E. Gordon Gee sings the Ohio State alma mater with admissions counselors at the freshman convocation at St. John Arena. Gee, the school's incoming president, was a hit with the incoming class yesterday. He also spent most of Saturday getting to know students.

If all goes well, 2,000 classroom hours from now, they'll graduate. But that goal was a long way off as several thousand freshmen got a pep talk yesterday from Ohio State University leaders, including incoming President E. Gordon Gee.

For Ohio State University President Dr. E. Gordon Gee, it was an emotional first day at work on Monday morning.
Gee, who announced his return to Ohio State this summer, was greeted by a throng of faculty, staff and even cheerleaders, 10TV News reported.
The crowd applauded Gee as he entered his office, located inside Bricker Hall.
Gee spoke to the group of supporters, his voice breaking with emotion.
"I wanted to come to a place that I love," Gee said. "And to a place that's loved me. And I wanted to be here with all of you."
First on Gee's list of things to do include a meeting with faculty that focuses on cohesiveness, 10TV News reported.

OSU President E. Gordon Gee

OSU President E. Gordon Gee doesn't dare go to away football games -- not even The Game.

"I'm a very nervous football watcher. I pace. I turn the TV on and off. I peek through my fingers to see what is going on," Gee said. "It's very intense."
So he'll be in Columbus today, not Ann Arbor.

OSU's Gee visits Newark campus
Students want more connection to Columbus campus, degrees
By SETH ROY
Advocate Reporter

NEWARK -- About 10 minutes into a student forum with Ohio State University President Gordon Gee, power went out at the Newark campus, leaving the room lit only by candles and security lights. "This is kind of romantic, isn't it?" Gee joked shortly after the outage, which happened after a car hit a pole on Country Club Drive at 9:40 a.m.

He was further interviewed today on 1460 by Hooley, and responded that he would not be the "OSU Tailgating Gestapo."

I would say he definetly was not the Gestapo at all. After seeing many police in the ag section of campus during the 2003-2006 seasons, I did not see ANY this year for the 4 games I attended. I would say this saved the university money since like he mentioned there were no problems and it was a family atmosphere. I did see police the one game I was behind St. Johns but I can understand that beeing close to Lane Ave. It's great to have him back!!

That's good to hear. I wondered how, once Holbrook had invited them in, Gee was going to get rid of the liquor police. It's like trying to get rid of the mob after you've invited them into your business. He, however, has seemed to have done it.

The great thing about Gee is that he will address problems--the real problems. He also won't be afraid to take on the private business interests that have fueled the problem. Holbrook just chose the simplistic route of turning the whole thing into an anti-alcohol witch hunt.

Gee taking on James faculty: "you're not bigger than the university."

Dayton, Ohio Weather, News, Sports and Entertainment WDTN.com, 2 On Your Side News and Weather: OSU president: Top-notch cancer center still part of university

BTW, not sure why this thread is in the football section, as very little that Gee does relates directly to the football program.

Excerpt:
Supporters of the James have been critical of a proposed expansion of the university medical center out of concern it will hurt the James' status as a nationally ranked cancer center.
How would expansion hurt its status?

I think the James Cancer Center sees themselves now as the crown jewel of the University Medical Center.

If Gee has his way James will be one of several crown jewels in a substantially expanded University Medical Center.

Their status will not in reality diminish - they will simply be jostling for the spotlight with other centers of excellence at Medical. Then again, they do that each and every day with heavy hitters like Sloan-Kettering - it would simply be that the competition becomes closer to home.

Hope Gee gets his way on this.

There's a history of tension between the medical school faculty and Bricker Hall. I believe that Harold Enarson expanded considerable time and energy trying to reform the system in the seventies. No one in their right mind thinks that Gee wants to do anything to damage the James' Comprehensive Cancer Center status.

My guess is that there's something of a prima donna factor with the James faculty. They don't relish being just "a" center of excellence in the med center. Some of it might be trying to secure a bigger slice of the med center's half billion dollar fundraising campaign for themselves. Their leverage is that they bring in a substantial chunk of external research funding every year.

Wonder what tibor makes of this. Anyone seen him around lately?
