ok first of all, if I was a scUM fan I wouldn't have said that I would keep cheering on my buckeyes, I'm obviously displaying my anger. hello this is eastern Michigan, we should be destroying them. instead we're actually giving them a little hope. it's 38-14, it should be 49-3 right now, but no our D is looking like the D from 2004. I'm still a buckeye fan, but this is not the way I wished it could go. so unless you can convince me that we're an actual NT contender right now, leave me alone.

Thoughts on Eastern Michigan: Issues with the run game and pass defense?

Here is an article I wrote for theBuckeyeBattleCry.com concerning the two major "concerns" (run game and pass defense) that seem to be popping up after the EMU game.

The highlights (I think):

The stable of backs is affecting people?s perception of the effectiveness of the ground game. Ohio State clearly doesn?t have a ?go to? back, but has the ground game suffered as a result?


I won?t beat around the bush, it hasn?t.

To prove it, here is a side by side rushing comparison between this year and the year Ohio State had the ultimate ?go to? back; Beanie Wells in 2007.

In ?07, Ohio State split carries between Beanie, Maurice Wells, and Brandon Saine.Through four games, their stats were:

137 rushing attempts
699 rushing yards
5.1 yards per carry
7 rushing touchdowns

In 2010, Ohio State has been splitting carries between Brandon Saine, Boom Herron, Jordan Hall, Jaamal Berry, and Carlos Hyde. Through four games, their stats have been:

109 rushing attempts
657 rushing yards
6.0 yards per carry
7 rushing touchdowns

And that isn?t even including Pryor?s 43 attempts, 269 yards, 6.3 yards per carry, and 3 touchdowns.

The vanilla defense combined with the unexpected down field attack from the eagles resulted in three touchdown drives (out of four) for Eastern Michigan at the end of the second quarter and the start of the third quarter.



This may seem like a cause for concern, but?


Ohio State did make adjustments. After Eastern Michigan?s third scoring drive the Buckeyes did not allow another first down the rest of the game (six straight three and outs).

Great article. I often think that about articles that I read in which I agree with everything written :), Color me conceited.

But those rushing stats are really eye popping. And those stats are not including TP scrambles! That's really something. Great job pointing that out.

Good job on the article...I too agree with your analysis. When you have two redshirt Freshman playing the majority of the game at CB you are going to see some miscues. OJ is also a new body that is learning his position. Besides that, the E. Michigan QB threw some amazing passes that I'm not sure anyone, on any team, could have stopped.

As far as the running game, we are in good shape. BOOM and ZOOM are good, solid, backs. Hall brings an added dimension and Berry has "special" written all over him.

Teams are quickly realizing that this is a new, improved, mature TP, and that cheating up on the line is a quick recipe for failure.

This is a special Offense that is only going to get better...and once our secondary gets healthy, we will be in great shape in the secondary.

My problem with this is that people just push it aside like it's no big deal and then it comes back to bite us in the ass. Don't think for one second that the coaches have the same attitude that some of the people here do.

I don't care what the reason is if I'm a coach.

Lose that urgency against even a mediocre team in the B10 and we'll find ourselves staring defeat in the face.

The issues in the secondary and even somewhat at linebacker were cause for concern. Hopefully the lesson is learned this week and I'm sure it will be because we have great coaching. I don't think last week had anything to do with coaching, it was on the players.

Also I think one of the problems you can't just attribute to lack of urgency is the play at Safety. There is a serious concern there in my opinion. Barnett is a big a loss.

Eh...we'll see. However, the safety can only do so much sitting single high...and he sure didn't get much help on the first 2 levels.

I'm not concerned, but I will be watching also.

How people can be "concerned" with the loss of C.J. Barnett is a mystery to me. He was a concern for some people after the Marshall game, but a few snaps in the Miami game before getting hurt and suddenly he's better than anybody else...I don't get it.

I'm in the same boat. He looked good when he was out there, but not so much that he made me think the secondary was solidified. I get that OJ was out of position on a few plays and got burned by perfect passes and nice catches. The secondary is a work in progress. We basically had Hines be the only "starter" out there. Things will get dicey with 3 noobs.
