  • Having a discussion with a friend and he said that he eats largemouth and smallmouth bass.

I was shocked by this as I thought it was basically a sport fish meant for catching and not consumption.

    Have you eaten bass?

Fishing merit badge required lil ubet gutting and cooking the fish he caught (well, the one he caught - one was released) - so I had one bite of a small fillet pan seared in butter and a little Tony Chachere's.

Used to fish all the time when I was young with my dad. I remember catching bass and I am pretty sure we ate them. We ate just about everything we caught. Dad was a good cook when it came to fish and wild game.

Small mouth bass is as good an, "eating fish" as Walleye or Yellow Perch. The flesh is very firm, and tastes similar to Yellow perch. The Large mouth bass I would not recommend, soft spongy flesh with a bit of a muddy flavor.

Just went out today with my father, caught and released seven largemouth.

I used to eat them fairly regularly, they make a fine meal-but the body of water does play a big part in their taste. I prefer a largemouth from the Connecticut river over Seneca Lake, that's for sure. The flesh is firmer the colder the water is, too.

Smallies are also really good-but I wouldn't put them over walleyes/yellow perch. I have issues with killing bass, but I don't mind keeping 30 perch and firing up the vacuum sealer. The only time I eat a bass these days is when one of my dipshit buddies hooks them so deep it isn't worth releasing them.

When I was a real small kid all we fished for was blue Gills, Sunfish, and Bass. and we ate everytthing. Small bass are great to eat. Pan fry them rolled in bread crumbs are just great.
If you haven't eaten bass then you should.

    ^^^and this.

I haven't eaten bass in many years, but certainly would if the water and setting were right.
