Encouraging Signs

With us entering into to what is our most important game of the season, there are several signs that are encouraging in the teams play:

1) UP FRONT PLAY - The past two games the DL has truly stepped it up and has done a great job in both rush defense and pressuring the QB. The return of a healthy Tod Denlinger has truly helped. On Offense, we saw what was the best OL production of the year. It looks like the line up of Boone, Cordle, Brewster, Rehring and Browning is the best chance to succeed up front.

2) BEANIE has averaged about 25 carries a game over the last two games. We will need for him to be healthy enought to carry the ball about that many times when we face PSU. Having Herron back to spell BEANIE will also be significant as he is our best back behind the Beanster.

3) TURNOVERS - We are winning the turnover battle. TP has done an excellent job of not giving the opposing Defense a short field to work with. As long as we continue to win the field position battle, we should be in a good place to win each and every game.

4) BIG PLAYS - We are not giving up any big plays on Defense AND in turn, coming up with big plays on Defense. Though the Offense is evolving, both BEANIE and TP have had 20+ gains on the ground and we have seen a few big pass plays as well. This team has big play potential in all facets of the game.

5) BRANDON SMITH - The use of Brandon Smith has been encouraging. He has been both the primary and outlet receiver. He catches the ball and has gotten a number of key first downs throughout the year. Loved the TE screen pass that almost went for a TD against MSU.

6) RED ZONE OFFENSE - It was only one game but the Offense finally clicked in the Red Zone. The fact that we had limited penalties inside the 20 was a key reason to the teams success. The fact that we also kept BEANIE in the game inside the RED ZONE was the other reason.

7) PASSION - Perhaps for the first time this year, the team on both sides of the ball played a passion filled game. It was great to see the players celebrating and truly excited about what was going on in the game.

Hopefully, yesterday's game will both unite and propel the BUCKS forward as they face a tough Penn State team next Saturday night.

These three are the key in my opinion. This team has turned the corner, they seem to have gotten their swagger back. Wow, the game this weekend is going to be a dandy. :wink2:

That's been my favorite part of the past couple games, especially on defense.

It does appear that some "lights have come on" for some of the Bucks, the O-line and D-line are playing their best ball of the season, the recievers are looking more like the group we expected when the season started, the returning seniors are playing their [censored]s off, the young guys get better with every play, and maybe most importantly, Beanie appears healthy and ready to shoulder a large share of the load. The Shoe will be rocking Saturday night and the Bucks appear ready to roll.

TP is going to want to show for the old state school Nits.

Looking forward to Saturday night getting here, I should be "primed" and ready myself :biggrin:

Ray of Hope

It was just one game, but....

It was certainly good to see the Bucks hitting on all cylinders. The defense scored, the offensive line played well, the special teams won the field position battle, and there was certainly a different "feel" or attitude to the Buckeyes.

Now Penn State is really a very good team and rated in the tip 5. Talent abounds for both. This is truly a good test of the Buckeyes. Let us tame the Nittany Lions and let them see red at the end of the day. (Scarlet actually)

It is an 8:00 p.m. game. Buckeye fans: Let us behave with pride and class!

Let's hope we saved some of that for Saturday night...I kept telling my dad that I hoped we weren't using all of our offense up for next week :biggrin: But I noticed everything you said and am very excited about it. Terrelle is going to face a tough defense that can force turnovers with the pressure they put on the QB, so hopefully he is up for the challenge. I think he will be because he is always a competitor first off, but second, he is facing his homestate that despises him for leaving. I expect a big performance out of Terrelle. Also, this defense has had PSU's number. Malcolm Jenkins is worth at least 2 big plays against PSU every year and he is going to take it to the Nittany Lions. I can't wait for Saturday!

Tressel always builds his teams for the end of the season, so what we are seeing is just that. A lot depends on Beanie's health. He gets hurt again and all bets are off. Beanie does have less "mileage" on his body this year, having missed 3 games so that probably helps. And TP gets better and better with every snap .:biggrin:

To me, the PSU game is all about OSU's DL. PSU's OL has been simply crushing people and it will get ugly if that happens to the Bucks, which I assumed would be the case two weeks ago but now am cautiously optimistic might not be the case. I think PSU's defense, despite its gaudy numbers, can be run on with success and possibly passed on as well, but if the Bucks can't win first down on defense and hit Clark, it's gonna be a long night.

Listen I hate to be the guy that can't enjoy a great win but....

MSU couldn't stop us from getting to the outside. They were loading the box regardless of what we did. Pryor could generally beat the Spartans to the outside on every play. Once we struck a couple times everything up the middle opened up.

That's exactly what we want but PSU has the athletes to stop that and they are going to actually show us some different looks and maybe even respond to what we are doing! We destroyed MSU because they can't play power football against superior athletes and they weren't going to beat us with their discipline.

The fact is that Pryor threw the ball 11 times. All game. Where is the progress? We are doing exactly the same thing, we were just doing it against the right opponent.

I think that we have a great shot at beating PSU next week but I don't think we have any better shot than I thought we did before the MSU game. Im still waiting to see any semblance of a passing game, or a fully competent offense for that matter.

FYI Pat Ford is praising us on ESPN. That's as serious an indicator that we are looking at our team with scarlet tinted glasses as we are going to get. It's funny because it's true.

Ohio State looks like they have turned the corner as far as the offense is concerned. The defense is really turning up the heat each time they play.
I agree that this time the Buckeyes are starting to play with some real
intensity and passion. And is this the 1st night game that Penn State has
played at Ohio State. It seems the crowd noise from the "Shoe" on a night
game is really louder than a day game. There is a little more hostile enviornment on a night game, especially getting ready for Penn State. The Lions will have to play almost a perfect game in order to be sucessful but I think and hope that our Scarlet and Gray can be ready for this big game.
