting a show on SiriusXM's Pac-12 channel.

Re: The former Washington State quarterback led the Cougars to a Pac-10 championship and a Rose Bowl appearance in 1997, a year in which he finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting, behind only Pro Football Hall of Famers Charles Woodson and Peyton Manning. He was selected second overall in the 1998 NFL draft and then flamed out–spectacularly.

Leaf played in only 25 games as a professional, the first tumble in a decade-long fall that eventually found him addicted to Vicodin and incarcerated with multiple burglary and drug convictions. He was in and out of Texas and Montana jails for the first part of this decade, but was released in December of 2014 and has since spent time rebuilding his life–including a new career as a broadcaster.

“Five years ago sitting in a prison cell I would have never imagined that I was going to be part of ESPN and the Disney Corporation,” Leaf told the Associated Press. “If you would have told me that I would have said you are absolutely crazy. And I can’t believe it. I lay my head down every night with a ton of gratitude.

Just sayin': He's the poster child for an "athletic with a very high ceiling repeatedly screwing his life up".......

Almost incomprehensible that Ryan Leaf would do such a thing.

They're showing Tressel beating Duh U and how do they open it? The call that changed it all.

If they were referring to Gamble's 3rd down catch being ruled incomplete they'd be correct. Bucks should've taken 3 knees and won 17-14.

But we know what we're going to get from these assholes. :roll1:

Interesting hearing Romberg and Vilma talking now, and how much respect they have for the Buckeyes - very complimentary all these years later.

They admitted what we knew - they thought it was going to be a cakewalk. Their early TD fed that belief and they weren't prepared to get punched in the mouth.
