How to Get Eastern Michigan Off The Fast Track To FCS Status.

Eastern Michigan was again dead last in attendance at the FBS level, drawing 5,016 fans per game in 2009.

That means it filled Rynearson Stadium to 16.61 percent of capacity in its five home games.

It gets worse.

They opened with Army?a great road draw?and drew 14,499.
Yes, they averaged 2,645 in their last four home games?and those last four home games were in-conference games against their longtime rivals.

Let's not beat around the bush here.

Last year's schedule was especially brutal, and EMU has struggled to draw crowds without a brutal schedule. From 2004-2007, EMU averaged 9782 fans per game.

Something has to be done about this. No school should be playing FBS football and drawing effectively less than 3,000 of its own fans per game to in-conference games, as EMU did last year. That is a money pit.

As I wrote in a previous article, EMU's Rynearson Stadium is a big part of the problem , but it isn't all of the problem....

...Schools like MSU, Cincy, Marshall, and Louisville might be quite agreeable to getting a foot in the door for Detroit area and Michigan recruiting. Ohio State might be very interested as well for the same reason, but the idea is not to get beaten 60-0...

:slappy:

I'm off to the vBookie... if EMUs are calling for 60-0, I'll take the Bucks even with the line...

Thanks 'Bus for the read.

I read the guys article about Rynearson. I agree and disagree with some of his points. When I attended '93-'97, I recall hearing people talk about Eastern being forced down a level, because of the lack of attendance. It is what it is, and I don't see how that could change without some sort of stellar rejuvenation and performance. I completely disagree that changing Rynearson would have any impact. Yes, the track separates the fans more from the field; however, I don't believe for one instance that bringing the field closer (in a perfect world) would do dick. As the author states, the school IS a commuter school primarily. 26,000 students annually enroll, but only 6K live on campus. The stadium is a LONG walk from campus as well with thoroughfares that don't offer the best walking conditions. Plus, when you're competing with that shithole in AA, there just aren't that many people who are going to also go to Rynearson for games.

I've known since I left that there are only a few athletics that are going to receive financial funding from the university. These would be swimming/diving, track, and possibly basketball. Everything else is left out in the cold. I don't know if the administration cares. The focus is so much on increasing the academics and research that I believe they'd almost just assume go all academic and forget the sports.

One other thing that I know killed a lot of support for the school was when the former douchebag president changed the mascot from the Hurons to the Eagles. Hell, even the local Huron chief wanted the name to stay AND offered to teach a course if they kept it. That was dismissed and the asshole went PC without reason. A LOT of Eastern alumni dropped contact with the school after that.

Just a quick note here, I heard that the EMU Mascot is planning an attack on Brutus again this week. It seems that there is a conspiracy to take Brutus down. It may be a good idea to have Brutus equiped with a Kevlar mascot head and get a crash martial arts training lesson from Chuck Norris just in case the eagle attacks.

This is what the mascots should plan:

-The Eagle should charge Brutus like he is going to tackle him
-When he gets within a few feet, he should stop
-Then, the Eagle and Brutus greet each other and hug, ala the Scots and Irish in Braveheart
-(Insert some insult at Rufus)
???????
-Profit!!
